Question about our fan base

The other thing for me is if they come to BD stadium in the masses, I think we owe it to them to get some butts in their stadium. They aren't afraid to come into BD, and tech fans shouldn't be afraid of going to Sanford stadium. I'm sorry but that's all it sounds like from some of y'all, scared. You show up there if for nothing else, then to support the football team like they(uga) get every place they go.

Being a UGA alum Athens and Sanford doesn't scare me I just don't always enjoy being the only tech fan around. That may change that I'm no longer a student

You probably don't have a good reason for going into southern LA (no where near as good as supporting tech against the mutts), you're also probably not going to be subject to gang shooting on the uga campus. I'm sorry you took offense to me calling it like I see it. Go support your team like your rival gets if you're not scared, you don't have to take your family with you for the one game if you're so worried about them...

However, our more diverse student base seems less interested in GT football than my student days.

I went this past year to support the team and there were just as many UGA fans as Tech fans in the GT sections.

Every individual has their reasons to go or not go, but it's sad how collectively, we as a fanbase don't have the balls to support our team in the biggest game of the year.

No matter what anyone says when you show up to games it makes a difference. For every fan we have at an away game takes a voice away for the other team. We need to make sure we can be loud and support our guys at the away games no matter what. The players notice that stuff and recruits notice when we are supporting our team. I do understand why some ppl don't like going but imo if you are cautious you can avoid a lot of the junk happening to you.

I've been to every Tech vs. UGA games since 1999 and the only incident that turned out bad was actually in Atlanta. There no reason to avoid going up there. Their fans are vocal and many are downright rude and idiotic, but it's not like they're assaulting away fans left and right just for being in town. It's not dangerous to go to the games up there. We could really use the fan support.

There's a few reasons:

One, the visitors' section was in a much different (and more noticeable) place back then. Now we basically get a small corner (really for the band) and they stick us in the 600 level (which didn't even exist in the 1980s). I think that does a few things - one, it convinces people not to come because the view on TV is much better and two, it probably makes it seem, optically, that there are less GT fans than there really are. Also, the stadium wasn't as big so the proportion of GT fans would seem bigger. If it was 1980, Sanford was only 59k people (or a big expansion to 82k in 1981).

Two, we had more fans back then. Even though we hadn't been good recently, uga hadn't been on the 15 year dominance it has been on today. Pretty much all sidewalk fans these days are going to uga. We had beaten uga 3 times from 1970-1980, which was the worst we had done in a decade to that point. We also trailed the series only 39-31-5 at that point. The programs were just on a much different level, and "SEC dominance" had not yet asserted itself. It wasn't until the 80s and 90s, and then with the Richt hire, that uga really positioned itself to be the "flagship" football school in the state.

Three, as someone else said, technology is different. No HD. Watching a game is a lot different now than it used to be.

Four, related to two, because uga has been good recently its also a lot harder to get a ticket and lodging in athens. It was much easier in the 90s when they weren't that good. Now everyone and their sister flock to uga on saturdays.

Long story short, the programs are just much different now than they were in 80.

Having gone to just about every game in the series except two(those were in Athens, Hell)since 1966, I would not care to leave the television broadcast if not for my son.

Over the years, we have had popcorn, beer, puke, spit and whatever else they could find to douse my party with. Some mean, nasty incidents that I have witnessed and or jumped in to defend GT people on. It really is not worth the torment. Even this year a Mutt fan who witnessed us getting concession products tossed all over our clothes, hair, said let me see you guys get out alive after the game ended. We celebrated with the Tech band, until their escort back to the bus secured them. After making the long walk to the car, only the side mirror was slashed. No, I stopped putting any GT insignia on the car or inside, years ago(because of this behavior at certain road games). I do have Gwinnett on my tag by law, however plenty of Bulldawgs live in this county too. Must have seen us get out of the vehicle with GT clothing on.

I think people confuse scared with just not wanting to deal with it. If the atmosphere of the game is not pleasant for some fans then expecting them to spend a lot of money to sit in some of the worst seats in the place and not even enjoy themselves is a bit foolish. I also enjoy spending time in areas around the stadium when I go to away games. Wearing Tech gear around downtown Athens after the game is probably more unpleasant than going to the game itself. It just isn't a fun away game experience overall. I want to support my team but I have my limits.

I haven't been to a game there since 2008. There are several reasons:
• The traffic going and coming is absolutely awful.
• There is no place to park; you end up literally miles from the stadium and I'm getting too old for the walk.
• The tickets are horrendously expensive.
• The seating is - shall we say? - variable. I only went in 2008 because we (my son and I) got lower deck seats with our backs to the wall. That saved a lot of trouble.
Oth, I never had any real trouble with the Dwags themselves. We were careful to always say that the game was a tossup (true) and every time we scored we told everybody around us that we expected the Dwags to come back (they did). The guy next to me offered to bet me $100 that Ugag would win the game when we went up three late. My response: "You must think I'm nuts! Bet against Georgia at Sanford Stadium!?!" This - again true, btw – went over well. They congratulated us on winning after the game was over.

I didn't see you take your shirt off and make a tourniquet out of it, then challenge the hecklers around her that smelled blood. Read the Auburn story from their visit last year. Your life is worth more than a game.

The "scared" quote was in reference to another poster who made the comment about Tech fans who refuse to go to the cesspool being scared! Not all dwag fans are terrible, but the vast majority of them are not the most pleasant to be around.

I'm 6'3, 260 lbs. I've trained Krav Maga for the last 6 yrs. I am scared of nothing but clowns (don't ask) and snakes. It's still not always worth the trouble to make oneself a target for drunken redneckery as rampant is as on display at sanford n son.

This should be true whether one is "packing" or has a decade plus of martial arts training.

With that said, there is a difference - as has been pointed out - between being to "scared" to do something verses being willing to put up with discomfort and the like.

When I visit somewhere or when others visit BDS@HGF it's to be expected to take/give some ribbing, that's just part of the "fun". Unfortunately, a few bad apples really screw it up for the 90+% that want to enjoy the experience.
