I don’t buy that- Gibbs‘ stats weren’t much better at Bama then at Tech, NFL scouts were fully aware of him at both places
Bama, under Saban, did a really good job of prepping players for the NFL. Defensive players were especially well prepared for a while. Saban isn't there now, and while they're still a big fish, they aren't the same team as they were under peak Saban.
Gibbs got publicity, but Bama didn't showcase him well or do much to improve his draft prospects. He was probably drafted as much on what he did here as what he did at Bama. To some degree, I'd even say Bama his his talent.
TFG basically drove him away by being a bad coach.
Key went through Saban university and runs a disciplined ship. you can already see results. We have been prepping players well on offense, and now we're doing that on defense. We can improve, and each time Key has needed to improve the coaching staff, he's done so.
For example, if he was here this year, I think Kennard has the same kind of year here as he had at South Carolina. Part of that is being a senior. He would have had good coaching this year.

Again, one complaint our opponents have about is is that we're well coached. NFL scouts know where the good coaches are, and they look for the players they train.

Also, With a couple off game changers, we become scary.

Schools are not paying this money. The NIL isn't coming from the AA, the NCAA has no ability to cap it. I am actually surprised that NIL collectives are as involved with coaches and AAs as they have become

This all really started with a few athletes having huge social media followings and wanting to collect that money. They weren't huge on social media because they played at a particular school but because they were charismatic. The NCAA has no way of regulating how much an athlete can earn from Instagram, YouTube, etc.
You're completely right. What the NCAA should have done was capped transfer rules or reinstate a rule of sitting a year when you decide to transfer a second time? Idk if that would even work. Unlikely they'll ever do anything now though.

Gibbs is excellent. Calvin is a Hall of Fame player. There is a difference. No telling how it would have gone for Gibbs had he stayed at GT. Maybe as good and maybe not.

Glad he was here 2 years.
You’re right, there is a huge difference, but it was not the players. Gibbs was on a generationally bad Georgia Tech team. All indications at the time of his departure were that it would continue to be generationally bad. He truly would get no help showcasing his abilities.

As for Singleton, he is playing on a team that just posted some of the highest viewed football games of the entire season. It is not as if there is no exposure. If he is leaving because he wants more opportunities to catch passes, I get it. That raises a question as to why he is not more of an impact receiver here… But I digress.

However, I won’t accept the narrative that playing at other schools prepares you for the NFL in a way Georgia Tech does not. I can accept that the factories are getting a higher volume of players that meet the prototypical NFL standard, and therefore they tend to place a higher number of guys in the NFL. If your assertion is that they are doing something systematically that we are not doing, that is a fixable problem that must be addressed immediately. For what it’s worth I think our staff believes we can improve on both getting the NFL caliber guys AND preparing them for the league. We fans need to stop acting like future success is only achievable by leaving Georgia Tech. Why do we have to recruit against our own fans’ garbage propaganda?

I haven't crunched the numbers, but I would bet dollars to drachmas there is a high correlation between team recruiting rankings and the number of players these teams have in the NFL.

Okay. Baybay, 1st rounder (22). Derrick Morgan, 1st Rounder (16). Both were excellent. Neither was a Hall of Fame player.

Derrick Morgan, Morgan Burnett, Michael Johnson, Daryl Smith. All had long careers as NFL starters. Daryl smith played for 15 years.
GT didn’t make those guys, just as Bama didn’t make Gibbs great.
If you’re pulling top 5 classes every year, you get more high end athletes like that. Some of them are great college players and some are at the top end of measurables and get drafted despite less than stellar game tape. Some flame out. But you get more chances to find those type of guys with highly rated classes.

What I’m saying is that I think the idea that playing for Bama prepares you for the nfl more than GT is nonsense. Bama didn’t teach linebackers to be 6’4 250 and run like a deer just as GT doesn’t. There’s also a laundry list of guys from ALL schools that aren’t NFL measurable guys but are GREAT college players. Guys like Julian Burnett are among the great MLB to ever play for GT, but he was 5’10 with cleats on, and NFL don’t play that. He was a great player but didn’t make the NFL, and wouldn’t have if he started for Bama either.
Julian didn't even finish his GT career. He retired from his neck injury.

But that’s not the argument being made. So Calvin goes 1 instead of 2 if he played somewhere else? I doubt it.

People act like these football coaches at every school don’t understand the fundamentals of how to play a position. Are some better at developing talent than others - sure - but aside from goofballs (looking at you Waffle House), most position coaches are good enough to teach an NFL caliber player what he needs to do to be ready for the league. And if they aren’t all it takes is a workout in front of the scouts (who literally visit every school) to catch their eye and get recognized.

Point being - if you’re capable of playing in the NFL and have the desire to do so then you can play in the NFL.
Never said that. Just that he would have better stats. The best player doesn’t always go first in the draft. NFL teams typically take needs at the beginning of the draft and not BPA.

The short version is that the NCAA isn't allowed to restrain player movement or compensation unless they recognize the players as employees and collectively bargain those restrictions with them.

They got themselves in this position by refusing to do anything to reform/allow player compensation for decades, so the courts got to decide on the basis of law, where (basically) the entire system was destroyed as an obvious restraint of trade.

One glaring counter example unfortunately is the Lions. Who had far more pressing needs than WR but picked Calvin. I have always wondered how things would have played out had CJ gone to amore succesful and/or visible franchise. Not that his career was bad at Detroit (first ballot HoF). But him playing there for the entirety of his career is probably much sadder than Gibbs playing two years on a bad GT team coached by the TFG.

It would be nice if folks could keep in mind that Singleton might end up right back here next season playing once again for the Jackets. He hasn't gone anywhere yet.
I would say the odds of that are very very small. There are lots of reports across media of interest and bag offers from other teams...if even half of them are true then the die is cast. Is what it is, I have every faith that when we kick off in August we will have at least 85 players who will give it their best shot.

Got it - so unlimited transferring is allowed because limiting it restrains athletes ability to earn compensation for NIL.

His stats were nearly identical at Alabama to his two years at Tech. He would have been taken in roughly the same spot.
I’m honestly extremely disappointed you believe this. Because you know ball. We’re box score watching when projecting draft position?

Gibbs had 544 scrimmage yards and five TDs in three weeks against Arkansas, A&M, and Tennessee. Then followed it up with 163 against Tennessee two weeks later.

Idk what you guys are trying to grasp on to. But comparisons to Calvin Johnson 20 years ago and attempting to apples-to-apples Gibbs’ performance and exposure by purely box score watching is beneath all of you.

Why? Gibbs looked at least as electric here, with worse blocking. He was not featured in the same way at Bama. He was showcased better here, even with TFG, than he was at Bama

Clearly, BKE is saying that playing at Bama didn’t help Gibbs in draft selection—and I don’t think it did

Yes, and as a matter of fact, Gibbs' production at Tech was more impressive than at Alabama because of the difference in the offensive lines he ran behind.
Are you talking about his game against Syracuse or VT? Or the one against UVA? He did produce against Duke!
