The first great team at Georgia Tech was the 8-1-1 1904 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets coached by John Heisman. The Georgia Tech football program had been pretty nondescript with two winning seasons since 1892(2-1-1 in 1893 under Frank O. Spain and Lt Leonard Wood and 4-0-1 in 1901 under Dr Cyrus W. Strickler) and not very competitive overall. With hard work by John Heisman GT became a power in the old Southern only behind Vanderbilt and Auburn.

Lob Brown was All Southern Conference(GT's first All Conference Player) and the Captain was Barien Moore

The first season passing was legal. John Heisman campaigned to legalize passing because the middle of the line was so bunched up. A football back then looked like a rugby ball and you could pretty much only pass it underhand

From memory, Sewanee was an original SEC member and pretty good, until they realized they couldn't keep up with the arms race.

Great stuff. When I did my stats for GT football, I started them in 1904. That's because before that time, football at GT didn't have a paid coach, just a prof doing a collateral duty.

Every year I look at the history of GT football and how we did historically. Trying to get a perspective. Data is largely from http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cfindex.htm In 1904 and 1905, the SOS was about 10% (weak). But in 1906 and 1907 it got up to ~55%. So then, like now, you have to consider the SOS:D Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find the Scout star statistics that far bac, .....:censored:

Here's the "early years through Heisman (04-19):
