Not just talking about any one game, but the refs this tournament have just been god awful. For how important these games are the NCAA has to make sure there is a higher level of reffing. But for years refs are basically protected from any kind of public attempt to hold them accountable for when they mess up.

I was in Vegas the last couple days. Had Duke, Arkansas and Houston, all getting points. Thought Tx Tech would slow it down so took the under and lost. Hope tomorrow turns out as nicely. (Miami, UNC and St Peters and the over in UNC -UCLA). Put $100 on St Peter’s to win the East. $15k payout if they do pull it off.

I thought he stayed pretty much within the realm of the verticality rule. No?
Or, was it technically cold because he was within the circle under the basket?
He was within the circle. I hate the rule, but it's been called like that all year. That doesn't change the facts about the dismal state of college officiating.

The official on the broadcast said it was not a foul. No idea who's right.

Just checking the war zone recently referred to as our brackets. I think I will win if Duke previals. Too many of you had faith in the Zags.
That was always the case with the way traditional pool scoring works. The first several rounds don’t mean anything except serve as tie breakers when multiple people select the same champion correctly (or in the case that no one selects the champ correctly, which has as much of a chance this year as any). If one is fortunate to be the only person with a champ (Duke), then basically all your eggs are in that basket, good or bad.

Part of the restricted area rule is that if you jump and go completely vertical, it's not a foul. Problem is, as soon as you have contact, your arms naturally start to come down from vertical. (unless you have abs of steel!) Thus, it puts the officials in a miserable no-win call. Did he go vertical and his arms came down because the offensive player initiated contact? Charge / no call. Or did he bring his arms down from vertical to try to block / alter the shot? Defensive foul.

I've seen this one called both ways all year and it's infuriating. It's an impossible call for the refs to make and it changes the course of many close games. Would Gonzaga have won if Holmgren doesn't foul out on that call? I doubt it, but it would have been possible. I think he would've fouled out in the next two or three possessions. He's been foul prone all year and had no way to keep up with the Hogs flying around him.

IMO, Gonzaga's demise last night was not Holmgren's fifth, it was their guards shooting 8-30. They were atrocious and that left Timme as the only viable scoring option. Arkansas exposed them, the same way Baylor eviscerated them last year.

The circle is for block/charges. That has nothing to do with he was straight up, never slapped down, or did any other motion to commit a foul. He's allowed to go straight up and try to block a shot at the rim. At least 3 of his fouls were total garbage.

Pastner may be loyal to his assistant coaches to a fault. He needs a really top PG coach who is also a dynamite recruiter. So far his staff hasn't been getting it done. Time to make a change or they all pay the price. It takes time to cultivate relationships with recruits. Next year is too late for 2024 unless he is going transfer portal and that is really risky with the extra COVID year going away.
I agree with this. I think the guard coaching could be better and recruiting definitely has to get better.

Well my bracket went all to hell last night. Missed on all 4 games.
On the positive side I can root hard for all the teams I want to win and not worry about my bracket.
For me today my rooting interests will be St. Peter's, Providence, UNC And Miami,
Go ACC, lets get more money for the conference.

I think it's interesting how we view games. And calls within the games. Most people had Gonzaga in their bracket and see that foul call as bad. They have a good argument for that POV. I don't particularly like Gonzaga, so I was pulling for Arkansas, the home state of my college sweetheart. It was a close call that @mstranahan described perfectly above. I think we all agree that the officiating last night was terrible. The Arkansas player with his foot out of bounds was not called when the ref was <20 feet away and staring at the play. There's a long list of missed calls in this tournament that changed the trajectory of close games.

I had Zona over Gonzaga in my bracket, but it didn't stop me from rooting for and loving the Arkansas and Houston outcomes. No money at stake for me this year made it easy. As a former defensive specialist and 6th option on offense (tic), I tend to gravitate to teams that play hard, aggressive defense and get into the opponent's head, which is exactly what the Hogs and Cougars did. My feelings are especially true when they encounter highly touted teams with "sexier" names/offenses/players. I was rooting for Texas Tech for that same reason, but 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

It'd be great to get some more $$$ in the ACC coffers with wins today. Best part is that doesn't conflict with continuing to root for St Peter's.
