I agree and disagree. The effect on the DL is different but the playside result is the same. The WR occupies the corner, the AB (slot WR) occupies the OLB/Nickel leaving the RB one on one with the safety.
We block it differently from time to time depending on the defensive alignment, and sometimes leave the DE unblocked, but the concept is the same as a quick pass to the slot.

IIRC previous coaches have done that same thing which I bolded here, and whether under them or under CPJ, it seldom worked and often resulted in a loss of yardage.

Yea... effective screens for GT would likely require Jarrett, Searcy, Lynch, Benson, and Dontae Smith on the field. Bunch of A-Backs who are also pass catchers.
There are running back screens... WR screens.... jailbreak screens... Lots of different screen passes in use with seemingly EVERY other team.
Air Force and New Mexico (now Georgia Southern) run wish-bone and send guys into the flats who can catch screen passes.. Lots of options, but CPJ has to want to throw a screen pass.

GT right now runs the most basic option offense of any school still running it. Every option program except GT (including both Army and Navy) have added a shotgun package and a slightly more varied pass package in general.
i still think CPJ was scarred by the Vad year and is pretty determined to simply run a very basic option offense. Will be interesting to see with new QB's next year how open the offense is.

CPJ really likes the pistol gun formation. The problem has always been with our ability to block it. JT was really good from the pistol too, but in 14 CPJ went back to basics and had a ton of success. If I am him, why would I go back to doing the gun stuff when I had my best year abandoning it? You can run our whole offense from the gun as App State tends to do, but it requires you to execute the reads at a high level to work or your 1 yard loss is a 7 yard loss. The gun is easier for the qb to throw from, but the challenge has always been blocking.

It isn't that we can't throw screens, it's that we don't. Of course we can. Who can't throw a screen? We threw one at Ugag and it worked. I think it may have been the only one we've thrown all year. Likewise button hooks. Very hard to defend against, and one that we very rarely use. Why? I have no idea.

That across the field "trick play" pass yesterday to Graham showed TQM's lack of arm strength. If that had been a division 1 passing QB, it would have been "snap" and there, but it was slow arriving. Watch the video - it seems like an eternity.

We've thrown some BB screens over top of blitzes this year, but for whatever reason TQM and TO wouldn't check down to them if it wasn't a called play. Additionally, that type of screen is less effective when the defense brings at most 4 and still is in a jailbreak scenario.
More and more, I've come to believe that, while I love the offense, we need to throw at least 5 times in the forst half of every game. BB screens, wheel routes to AB/BB or a corner route, but build up some QB confidence.
Especially in games that we have in hand, stop playing nice and work on the **** that we need to work on.
Maybe our defense will improve enough that CPJ feels he can do this without risking falling behind, but we have to pass better than we have the last two years or we'll be in for another uninspiring season next year.

I agree.... Simple to execute passes should be part of the offense. BB and AB screens... WR screens... little slip screens.... easy crossing routes... These are things that any D1 QB should be able to execute.
And again.... the other option teams are doing these things. Air Force is in the shotgun 35% of the time. This is just CPJ being stubborn about it from what I can tell.

Good point. Most teams have been averaging 7 yards per play against UGA, so we should just switch to one of those offenses.
Just to be clear, is it your honest opinion that CPJ believes that more shotgun and screen passes would help the team win more games, but he simply refuses to run those plays because he wants to prove that "his scheme" works? Is that really what you believe?

I'm not the OP but at this point it really doesn't matter what CPJ thinks but only the results on the field and the number of fans willing to watch it and donate to the program matter. That's a decision TStan has to make. I can only speak to people I know but most people i know have completely stopped caring and gave up their tickets. I went to the Clemson game this year and my section was basically empty except for Clemson fans.

Ironically, we should have beat USF and Pitt, IMO. Had we done that ... we would have had a pretty good year. So even though we don't have Top 25 resources, we aren't doing THAT terrible. I see it more as a discpline issue than anything.
Re passing, Ken N said in the TO, the purpose of the pass is to do so over the defense's head for a big play. Run it, run the clock, keep the play count down and passing keeps them from figuring out the run. In this respect, I think CPJ has not done a great job. I don't mind 5 passes a game if they are all for 40 yds each.
