Could always be a former coordinator that’s an analyst for a playoff team, but being a western and northern teams, may not have connections. Of course he could be on the staff.

That would make sense for a delayed hire. Buster Faulkner was on uga staff and we hired him before the NCG.

I think CBK if wanting to make the best possible hire that fits Georgia Tech. I don't think ge is taking this hire lightly.

There is no need to rush this. The portal is basically closed. Take the time to find the right person that fits with this program and its coaches and goals.

So those options would be:

Alabama - Charlie Strong - not sure what to make of a total retread, he's been passed over for so many jobs at this point
Texas - Payam Saadat - may not have enough experience, was co-DC at Army but otherwise most experience is at FCS level
Michigan - Rick Minter - not a good fit, old, was HC for Cincinnati back in the 90s, last meaningful experience was DL coach for Ga State back in 2016
Michigan - Doug Mallory - maybe the best fit, co-DC for LSU and Indiana and DC for New Mexico, coached DBs for the 2016 Falcons NFC Championship team, but also unlikely to leave a cushy job at alma mater to go back to the grind

If we hired Charlie Strong, we would need to make sure Johnny's Hideaway and all the buckhead bars will refuse to serve him

McCollum would be great, he just finished his first year as HC at Sewanee. We don't have an on-field coach that is listed as the Recruiting Coordinator, so it may make sense for him. I was thinking that he would want a DC-level job, but he has been mostly a position coach / recruiting coordinator in his career. With him, it would probably come down to (1) how he feels about how he was treated here, and whether it was a GT issue or a Collins issue, and (2) how his vision of recruiting lines up with how Key is running the program.
