Remember where Virginia was before Bennett? FSU before Hamilton?
You just have to make a good hire. Money makes the world go round, give someone ACC money and you'll get an ACC coach
And what has our administration done to make you think they would even be willing to spend ACC money? We went cheap with gregory. If we weren't cheap we'd have fired him this past year. You could easily argue that Hewitt's contract was due to cheapness in wanting to pay reduced money and offering contract security instead. When have we ever opened the purse for the basketball program to hire a coach?
Our program is also in a terrible place that will likely force us to overpay to attract an ACC level coach. We'll have minimal ACC level talent, no recruiting momentum, and apathetic at best fanbase, and possibly hostile. On top of that we'll have an administration that choose to keep a dead man walking as coach with an AD who flat out said he was considering firing him and even went so far as to claim that offense has been treated just as something to do between defensive possessions. That's embarrassing and does not paint a good picture about our administration to quality coaches.
We'll almost certainly be hiring another 'who?' coach next time around, unless we decide to go with and get Noodles or Price neither of whom will likely qualify as a big hire. About the only glimmer of hope we realistically have going forward is Bobinski has a good track record of finding good coaches who are under the radar. His hires were Matta, Miller, and Mack. Mack and Miller were first time head coaches and Matta had one year of experience. So there really is nothing pointing to making a big hire when gregory goes. Hell, I'd say it's more likely we fluke our way into the NIT and give him another stupid extension than making a big hire.
