Singleton to Portal

The other issue is since we have taking a couple of WR transfers plus our incoming freshman class, despite how good Singleton is do we have room and NIL money to bring him back.

Singleton is good. I hope he comes back. He will help our offense. But at this point if it's between paying him or picking up several contributors on defense, I would rather use that NIL $ on defense. In a perfect world we would have enough money for both. I just don't see that being the case.
Here's the problem - we are spending NIL money on other players right now under the assumption that he isn't coming back. We already have two WR's out of the transfer portal - one that appears to be a 1:1 replacement. Even if he has a change of heart it's very likely that we won't be able to offer him the same money he is getting elsewhere, nor is there any guarantee we can get him the same money he was getting here before.

FWIW, Auburn is announcing another round of price increases on season tix, justifying it by the NIL. Top players are in the million plus range, marquee players 2-3 million.

I've noticed multiple Jackets across basketball and football. They are doing great. I think GT needs to think of itself as a feeder school because... that's what is happening. A bad thing? No. Just predictable. Follow the money.

How is that possible? The school itself cannot play the players right? Only the collectives - can the school give money to the collectives?

There's a bunch of folks in this thread that need to chill. I'm not one of 'em.
You do need to chill. ES left GT for more money. He will make more money. Life changing money likely. Playing a game. I hope he does well, but it's almost certain he won't be a Jacket so I really don't care. It seems that GT knew to move on and did so. I will cheer for those who want to be in W&G, and ES didn't. He chose money.

Nah. It's definitely funny. He made his bed. Thought he was too big time for this program and the market clearly disagrees. He gets what he gets.

None of us have any idea about anything other than he's in the portal. Period.

Could be indirectly “donations have decreased since people are spending on nil” or even just “we want to raise prices cause we want money and here’s an excuse.”

Unless you know how much he's getting in NIL, that's quite the assumption that the market disagrees.

If we're not making baseless assumptions what are we doing on a free message board. Be logical, why is the #1 transfer not signed? Either he's being very picky or none of his initial choices are willing to meet his #. These deals aren't that complex.

I just fail to understand why fans want to treat these kids like they are student athletes of old. No need to treat guys with kid gloves when they're trying to extract the max value from schools. These aren't naive 19 yr olds making their way in the world. They have agents. These guys don't care about GT in the same way that I (a pre NIL GT football player) or any other fan does. Transactional behavior is a two way street imo.

Nothing wrong with maximizing your earnings, go get yours. But you're looking at the program and your teammates and saying "I can do better than this set up". Hard for me to feel tons of warm fuzzies towards a guy like that

I believe there is still a thing with parents wanting their kids to get a good education. ESJ has three semesters toward a GT framed wall hanging. That ain't nothing, especially if the NIL offers are not what he expected.

Yes and yes. There's also a feeling that everyone is tapped out
I was hoping to hear from you. Any rumors around the campus about this topic?

Beyond what I've said?

Auburn is beginning to charge for the grass growing under your feet. There's a general recognition that buying players is the new game.

Fortunately, AU has alumni that can write hundred million dollar checks. And will. And do.

It's a kid's life direction we're talking about. Why would y'all revel in what could be a bad outcome for him. That's not funny.
The new reality of NIL / payments to players will continue to erode fan's connections to these players. One of the great things about having players here for four years was watching them develop and learning more about them as people. These were "Tech Men" who were going through the same thing at school that we all did (mostly), and we wanted them to do well on the field and in life. They had committed to play here and be here for 4 years (almost always) which is what we all did when we chose GT.

In the past 2-3 years the whole thing has been turned into a transactional system with little similarity to the experience any of us had. When we don't think people are connected to the same thing we are ("Ma Tech") then we don't have the same affinity for them and don't care as much about who they are, we only care about what they can do for the football team. So the fandom is changing to be more like the NFL as well - he's our guy if he's on our team but if he's not playing for us then screw 'em.

NFL players have to spend a fair number of years with a team or to make a huge impact for them to be "beloved" by that fanbase if they aren't playing for the home team anymore. For example: Adam Thielen (I live in Charlotte). When the Vikings played in Charlotte last year, I saw a ton of Viking's Thielen jerseys. He played there (MN) for 9 years and was one of their better players over that time, and the fans loved him. But that was nine years. How many two-year players are loved by the team they left? Maybe Tom Brady in Tampa.

UNC just hired a General Manager making more than $1M for their football team - they need someone to make the value assessments and trade-offs managing their salary cap. College football is now a transactional marketplace that is actually worse than the NFL because everyone can go into free agency every year and there is no salary cap or structure and no transparency to the playing field. It's only natural that fans aren't going to feel connected to the players who are far less connected to the college itself.

So I think what you're seeing is pretty standard. The human experience of relating to the players on our team is reduced when there is no actual commitment past the next season, and fans reaction is going to be based on what they think the player did for the program. In this thread, the comments have been relatively tame, but we shouldn't be surprised if people think it is funny if he falls on his face. Because he's not "one of us" anymore, he's a thing we're buying for performance. When relationships become transactional you see things like this. It's unfortunate but that's what college football is now.
