Question About Tobias Oliver

Tobias is, by the most recent reports, 6'2" and 210 lbs. He may be the most talented runner on the team. His natural position, if you aren't going to play him at QB, is at RB. His talent is wasted at WR; he won't touch the ball enough to make a difference. Soooooo … either keep him at QB and develop his talents there or move him to RB and see who he can beat out there.

But nooooooo! If we can't decide to let Howard touch the ball, then it's a lead pipe cinch that Tobias won't get the chance either. Anyone who keeps up with who got recruited by who will be able to get the picture on this without my two cents worth.

So keep him at WR, by all means. And waste his talent. You'd have to really be able to think outside the box to put it to use.

This isn’t really a proven fact though. We have so many RBs it’s hard to say that. What do you want ? Sit Mason, Howard ? Who gets moved ? The problem of too much talent is nice but this is what it looks like.

It’s also how the “factories” build their programs. “next up” starts like this. Hopefully at some point you can say what you e said about TO, at each position. It would be nice to say why isn’t so and so playing, it’s a waste of talent.

He is one of the best overall athletes on the field and has the position flexibility to play anywhere on the field. But to quote a common colloquialism, he is a "jack-of-all-trades but a master of none". He is good at so many positions but at each position group there is a limiting skill that keeps him from being great that specific position. As a QB he is limited by his passing ability. As a running back he is limited by his power. As a receiver he is limited by his route running ability. As a return specialist he is limited by his open field vision and top end speed. It is tough cause I like him and want him to succeed but it is going to be difficult for someone to find a place where he fits in any system at the next level. I think his best shot is at receiver as his shortcomings are mostly teachable but he has A LOT of work to do to be able to compete against other NFL level receivers.

They need to figure out how to utilize his skill set and get him involved in multiple ways. It’s a good thing we have coaches who are player based and not scheme based.

He's from my town, he just has a flat affect all the time. He's not up or down with his emotions - unfortunately people who don't know that about him read too much into what they see on TV

That's not what I would describe as flat. Whatever you say my man. He also has tweeted questionable things directly before practice, really seems to vibe with the "bad body language". You don't have to be emotional, but I'd like to see more engagement in games from him. I remember a few situations where he's sitting on the bench while we were on offense.

Not sure what point you are making here (or in general, for that matter, other than your general disdain for CPJ or anyone associated with him, which is already clear). Should he volunteer to be part of the juice crew or something?

I get it, I do. But it's also totally fair that he throws a worse football than Tony Siragusa and didn't deserve more playing time over the other guys. I'd probably think different about it if he was getting screwed over (he's not being screwed over) like other good players that didn't play as much as they should have in years past.

Ummm. Typically when you're part of the unit on the field and a player that could be expected to be used in the game, you stand directly next to the coaches responsible for putting you in the game...not pouting on the bench because "I'm not getting the playing time I think I deserve."

Regardless of your self-proclaimed superior knowledge of football and the program, there are others here who do personally know Tobias and your continual criticism based on your 'perception' is really getting old. And to be clear, on this topic, you are completely wrong.

Last year was a bit of a lost year for Tobias as he had to spend a bunch of time working at QB to be able to start week 1 vs Clemson. Now that he’ll have a full offseason to learn WR/flex without having to split time in the QB room he should be able to dive fully into the position and should be a lot more effective.

Idk, maybe they should make that point and be clear about it. I don't believe I was bashing him. Saying that a pro player has better body language is not bashing him. Telling the truth about how poor his football throwing skills are is not bashing him, particularly in a thread where he's the subject. Saying that the other guys are more deserving of time is not bashing him. You act as if I'm in other threads throwing him under the bus.

I will never be sold on his throwing skills until he shows otherwise. I do believe he's a helluva person, I have heard as much. I just don't like the vibe he carries himself with (and that's perfectly understandable like I said above). Sorry, just how I see it, I'm not wrong to see it that way.

If they actually know Tobias, perhaps they should pass on the message to him. 'Cause if I can see it, better believe the coaches see it. We don't need players that aren't fully bought in around our program, don't care how good or bad they are.

Maybe that's something he can work on in the offseason, both his body language and whatever his new position is.

I've thought about how TO is a WR but with all the talent coming in and returning at the reciver position should CGC start using him like a Taysum Hill?

Hill is a 220lb machine that can throw the ball 60 yds.Few are like him.TO is maybe a 190 with a questionable arm and worse a questionable O line.I think TO could have a couple of specific plays/uses but hoping for much more like Hill may be somewhat hopeful esp since our "real" QBs have good running ability.
