I was at that game. Hot as Hades it was. A huge mismatch. One thing about playing Tech in that era was if you were a big underdog, you simply could not make any mistakes like getting a punt blocked and passes intercepted which both happened in that game because Tech would be all over you like a swarm of yellow jackets in a heart beat. It was a pretty sad spectacle. A second team linebacker whose name I forget actually intercepted a pass deep in Tech territory and outran their entire team to the goal line. Sad to see.

Anthony Allen. A cheerleader who happened to be a Sunday school student for me in church, remarked how smart he was in math. High praise given she graduated cum laude and was an A student in high school. He transferred to Tech from Louisville and for one memorable year was at A back while Bey Bey was at wide receiver. Imagine big Anthony Allen at 230 coming around with Big Bey Bey blocking for him. Borderline illegal.

Which bowl was it where we mauled a G5 type team under Gailey? Tulsa?

I need to rewatch that, because the main thing I remember is our defense hitting their QB over and over and over.

Yes. It was the 2004 "Boise (Humanitarian) Bowl" on the blue fake grass in the freeze. That was the game wide P. J. Daniels set the NCAA record for rushing in a bowl game—311 yards. He tore them up one side and down the other. Tech won 52 - 10, largely because they couldn't tackle P. J. Great game.

More like they got tired of trying to tackle him and gave up. I was shocked at how timid their tacklers became in the 4th quarter.

I rewatched the Tech/Tulsa Blue Turf Massacre. That was a wonderful game. It was actually pretty tight at halftime at 10-3. Then, in the second half, we stopped trying to throw the ball, and just started handing it to PJ. The OL was bocking great. Tulsa got tired of tackling PJ quickly in the second half, and he was gashing them for 20, 30-yard runs. He was having a blast.

And our defense forced 5 fumbles, and held Tulsa to negative rushing yards. They sacked the QB countless times.

It was one of the worst physical beatings Chan/Tenuta ever put on another team. I actually felt somewhat sorry for Tulsa.

Watched a couple of 2009 games. Derrick Morgan was a stud! If we just had one like him. Did he make the pros?

The Boise bowl was fun but the 2004 team also destroyed and dropped 50 on Syracuse. Fun, but also a bit of “what could have been” for 04/05 - those teams had a high ceiling but never quite did it consistently.

The 2004 and 05 teams blew several winnable games. Still, they led up to 2006, which was a good season, but still blew several winnable games. That was the Chan Gailey legacy: never a losing season, never a great season, never beat UGA.

That’s it in a nutshell. Still marvel at how CPJ in his first season was able to accomplish several things that Gailey never did. I didn’t dislike Gailey but I swear his teams never won the big games or the games I really wanted to win. So frustrating watching his teams. Still can’t figure out how we lost to Wake Forest.

Tech lost to Wake Forest because Gailey punted late on fourth and inches around midfield with an obviously worn-out defense on the bench. He made a pro coaching decision in college.
