I just received this from my buddy, Chad G. Petey:

Georgia Tech fans should be happy about an invitation to the Birmingham Bowl for several reasons:

1. Prestige of the Matchup

  • The Birmingham Bowl features strong tie-ins with the SEC and AAC conferences, meaning Georgia Tech is likely to face a quality opponent. Competing against a recognized or well-respected program provides a chance for national exposure and enhances the team’s reputation.

2. Postseason Achievement

  • Bowl eligibility represents progress for the program. Georgia Tech has been rebuilding under Coach Brent Key, and making a bowl game is a step forward. Playing in the Birmingham Bowl gives players additional practice time, which is critical for team development and preparation for future seasons.

3. Proximity to Georgia Tech Fans

  • Birmingham, Alabama, is close to Atlanta, making it accessible for Georgia Tech fans to attend and show support. This proximity could lead to a strong fan presence, creating a home-field-like advantage and boosting morale for the team.

4. Recruiting Boost

  • Bowl games enhance visibility and provide a stage to impress recruits. Georgia Tech can showcase its growth and future potential while competing in a game televised nationally. A successful performance could attract talented recruits to the program.

5. Celebration of Success

  • After recent struggles, earning a bowl invitation validates the hard work of the team, coaching staff, and administration. It gives fans a reason to celebrate progress and optimism for the program's future.
In summary, an invitation to the Birmingham Bowl is a meaningful opportunity for Georgia Tech to demonstrate its improvement, gain exposure, and celebrate its achievements with fans. It reflects a positive step forward for a team building toward sustained success.

I'm inclined to agree with him. He can make mistakes...but he's usually right.

When do they decide if it’s a 12 noon or 3:30 game?

Also, for those of us fans that don’t live in ATL (like me), going to Birmingham is a definite no. It’s a tier 3 bowl and we finished behind only Miami, Louy, Cuse, and Duke in the standings.

I'll never tell
I think we need to think about the matchup more than the “tier”. Us playing and SEC team in B’ham is another exciting game that will have the spotlight on us to build our brand. Playing some boring matchup in San Diego may be a little funner for the players, but we need to build on this momentum. Stomping a sec team a mile away from the sec headquarters would send another strong message .

This would have been the only bowl I could make in person.

If we’re better than this bowl, let’s prove it by WRECKING whoever we play.

Go jackets! Next year we’ll be in the CFP so this bowl is just whatever

Why can't the Birmingham Bowl figure out who our opponent is? Do we have sec teams running away from us & trying to stick us with Tulane or Memphis?

Disagree. The games are more about money / viewership. Duke doesn’t have a real fanbase and played no one.

VT lost three of their last four to lesser teams. And before you mention that VT beat us without King, we beat Duke full strength.

We got shafted.
This is pure facts.

Duke has a 9-3 record and I don't see a huge difference in Birmingham vs Dukes Mayo.

We also don’t have the fanbase VT has. As you said, it’s about viewership. And more importantly ticket sales

If that’s the way it’s looked at, then we should play 3 nobodies and uga every year. Duke played a charmin schedule and doesn’t deserve the gator bowl imo
Perhaps we should. Especially in the 12 team playoff world.

If we did that though everyone would be on here bitching about no good home game match ups.

2 things can be true at the same time:

1. It’s legitimate to gripe that Duke got a MUCH better bowl game than us (opponent and location) when we had the same conference record, we beat them H2H, and we very likely would travel better as a fan base

2. We ultimately really only have ourselves to blame for being in this situation by failing to finish off uga and by losing to an awful VT team

The whining is crazy to me. We’re likely to play a quality opponent within driving distance of campus. For a 7-5 team, I’ll take it. Remember the Little Caesar’s Bowl?
We should have been 8-4 playing a significant portion of schedule with a hobbled starting QB and RBs 1-4 heavily dinged. That ref fiasco in the nutlicker game cost us a really good bowl against a top quality opponent. Yeah we got lucky and got paired with Ou, but they are 6-6, not exactly the Lincoln Riley Ou team of old.
