Eh, their schedule was so weak….i’m honestly not that impressed

FEI metrics takes into account the strength/weakness of an opponent (among other important factors). That's why FEI it's often used for comparison as opposed to other metrics. From BCF Toys website:

FEI Ratings (FEI), Offense Ratings (OFEI), Defense Ratings (DFEI), and Special Teams Ratings (SFEI) are opponent-adjusted possession efficiency data representing the scoring advantage per non-garbage possession a team or unit would expect to have on a neutral field against an average opponent. Strength of schedule ratings represent the number of losses a team two standard deviations above average would expect to have against the schedule of opponents (ELS), the number of losses a team one standard deviation above average would expect to have against the schedule (GLS), and the number of losses an average team would expect to have against the schedule (ALS). Strength of record ratings (EWD, GWD, AWD) are the difference between a team's schedule strength ratings and its actual losses.

Seriously, we did well at TE. Colin Peek was our #4 receiver at TE in 2007 and transferred to Bama when Johnson showed up.

The TE problem is that we were loaded at receiver. Matthews and Cooper were there before. JP Foschi before that.

Our issue wasn’t lack of talent on offense (except maybe QB), but recruiting restrictions impacting OL numbers
We did have talent at TE, we just didn’t use it well.

There are a lot more examples of it, but the BC game stood out because Tenuta never changed anything in that game, despite the fact that it was clear to everyone watching that blitzing the fool out of Ryan wasn't going to rattle him and the blitzes weren't going to get to him in time. It was the final straw for many folks in the fan base - especially the big donors.

I agree that his defense was always a wild card - it was brilliant when it worked, but was dreadful when it didn't. There are games where it was a masterclass on zone blitzing...but those offenses are long gone now and pretty much every team has a mobile QB with some element of RPO and Read Option - both of which are killers for aggressive zone blitz schemes. I enjoyed having Tenuta here, but I'd pass on bringing him back.
I agree that he shouldn’t come back, but I loved the guy, his attitude and aggressiveness and his defenses when he was here

Methinks you misremember. On the whole, Gailey's problem was his offense, not Tenuta's defense.

True the main problem were the terrible offensive coordinators and Reggie's inconsistent play. Seems the offensive line was kind of mediocre as well My point was that Coach Tenuta's defense was the strong point of the team but there were times when the high risk high reward did not pay off. Posters point to the infamous Boston College game but there were others as well here and there. As noted below in games lost where the defense was more or less shredded. It happens but as you pointed out it was mostly a sputtering offense.

2002 UGA 51
2003 Clemson 39 Duke 41 UGA 34
2004 UNC 34 Miami 27 Virginia Tech 34
2005 Virginia Tech 51
2006 Clemson 31
2007 UGA 31

There were also a few games we managed to win, like Clem in 2004.

I honestly didn't remember the 2005 team getting run out the door as bad as 51-7 so I looked it up and man it was a disaster. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/boxscores/2005-09-24-virginia-tech.html

VT had 320 yards of total offense. GT had 217. So far so typical for Gaileyball. But 51 seems weird.

3 GT turnovers. Ok, that doesn't help.

Marcus Vick only threw 18 times but was 13-18 for 223 with a TD, very efficient. NOT the D's best day.

And then the cherry on top:
* missed GT FG returned for VT TD in 1Q
* pick six with 1:55 left in 3Q
* pick six with 1:29 left in 3Q - and this is the point where my repressed memory woke up a little.

GT was ranked #15 coming in, VT #4.

Followed by the disastrous Thursday night NCST game where the winning TD bounced off Calvin's hands and got picked off in the endzone in the final minute. Between that and another UGA heartbreaker, plus a @Charlottesville mess after climbing back into the 25, real big set of missed opportunities to have a special season.

At least we have the Miami and Auburn games!

That NCSU loss was brutal. We had two 90+ yard drives late, IIRC, and blew it on the deflection in the EZ by Megatron at the last minute.

Oh I forgot about the meningitis. But he’s in the box score, I think he just missed the game before. It would explain some of the struggles for sure.
