The first great team at Georgia Tech was the 8-1-1 1904 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets coached by John Heisman. The Georgia Tech football program had been pretty nondescript with two winning seasons since 1892(2-1-1 in 1893 under Frank O. Spain and Lt Leonard Wood and 4-0-1 in 1901 under Dr Cyrus W. Strickler) and not very competitive overall. With hard work by John Heisman GT became a power in the old Southern only behind Vanderbilt and Auburn.
