Nc State Postgame

I’m on the west coast this week. The crowd looked good and lively on ESPN.

From watching the Duke game, NCST was really good at setting the edge and containing the run. They were again last night. We could have done a lot more damage in the passing game. They sold out against the run every time King came in. They have a really aggressive DC who did some fun things.

We had a lot of trouble tackling. We had a couple of opportunities to stop NCST short of a TD or first down, and let that slip, which kept us on the field. There were a couple of times where we almost had a sack or TFL go for an explosive play instead.

Overall, I’ll enjoy the win for the rest of the week. I’d can pick at problems later.

And 70% of it wasn't even about the game. 40% was just regurgitated,nonsensical observations they already made in pregame.

They said, “Philo’s running the whole package” ad nauseum. We all saw he was running the ball. It’s called profoundly stating the obvious.

Calvin is the answer to everything. Seriously though, even someone like Darren Waller. Someone that we can throw a fade to in the end zone.

Getto watch the replay this morning, question is why did they keep adding 1 second to the clock twice?

3 times! Think it was 16 to 17 after the kickoff, 9 to 10 after the first pass, and 5 to 6 before the FG.

I get that it's infeasible to review the clock after every play to make sure it's exactly accurate, but always found it a bit silly how seconds are gained/lost willy nilly for 58 minutes of gametime with the clock operator starting a little late or letting it run a little extra, but for 2 minutes of gametime everyone has their microscopes out making sure it's accurate to the nanosecond. Same thing happens in basketball, but even more egregious.

ESPN has been in the gutter for announcers for quite some time.

NHL = blah.
NFL= Troy and Buck are stoned halfway through the MNF game
Don't watch baseball.

Maybe the NBA is decent, just know TNT is where it's at for the pre/post game show.

We have struggled to run against odd fronts and exotic blitzes this year. When you run a zone scheme you run into that problem. Thats teh short answer.

The long answer is in order to actually counter this we needed to get our toss run working the issue is that play really only works when it has hte threat of the midline off it or quick rpo. Ralph Freidgin would have gone to I formation sets and running his version of speed potion agains the ouside backer. Johnson would go to flex TIght and rocket toss a team doing that to death then hit them with PA (whcih we almost did just... dropped it). Nix would have ran Reggie on QB draws against 8 man coverage ( what essentially won us the game) The issue was their nose was beating double teams.

And NCST is big on blitzes and weird fronts. Yesterday reminded me of the Syracuse game, but with more passing

I think the kicker was trying to judge the wind, which was gusting. Very difficult to do - he thought it would blow the kick back between the uprights, but it didn't. Hell of a kick.

May have been my fragile psyche, but the wind was constant all night and really started ripping in the last minute of the game. It was blowing the hardest of the night when they lined up the FG and I was really relieved when we called a time out. I thought maybe it would die off a bit… When they lined up the second time I swear it was blowing even harder.
If he got it in the air, it was gonna have the distance. Scary as hell!

After reading this entire thread, I have a couple three items.

1. What is the deal with our running backs? I haven't paid close enough attention, but in this game Philo had 57 of our 119...119...total rushing yards. Doesn't say much for the RB room.

2. Concerning BDS attendance numbers, it seems to me that if we played all of our games in one venue, Tech games would eventually recover the long-lost reputation for being the hottest ticket in Hotlanta. Here's why: when wifey and I go out for a date night, it's almost always to Players Retreat - a stone's throw from the NCSU bell tower, btw. We know the menu, the food is good, and we're comfortable there. Doesn't this analogy work for our home games, also?

3. Finally, how does the coaching staff use HK against Georgia when he's not really ready to go (unless we've been sandbagging the last two games)? I don't see the two QB trickeration working in Athens, so it may be time to simply let Philo be Philo.

If the OL couldn’t create any holes last night for our RBs, I am going to hate to see what happens against UGA next week. With a stacked box when King was in, that could be expected, but when Philo was in, and State had a more normal alignment, State still shut down our RBs.

You cant do the same thing every week and expect continued success- football is a game of tendencies and counter moves. We know the dwags will see what NC State did and replicate some of it, and we will plan our counter based on how we think they will play it. We have to out-plan them to beat them.

Reminds me of why Paul Johnson was such a great play caller - he could make in-game adjustments faster than other teams could respond.

Pretty sure NC State was holding 1-2x each play, not called.

Did anyone see Taye Seymore on the field? I didn’t see him. And I thought we had lost Efford for the first half of COFH on that targeting call. Our defense is playing better.

Man what a crazy 4th quarter. That sideline completion to Stockton on 3rd and long was a big time play. And I’m glad to see Boyd breaking out as the downfield threat we imagined he would be.

So crazy that we could not get any run going

Curious as to why that is crazy. That was our 5th of 11 games where we couldn’t get a running game going. That’s a pattern. We lost the other 4 games we couldn’t run the ball.

Last night we saw much more of handing the keys to Philo. But King is still King, especially in the red zone. And if he’s got one downfield throw in him, I’m fine with saving that for the 4th quarter next Friday.

Here’s another thing when NC State broke their last TD run, if their RB had dove inside the 10 they could have kicked a game winning last sec FG. Thankfully they must have turned off our Miami game film before Singleton’s last run.

I was glad he scored, because we still had 1:30 left to come back. Then we left 22 seconds and that was almost too much time.

The ACC video review team couldn’t be sure that the crown of his helmet made helmet-to-helmet contact. I’m very surprised that call got overturned

They had someone in the ACC replay booth. The way he explained it was that they didn’t think it was a hit with the crown of the helmet. On slo-mo replay, it looked like Efford shifted at the last second and caught him with the side of his helmet. Honestly that seemed like a very nuanced interpretation and I was shocked, but the TV guy that they had in the replay office that was listening to the conversations said something like, “If I was watching on TV I would’ve thought it was definitely targeting, but hearing the conversation and the reasoning I understand why it wasn’t.”

I would like to think that ACC replay officials would do that type of favor….
Yeah. I’d like to think that.

As for the on field crew…
I thought their spots (particularly for us) were really suspect all night.
I also thought NCSt got away with several holds on QB scrambles. Can’t rely on the refs to make every call, but there were at least a couple of big runs that shouldn’t have been.
I was also pretty ticked about one of our third downs late when it was clear that Haynes was releasing to the flat and NCSt defender just reached out and grabbed an eligible receiver so Philo had to eat it.
I’m guessing on tv replay I’ll see a couple we got away with but I think we overcame a little more than just our own obstacles.
