Ice,
One of the my lowest points at Tech was cold Windy winter night when I picked up my punch cards (Fortran) outside the computer bldg and the rubber band holding them BROKE. The wind carried then everywhere. Only 5 hrs time mostly lost in a second. ---ah, Tech.
Similar experience and figuring there was no future in such nonsense….

There was a kid from Haiti in my class I had to jump in and save. Haiti for crying out loud.

And my partner from Mass who i saved daily, as well as a bunch of others. In my class of about 50, I think 10 of us were strong swimmers, so we had to play lifeguard the rest of the time.

That duty kept me from talking to the 1 girl in the class.
Man… I would’ve saved her daily. Or if that failed, tried drowning next to her…

Your sacrifice in focusing on your duty to your classmates in not talking to that chick is duly noted.

You're doing God's work being a teacher. You're better than a nerd.
You are very kind. The hardest thing to accept, especially in a town like Albany where you run into people all the time from your past, is when you run into a former student and they instantly recognize you as their former teacher and you fumble around like a senile old fool to place them. Embarrassing. But they seem to understand. I had a student who played on my tennis team. He wasn't very good but I had him playing as a boost to his self esteem which was and remains important to special education students. His name was Iroy and he used to tease me saying that he was going to own a nursing home and put hot sauce in the cup holding my false teeth. Anyway, he did end up owning a small trucking firm in partnership with two brothers and became a rather successful businessman. Not bad for someone who struggled daily with Algebra I as a high school senior.

You mean there’s a life for non-math types? 🤯

I was a good swimmer back then, WSI
( lifeguard ). My other two classes were something like English Composition and Calculus. I got a C in writing and an F in Calculus. Started my Tech journey on warning/probation after1 quarter. :banghead:
man, I waited til spring quarter of freshman year to go on warning. the bad part of it was I had to hear about it all summer from my folks.

my last quarter was drownproofing and thermo. both graduation requirements with complete irrelevance to my degree.
