Do y'all think recruiting stars matter? Just wondering out loud here and was curious if anyone here had given this any thought?

Yes, if the goal is to win championships you clearly have to recruit at a top 5-10 level. If the goal is to consistently be above .500, then rankings aren’t the most important thing. Development and getting good qb play will get you to above average especially in the ACC.

No, Collins owns all the damage.
PJ didn't lose to The Citadel. And he also never got shut out at home by a Va Tech team that wound up canning its coach eventually. PJ never lost to Fuente. His successor never beat Fuente, and Fuente got fired.

And once again, I'll play the cupboard game. Here's what PJ left YKW....
An entire starting offensive line (6-1, 260 my butt. Quinney damn sure wasn't 6-1 and Cooper and Hansen damn sure weren't 260. For Quinney, he might have ended the season closer to 260, but that's because it's hard to keep weight - when you're running downfield all the time to pulverize DBs. But I digress...)
Two 4 star QBs. Yates and Graham.
Four star DBs in Kaleb Oliver, Tre Swilling, Gentry Bonds, Jaylon King,
Four-star LB in Bruce Jordan-Swilling
Four-star OLB/DE in Justice Dingle
(Rivals called them four stars. Got a problem with their rating? Call Rivals. Or the coaches who failed to develop them. But somebody thought they were pretty good).That's eight four-star guys. In addition to:
Future pro RB in Jordan Mason.
Future pro DBs in Tariq Carpenter and Juanyeh Thomas.
Plus Charlie Thomas, Dontae Smith, Jordan Domineck .....
I left out Brandon Adams, who I thought had NFL potential, because what happened wasn't YKW's fault.

Once again, the reign of error that was YKW was shown to be just that and even worse than we could have thought.

I have and they do. Given your druthers every coach would have preferred to have a team made up of 4 - 5 stars. That said, there are two caveats:

• You have to have a radar that sees the capability of players you can get and retain within the schemes you are using. The best examples would be on O during Paul's years. Clifton Lynch: a two star out fo high school who became ridiculously successful at Tech. Robert Godhigh: another two star who walked open and turned out to be a true rambling man, one of the best pass receivers at Tech for years. Dedrick Mills: a three star, but rated that for his skills at LB. Paul took one look and knew he had his second Adrian Peterson. There are plenty of other examples.

• I'd be glad if Tech could get 7 - 8 4 stars a year. We'd be more successful. But such success can close your eyes to opportunities. An example: Adam Gotsis. Here's a guy who played US football on a club basis in OZ, of all places. Would you be attuned to giving him a look if you knew you'd get "proven" recruits anyway?

Recruiting can ne very hit or miss. You can get players who look fantastic in high school and don't work out as well in college. If you go over to the 247 board and look at our top 15 recruits of all time you'll find that five of them turned out to be reserves or part-time starters. That's why I always want Tech coaches to recruit as hard as they can, but to have a nose for talent that is under the radar. Having a lot of recruiting assistants can lead to group think about the "kind of players we want". The kind of players we want are the ones who work hard to develop their skills and then get on the field as starters and deliver. I could care less about how many "stars" they have.

And unfortunately the Geoff Collins era could be characterized as unprepared. I understand the talent gap between those two teams, but CPJ dealt with talent gaps vs many teams we faced and lack of preparation was never an issue

Sure the "lack of preparation" was an issue...for the other team facing the triple option at times.
