Years ago, I told myself that I would stop following college sports if they started paying players. I believed that paying them would result in college sports developing all the worst aspects of professional sports without any of the rules to maintain competitive balance (draft, salary cap, etc.,). Well, it is even worse than i thought, because the NCAA is not enforcing the tampering rules and players can move about without having to sit a year. I can see ending my relationship with GT sports in a few years if this keeps up and that saddens me immensely. I just have no desire in supporting a semi professional sports team in a league with no rules or ethics.

It does pull some fun out of it. The dudes might not bleed/piss gold like they used to. But at the end of the day, the graduates deserve the same respect of any tech man.

No matter what suspected ulterior motive, all tech grads bust their *** in the classroom the same way you did.
Whether they had their entire tenure at tech, or transferred in, they chose the harder route at Tech.

I agree... if he’s ineligible here, he is ineligible. Or should be. But those “fluff classes” elsewhere might actually look like “progress” depending on the degree hes chasing at the next stop. My overall opinion; if we can’t keep a kid eligible and he can magically become eligible elsewhere, we’re doing it wrong. I don’t think that’s the reason he’s in the portal and that’s kinda the point I was trying to make by asking the question.

I hope this is just speculation and unless it is absolutely a known fact, it is unfair to even suggest that is the sole reason. He could be leaving for lots of different reasons. Domineck was a good player and he left for a change to a major GT doesn't offer. NIL is the 400 lb gorilla now in the room along with an extra COVID year and the transfer portal. I hope he finds what he is looking for. I appreciate the effort he put in while he was here.

I have struggled with the same issue the last few years. I think the reason CPJ liked coaching at Navy and at Tech had to do with those standards you alluded to. I think the reason he left coaching was the futility and distasteful aspects of playing semi-pro teams with no ethical principles. Athens comes to mind even as their fan base expands exponentially with each national championship.

That depends on your perspective. To my mind, that means Tech is doing it right, and that's one reason I've stuck with the Jackets through thick and thin through the years.
I know it's an outlier viewpoint among college football fans in general but taking the high road by continuing to treat players as student/athletes gives me pride in my sidewalk fandom, win or lose.

a guy entering the portal now after clearly being a big part of the future plans makes it really hard to suspect it being anything other than shopping around for an NIL deal.

and to be quite honest more players should probably do the same. these guys get a chance to make more money playing a game than they ever will as an actual engineer. i would definitely want to know what’s out there too

Of course, you are correct. How many Saturdays do you think we line up across from a “like minded” institution? It’s just really frustrating to play with such a handicap and with the ease of transfer, having actual classroom standards becomes an even bigger hurdle for player retention. I certainly take pride in doing things the right way, but I will take a lot more pride in it when we’re competitive again. ;)

Yeah, it's frustrating. I (and most Tech fans, I believe) would prefer college football changed to fit the Tech model that the other way around. But as we both know, that is highly unlikely.

Old story that I’ve told in the past. My parents were uga fans. Me and my five brothers all went to Emory. Emory has in its founding charter that they will not play football or certain other big time varsity sports. This was because Emory saw the influence of money as potentially corrupting to their academic standards. My brothers and I became Tech fans, in part, because Tech seemed to be able to play big time sports and maintain high academic standards. There literally would be no reason otherwise for me to follow and root for Tech.

I cannot like this post enough. It's a major reason why I am a fan of Tech, having never gone there myself.
