The best Kicker/Punter from the time I can remember watching college football was Sebastion Janikowski. Till this day he's the only kicker or punter I can remember leaving early for the NFL (1st round pick). He was also a 2 time Lou Groza award winner and widely considered one of the best all around kickers to ever play college football.

Durant Brooks is still the best punter I can remember playing for GT. He came in 3rd as a JR, and won the Ray Guy award his senior season. He was drafted in the 6th round.

That kinda sets the bar at what Harvin is looking at if he wants to make the NFL.

You just described Ray Guy. He consistently kicked it higher than longer, and returners took their lives in their hands trying to run one back because they were surrounded by defenders, yet he got enough distance to at times flip the field. Beautiful kicker. If you like kickers.

Last year Wells had almost the same number of kicks than another kicker who made all conference. And he didn’t miss ever. It happens. You should have more than a handful of punts, But the limits they set are arbitrary. It’s inconsistent because you can look at various kickers and they’re not ranked in numerical/statistical order. IIWII

He's number 19 in avg. yards per punt at 44.3 YPP, number 6 in total punt yards, and number 4 in total punts. Considering you have to punt some short ones on purpose to pin people inside the 20, 44.3 is a good average. He has had a few misses, but I think it's fewer than most realize. The reason the punt game doesn't look great this year is because we are allowing too many return yards. We are also allowing teams to return too many punts, i.e. coverage not getting down field fast enough. We are number 4 in total punts at 63, but we have also had 26 punts returned. Out of the top 10 with most punts, 7 of those 10 have less than 20 of them returned. 6 of 10 had less than 15 of them returned. We are also number 2 in punt return yards allowed, and that is killing his net stat.

Yeah, net yards per punt includes variables having nothing to do with the punter. Some do, some don't. The reason why our net is low has little to do with Harvin. The NFL is not going to hold a team's lack of coverage against the punter.

Harvin is built somewhat like Janokowski. Both are in the Lou Groza look-alike category.

It's not my intent to open up the coach vs. coach or for Mad fans, Spy vs. Spy thing, again, but it occurred to me that the coach who thought punting was unAmerican and placekicking was for sissies, who considered 3rd and 8 laughable (What, me pass? and who supposedly could not recruit, landed Butker and Harvin. One is in the NFL and one has a running start. Apparently they didn't get the memo.

And yep, the skeptics, not me, are right: for some reason few colleges throw a scholarship at a kicker, and for the same reason the NFL waits to pick up the leavings.

There’s just so much here. But I’ll bite since you brought up Paul Johnson for absolutely NO reason and then tried to rationalize it like it wasn’t your intention to do exactly that lmao. But in this game you’re playing I would play along and say that one good kicker and a good punter in a gd decade isn’t something you should be thumping your chest about.

Wow. Which toy was it I broke? And I really, really wish people would stop ascribing to others the motive they would have in the same circumstance. We aren't all like that, you know.

Yeah I was replying to the guy who said Harvin's been inconsistent. I was pointing out stats that may make it look like Harvin isn't doing good, when in fact he's doing pretty good for as much as he's having to punt.

Sure, he figured out specialists are important and he went out and got 2 of the best he could get. Credit is due for that. But even you say in your next sentence that few colleges offer specialists a full ride, so it's not that huge of an accomplishment to secure one when you are offering a scholarship and all the other schools are offering a preferred walk-on. But I will grant it was a smart move that paid dividends, and in the case of Butker, won some games.

We are allowing too many returns partly because, unlike last year, he is making too many returnable punts.
