But they’re not getting paid by the universities to play football. They are getting paid by some fan club for use of their name image and likeness. They are still amateur football players. So why can’t the ncaa make rules about the amateur football league?

Because any rule that limits the players from transferring would be viewed as preventing the players from making money through NIL deals and therefore is prohibited

Contracts with whom? You honestly believe the universities would offer and the players would accept a non-compete contract that prohibits them from ever transferring to another school? Even if they did have contracts, it works both ways. You are forcing the schools to keep the players even if they do not want them. I also doubt it would pass a legal challenge once someone sues saying the contract is preventing him from transferring to a school better suited to his needs.

Schools are not for profit sports teams. All the sports leagurs also have some antitrust exemption. Again, how can you have a contract that limits what school a person can attend? You cannot. Another problem is that players are not exactly employees of the university, but rather this quasi student/employee. The employment non compete contract fails because academics are still involved. They would have to be full time employees with no other status with the university to make that contract work.

Also, since the players are getting their money from third parties outside the school, any contract that limits the players ability to make money from third parties woulld be illegal.

This is out of the NCAA and the schools' control until they are granted some exemption to limit transfers.

You are stilling getting the 12. the game it's in in the spring and it's a guaranteed home game in a warm weather when fans have Jack all to do.

Even if their status changes, how would a non compete work with coaches getting fired or players failing out of school. The change in status is only part of this equation that needs to change. The Athletic Departments may also have to separate themselves from the universities. At that point, the players are no longer student athletes, but rather just employees of a for profit semi professional league with limited ties to the school for branding and marketing purposes.

This isn’t to anyone in particular. But I find it amusing that Georgia Tech engineers are asking Georgia Tech students to make decisions based off emotions rather than concrete logic/numbers.

You’d tell your son to stay at GT because he loves his teacher and classmates? When he believes his 10-year earning potential triples by transferring to Ole Miss? I love my alma mater and would love for my kids to share that with me. But I wasn’t trained to think emotionally when it comes to earning potential.

Most US sports leagues have CBAs because the courts have decided to allow it without a specific antitrust exemption. Eg minor league baseball made a CBA recently without legal change.

Some of these kids will make more from NIL because they will not get to the NFL or NBA. It's a money grab while they can get it. College education is not part of their decision in most cases. They may also see no real difference as long as they get a degree from somewhere.

It's changing the game for sure. Not sure it's killing it. That remains to be seen. It may be killing it for most die hard fans of non-factory schools not able/willing to join the arms race or pretty much anyone over 35.

That was the discussion when it happened about 20 years ago. AAs needed the 12th game, or so they said. So you'd have to ask them.

Right now, this sport is as clean as ever.

Except that conferences interfere with games to make sure their teams have a chair when the music stops.

The Wild West is much preferred over the previous system. You guys were just brainwashed by the previous overseers of the sport who created a totally fake sport for the last 60 years and simply can’t admit it. The bowl system and the NCAA were the most corrupt part of any American sport in history and is on par with the corruption of the IOC and FIFA.

What we have today is so much better and I hope we never have another dictator in charge of college football. Right now, this sport is as clean as ever. Players, coaches, and fans are all free to do what they want without penalty. The days of some teams buying players while a GT type team gets put on probation are over. The only question today in college football is how much do you want to spend. That is as pure as you can get. No different than what we all do everyday on every purchasing decision. The days of exploiting a player and having coaches lie and hold them hostage for years are over.

There’s a reason why the NFL doesn’t use this model. Parity is actually a good thing. Rich programs buying championships is not my bag.
