So who leaves? Attrition.

Yes. Anyone telling you otherwise is trying to make themselves feel better about the several players being shown the door.

No one needs to tell him different or defend anything. Collins was never obligated to put him on scholarship, but did it because he earned it. You think any team is retaining specialists on scholarship who aren't playing, though? Fantasy land. All the best to Wells.

I would guess all 3 will have GT degrees. King and Hansen are close to graduating and Wells walked on to begin with, so ultimately, he got a year of school paid for and will always have the great moments from 2018 like the game winner vs uva.
That is great news. Glad you brought up the UVA game. It absolutely was a great moment. I remember thinking, oh no he is perfect until - - - -and he still is!

This is where Tech fans drive me crazy. They want to be different than the factories with regards to “processing” and recruiting. But when we lose to factories they’re upset because we should be a top program. They want the athletic program to reflect the academic standards of the rest of the Institute’s, but when but when players are leaving because they’re ineligible or we can’t recruit at a top 10 level they’re upset because, “how can we not be top 10 in recruiting when we’re in Atlanta?” If you truly want Georgia Tech to become an elite football program you’re going to have to accept the fact that elite programs do things differently than Tech has in the past. If you want Georgia Tech to continue its past history of “honesty” or whatever you have to accept the fact that Tech will never be more than an average program. So the question Tech fans need to ask themselves is if they want to be elite, or if they want to continue to be different.

With all of that said, there’s still no proof that Tech is processing kids anyway. There’s no proof that CPJ or other previous staffs didn’t. You don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors. Don’t act like you do. (Not you specifically Mac, but you as a general term.) “Processing” happens every where from Ohio State to Reinhardt, some places do it dirtier than others. It’s not a new phenomenon, and it’s not new to Tech either. You don’t think there’s been a single player “processed” out since the Dodd days? You’re insane.
I agree no one knows for sure. X players have told people it was done it the past but no one wants to believe it.

Yea, I don't want to believe it, but from the interview with CGC, and his reaction to the Wells and King question, it is pretty clear he processed them and did not want to answer the question.

I viewed his reaction as he started to answer but then realized he was not sure what was public. I think he knew he basically gave it away so just smiled. He gives that grin often when he is not supposed to"say" anything about a topic but implys a confirmation to the question.

Was Wells ever told he would have a scholarship for the remainder of his eligibility? I highly doubt it. That usually is not the case with walkons. Unless the student athlete was misled no one should have a problem. I do not understand why some are assuming something wrong was done.

Wow, there’s several people getting hot about this. You compete for everything in life, except GT Football scholarships?

You get Hope out of HS. What happens when you bag a 2.5?

You get a Presidential Scholarship and end up on & off probation. Do you get to keep it?

You fail Calculus, do you get to graduate?

You get to your first job. You perform poorly. Your company’s supposed to let you hang around because they promised you employment?

C’mon people, why are we so adamant about depriving newcomers the chance to compete by carrying a bunch of dead wood on the roster for 4 years? We’re not kicking them out of GT, they’re just meeting the harsh reality of life that they’re not good enough for a spot on a competitive roster. Damn. We’re actually supposed to be wanting to win football games here not run some welfare program.

I hope Collins and the rest of the Tech community holds Patenaude to this same standard.
Get ready for this rotation for the first four games:
First down: Graham
Second down: Yates
Third down: Simms / Gleason

I just want us to be up front about things to our SAs. Hope is a good example. Other scholarships may not have the same requirements, some simply stay enrolled full-time and in good standing. But you're not going to have your chain yanked about the rules. You know that when you accept the ship. Things might get stickier with regime changes. But in all fairness I haven't heard anyone comment here that actually knows these players and how things went. How do we even know their decisions were about football? As for Wells scholarship last year, I would have a problem if he was given different expectations about retaining it than what happened even if in writing it was only ever a 1 year deal. Again, I have no actual information on what did happen, though. Does anyone else have anything to offer more than speculation?

If he proves unable to get the job done then you better believe the Tech community will hold him to the same standard. In fact if you’ve been reading this and any other boards you should already know that he’s really the only assistant coach that has been getting grief from the Tech community thus far. Personally I’m still not sold on him but I’m not going to judge him on one year.

This isn’t directly solely to you but more of a group question. Does the same standard apply for the coaching staff? If we don’t go to a bowl game this year, is everyone on board with firing coaches. The kid had a Great 1st year and a bad 2 year and now is off scholly due to one bad year. Does 2 bad years get the coaching staff fired? For cgc sake I really hope we don’t lose a game next year due missed fg. (Yes I know we have lost games in the last couple of years due to missed fg).

Maybe this shows our Kickers coming in are better?

It certainly shows that our coach believes they are.

In terms of the general question Liberty Turns nailed it hard. In any situation when a new boss arrives s/he must have the flexibility to upgrade the personnel as best s/he can within the operational framework. Believing that the guys who signed on with the previous boss will not be put in a position to earn their stripes is ludicrous. Giving a scholarship to a kid is a commitment for 1 year. Letting those who are not up to current standards know that fact is doing them a favor. Then they can make their own decision about whether they want to put in the work as a member of the BTL crew with little or no opportunity of seeing the field. A certain portion will decide that is not what they want and find another alternative. Some others will practice but not play and will not travel to away games.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I have not heard of a scholarship given to an incoming freshman being pulled during their time here (though I know of numerous ones who only ever saw the field in blowouts). Giving information to a player that he uses to decide how to best finish his academic/athletic time in college is useful. Same as it is useful (regardless of the impact on the person's ego) for a Math Prof to tell them by the grade given in Calc that maybe the student is not cut out for chemical engineering. They will find out sooner or later anyway and the early warning can save much grief down the road.
