Sims Injury?

Sims has more talent. He should continue to start especially if we are losing games. That is just the facts.

Every school develops a quarterback controversy until they win consistently. Look at FSU. Milton is a gamer but I’m not sure he should be the starter.

Watched the OC presser this morning. Basically said Sims starts without confirming it. Talks about how great he practices.

Yates and Sims should both get plenty of playing time the next two games. By the UNC game we should know who we are going with. If Sims injuries aren't lingering, and he shakes off the pretty awful performance in the first game then I would be surprised if he lost his job.

So, Collins and Patenaude have 3-4 days to get Sims’ mechanics and reads fixed. In this offense, the QB has to throw, and they need a high completion percentage. QBs have to maintain control of the ball (low to no turnovers), and make quick decisions. Sims wasn’t doing that on Saturday.
Running is a nice factor in a RPO QB, but it’s a secondary skill; they have to pass and they have to get their passing attempts. If you’re running 75% of the time in an RPO, you’re in the wrong offense.
This is a tough situation for an OC. Sims has a lot of upside, and if you want to unlock that upside then he has to get his reps—especially his passing reps. If you do it wrong, then you [a} lose and you {b} destroy his confidence and ability to learn. If you bench him, you might also destroy his confidence and his ability to learn.

Watch how WF runs their QB mesh. He holds the ball when the RB is moving into the hole and pulls it out the last possible moment which frees the LB. We seem to make the handoff from a standing start with an early read. I would have thought we would be better at that play with the backs we have.

Performance trumps talent every time. Anybody in any other field would be fired for lack of performance no matter how much talent they had.
It is too early to start thinking about a quarterback controversy but it was apparent at least to me, that Yates much like he was in high school has that "IT" factor when the lights come on. I am sure that Sims being bigger, stronger, faster with a big time arm to match has all the tools but does he have that ever elusive "IT" factor that separates successful quarterbacks from the clip board holders? Don't ask me to define IT as IT is sort of like what Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart wrote in a decision on pornography. "Don't ask me to define pornography but I know it when I see it" Same with the IT factor for quarterbacks...you can't define it but you know it when you see it. There I think I have worn that personal pronoun out for one post.

Everything seems to “look” like it’s slow developing - this may be a reason why. Sims looks flatfooted when he’s making the read or handoff. He may not be, but it sure looks that way and to my eyes the D is getting time to react. My eyes may be completely wrong on this.

Wake quarterbacks really hold that ball a long time in the mesh which as I think you meant to say "freezes" the linebackers. I don't know though if our quarterbacks want to trust their life and limb to an offensive line that has way too many matador blocks.

I don't understand the bolded comment.

They really need to get Sims more high percentage short yardage easy throws early to get his confidence up
This ^^
I thought the OC could have helped him out here.
Anyway Sims had a bad game. That happens. Sims also took GT to Tallahassee & WON. He wasn’t the sole reason for losses last year. People need to calm down and stop being prisoners of the moment. I like Yates, but Yates couldn’t beat out Graham nor Sims in now three summers so relax.

I thought he had some good chances at some shorter passes, a couple of which he hit. Pretty sure he would've gotten into a rhythm if he'd stayed in... hoping to see him do just that this Saturday.

Not a single call for Yates to start preseason.

Sims goes 3 for 8.

Yates must start game 2.
This issue is we were all told how much better Sims was. His accuracy, understanding of the offense, etc all vastly improved. Then he trots out against a bottom feeder defense and misses 60% of his passes, some wide open. Scores ZERO points in 20-25 mins.

The back up, you’d think would have had less reps particularly with the starters, comes in and engineers a 97 yd, 18 play TD drive. Manages 3 TDs in 35-40 mins.

There was ZERO controversy until the performances were what they were.

It is a tough situation, but the confidence factor also applies to Yates. If he comes in like a new spark plug and brings us from 2 TD's down to the lead but ends up back on the bench...

The FSU game from last year actually has me wondering. He went 12/16 in the first three drives of that game, 15/23 in the first half. He actually looked much better than he did against NIU. How is it that he performs so much better in his first college game, with little real prep time against a talented defense than he does against a pretty bad team in year two with plenty of prep time? Hopefully its just a one game thing and not a confidence issue.
