Taquon Marshall - 5-10/ 175
2015- Freshman
2016- Soph
2017- Junior
2018- Senior
High School Notes: Passed for 1,376 yards and 18 touchdowns and rushed for 1,436 yards and 12 touchdowns. Was named All-Bi-City offensive player of the year as a senior. While he played quarterback for Harris County as a junior and senior, he is went to Georgia Tech as an all-purpose athlete. (A-back)
Film Breakdown: TaQuon Marshall won the Georgia Tech quarterback job in spring practice and nailed it down with a strong preseason camp. But he remains an unfinished product, as was shown in the season-ending loss to Georgia. Marshall remains one of the best running quarterbacks in the country, but his ability to throw the ball continues to be called into question. 43-for-116 (37.1%), 927-yards, 10 TDs, 5 INT. Quon finished the season with 1,146 rushing yards and set a school single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback. He eclipsed the old record of 1,086 set by Justin Thomas in 2014. Marshall must find a way to improve his arm strength and his accuracy if he is to keep the starting job or he may find himself playing A-Back his senior year.

Lucas Johnson - 6-3 / 210
2016-Redshirt
2017- RS Fr
2018- RS Soph
High School Notes: Totaled 3,737 yards (2,571 passing, 1,166 rushing) and 40 touchdowns (26 passing, 14 rushing) as a senior, en route to the state championship game, the school’s first title-game appearance in 30 years. Amassed 2,104 total yards (1,456 passing, 648 rushing) and 25 touchdowns (13 passing, 12 rushing) as a junior. Holds virtually every school record for a passer, including passing yards, touchdown passes and completion percentage. Three-time first-team all-conference honoree and three-year team captain. Was the starting quarterback for the North squad in the 2016 Blue-Grey All-American Bowl in Tampa
Film Breakdown: As a passer, he is by far the most developed quarterback prospect that Georgia Tech has landed during Paul Johnson's tenure as head coach. It is easy to tell that he was well coached in high school. His back-shoulder passes are a thing of beauty. The way he can change up his release velocity to match the type of throw he is making is something special for a high school player. As a runner, Johnson shows all the necessary physical abilities required in order to be dangerous in Paul Johnson's spread option attack. He will have to work on his running and the reads if he is going to be a starter.

Tobias Oliver - 6-2 / 185
2017-Redshirt
2018- RS Fr
High School Notes: Totaled 3,064 yards (1,604 passing, 1,460 rushing) and 31 touchdowns (16 passing, 15 rushing) as a senior. Led team to state championship as a sophomore in 2014 and appearance in state semifinals as a senior in 2016. Amassed 7,003 yards of offense during prep career with a school-record 3,785 passing yards and 3,218 rushing yards (good for No. 3 in school history). two-year team captain.
Film Breakdown: Oliver’s length, athleticism, and running abilities are excellent and should translate very well to the next level. He shows great balance to extend runs and cause would-be tacklers lots of issues. His acceleration is really impressive, and his top-end speed is a strong quality as well. He’s a very natural runner, and seems comfortable running between the tackles or on the perimeter. Oliver has work to do in order to succeed as a quarterback on the Flats, primarily in the passing game. His throwing motion needs some work and he will need to work on his footwork in order to play from under center.

James Graham - 6-1 / 180
2018- Freshman (Redshirt TBD)
High School Notes: Missed part of the senior season due to injury. Led team to the 2A state championship in 2015 and a runner-up finish in 2016. Threw for 1,725 yards, rushed for 956 and totaled 39 touchdowns as a junior. Quarterbacked high school team to a 26-4 combined record over his sophomore and junior seasons before injury.
Film Breakdown: Graham has scorching speed, reads blocks well, and has the bend and balance to break lower body tackles and make shifty moves to get to the open. Graham also moves well in the pocket, he keeps his eyes downfield when scrambling, and is remarkably accurate in situations where he can’t set his feet. He will occasionally throw behind the receiver. He may redshirt if he needs time to fully recovered from his injury.

Great job Fletch! James will probably need to redshirt but make no mistake this guy has the "IT" factor. That leaves Tobias, LJ, and TM. I would like to see a true open quarterback competition but in all likelihood it will not happen. TM will remain the starter. In that case, he needs to improve in virtually all aspects of being a triple option quarterback particularly in pitching the ball. His footwork is very good and no one should question his heart, toughness, and running ability but for the love of God 37% passing rate again will ensure another losing season IMHO.

Don't forget about Barrett if we can land him and for some reason, I think that we will.
Also, I know that he probably won't start (or even play for that matter) but is Martenson on scholarship for the upcoming season?

Why no open competition?

Well, you know how it goes. There will be lip service paid to the effect of: "Every position is open"... " best player plays" etc. But we all know that TM is the quarterback and Coach Johnson can be uh stubborn to put it charitably about these things.

THWG,how many players did GT sign?;)(y) I know Tennessee signed 14 so far.
18. The only player committed that didn't sign is C'Bo Flemister. I believe that we have room for 23 since TD transferred. There have been rumors that Tech will get an OL transfer so if C'Bo signs then that leaves 3 scholarships and I believe that Barrett will be one of them (no inside info, just a gut feeling).

Do you think Barrett would be an upgrade over who we have now and/or James Grant? If so, I can't wait to see him because down here Grant is regarded as the real deal.

I don’t think Barrett will be playing QB for GT if he comes. I think it could be Bback, S, or LB. I could be wrong though.

I’ve heard Barrett doesn’t want to play QB in college. This is just hear say of course. But him and Graham are two different type of QB’s. I think Graham gives you more shifty to power balance, but Barrett is a strong down hill runner and he’s a big dude.

Kinda like in 17 when the coach’s “favorite”, MJ, entered the fall as the projected / expected starter.

I personally think that they are both the real deal. Graham is faster and more agile, but I think that Barrett is the better passer (only by a slim margin though). It really just depends on who can make the reads.

Seems like everyone was saying that Matthew Jordan was the QB for the 2017 season this time last year...

If Tech gets any undergraduate transfers, say, e.g., Dufoor from Ole Miss, wouldn't he likely be on campus now for the start of the semester? Wouldn't waiting to come after this semester potentially create issues with scholarship availability?
