Thats not a wet blanket statement.

We made the commitment to get out of this hole without more digging.

Go big or go home. Itll be a rough 21 months but we will be able to make the impact hire afterwards

So, why not extend him to 2019 so that his contract ends on the same year as 900K payouts to Hewitt end?

Because he doesn't deserve it?

I honestly don't know.

Because the idea that we will go big when Gregory gets fired/not brought back is a pipe dream. By the time we're looking for a new coach, we'll be in a position that basically screams for any coach worth a dime to run the other way.

Remember where Virginia was before Bennett? FSU before Hamilton?

You just have to make a good hire. Money makes the world go round, give someone ACC money and you'll get an ACC coach

Assuming BG doesn't turn it around (a reasonable assumption), the next hire will be a hungry up & comer likely to cost, at most, $1.5MM -$1.75MM, after Hewitt's payoff is done or someone funds it.

1.7 brought Bennett to UVA iirc.

We should be offering more than that.

we probably will in 10 years when everyone else is paying $3M
Can't be gun shy to pay just because the Hewitt contract blew up the program

Yeah, I guess it's just a matter of when we can afford it with .9mil/yr thru 19 to PHew

You just have to make a good hire. Money makes the world go round, give someone ACC money and you'll get an ACC coach

And what has our administration done to make you think they would even be willing to spend ACC money? We went cheap with gregory. If we weren't cheap we'd have fired him this past year. You could easily argue that Hewitt's contract was due to cheapness in wanting to pay reduced money and offering contract security instead. When have we ever opened the purse for the basketball program to hire a coach?

Our program is also in a terrible place that will likely force us to overpay to attract an ACC level coach. We'll have minimal ACC level talent, no recruiting momentum, and apathetic at best fanbase, and possibly hostile. On top of that we'll have an administration that choose to keep a dead man walking as coach with an AD who flat out said he was considering firing him and even went so far as to claim that offense has been treated just as something to do between defensive possessions. That's embarrassing and does not paint a good picture about our administration to quality coaches.

We'll almost certainly be hiring another 'who?' coach next time around, unless we decide to go with and get Noodles or Price neither of whom will likely qualify as a big hire. About the only glimmer of hope we realistically have going forward is Bobinski has a good track record of finding good coaches who are under the radar. His hires were Matta, Miller, and Mack. Mack and Miller were first time head coaches and Matta had one year of experience. So there really is nothing pointing to making a big hire when gregory goes. Hell, I'd say it's more likely we fluke our way into the NIT and give him another stupid extension than making a big hire.

I think Pea is right here. We have to let the buyouts go down before we can make a move.
MBob had $2-2.2M lined up for the buyouts - he needed 6 to pay off both.
The fact the AD wanted to get rid of the buyouts before pursuing a new coach suggests he had a money target in mind and it wasn't little. I doubt it was huge either, but you don't need huge.
I'm thinking he was thinking in the $2M year range plus or minus 10%. VT got Williams at $2.2 and their program was not in a good place either. It's about finding a good coach that thinks he can win at your school.

ACC is really looking like a powerhouse in basketball. More kids want to play in it then anywhere else.
GT may be in the crapper but it has some history and good placement from a recruiting standpoint.

We are still in purgatory due to past financial mistakes and will likely be so for about 24 more months.

As long as we are able to pay a respectable salary we will be ok.
