How many of our guys can do 25 reps on the pro bench press (225lbs)? I have it from a trusted source that Kirby Smart says only 3 current mutts can do so. That shocked me and seems to be a crazy low number for a big time P5 program.

Guess this has something to do with the mutts clearing out their S&C peeps.

Not suprised, that's not an easy task to do. some of the top guys in the nfl combine in 2015 didn't even do make it to 25. The d line and o line in the combine had less than half the guys do it. The average was around 23 for linemen, 5 linebackers did it 6 running backs, and 1 DB accomplished it.

I believe I quoted the wrong number earlier...which should have been 20 instead. Your point is noted however. I'll double check tomorrow for correct #.

High reps without rest is really hard, believe it or not. I once tried to do 50 reps of 45 when my max was 185 back when I was 16 in high school. Couldn't get past 35 I think. I thought I'd have no problem. I was wrong.

Got confirmation. Smart said he has 3 players capable of 20 or more reps of 225.

That still seems a bit low to me and as conveyed to me Smart was not pleased with the fact. Bet Bama has a different reality. Maybe their SnC guru is more than hot air after all.

This is also not as objective as it sounds. There's a lot of wrong ways to do a rep that get counted, and having bad form can cause injury and be counter-productive to building the strength you are targeting.

Personally, I'm not sure if Stanford's indirect measures of strength/athleticism aren't more meaningful. Actually, I think we should measure our athletes by what they can do while wearing pads and cleats instead of any other kind of measure.

I order for measurements to mean anything in comparison to other measurements, all have to be done under equal conditions. But I get your point. I'd much rather see a kid fast in pads on a football field that in track shoes and tights.

I also think that high bench reps are a very poor measure of football strength. When I was really in shape - see above - I was no better then a decent football player. In part that was because of semi-treated knee injuries (they didn't have a clue in those days), but all that strength didn't translate into the flexibility and speed I needed to really excel. That's why I think the Stanford program is so promising. Wish we had had something like that when I was playing football.
