What is targeting
I think it's defined as how Efford hit the ball carrier. He's our guy and I'm rooting for him, but if that wasn't targeting, idk how the rule is supposed to be called.
I think back years ago to Richard Sherman mugging Julio in mid air and the ref going....

As Red said we have 3 games we scored the winning points in the last 22 seconds of the game. I bet that is the most of any college team this year. We easily could have lose 1-3 of those games. 7-4 is a good record for this team. All teams have injuries, we are no different as we have injuries. Football is a physical game.
The biggest thing the need to improves next year is putting opponents away.

We had FSU, UNC, and NCST all beat… until we didn’t.

Still an upgrade from last year when Miami had us clearly beat until THEY didn’t, and we never had BG or BC beat at all.

I don't think it was so clear. While tracking the ball, a receiver will "feel" the defender with his off arm. If the defender is at an arm's length from the receiver, then the receiver's arm will be fully extended.

The announcers were making it sound like that just because a receiver's arm is extended that it must be offensive pass interference. That is wrong. The receiver can feel the defender without pushing off.

The officials called the game consistently. they allowed hand play between receivers and defenders. I think that part of the game was officiated quite well.

Good no call.
Singletons fully extended his arm. College officials let both receivers and defenders do a whole lot with their hands and arms while the ball is in the air. I was not surprised PI was not called as that is how college officials call games.

A lot of folks who watch NFL games get confused as that would 100% have been Offensive PI in the NFL. Not so in college. Defenders routinely "mug" receivers in college and no call is made. That is the correct approach for DBs. Make the official call the penalty as most of the time they won't call a penalty for PI.

Then couple that with what looked like intern refs
Pretty sure NC State was holding 1-2x each play, not called.
Obviously the not targeting call was in our favor though
I particularly appreciated the two uncalled pushoffs by Singleton, both resulted in completions for us. If one is going to be bad at reffing, at least be consistent. That they did.

I had a buddy yelling about refs, and they missed a lot of holding, but I agree, they missed things on both sides.

Not much more to ad to prior comments but I shall any how:
  1. Very worried about Haynes King's lingering injury but darn, he is a gamer.
  2. Aaron Philo is fun to watch and has that swag....Aaron, please stay at GT and your buddy Stockton and you make a fun pair to watch.
  3. Frustrated with our ineffective running game last night, seven NCST D-men and sometimes eight in the box to stifle Jamal who is a top tier RB....we seemed to have no plan to address to balance our attack. You know Kirby and his DC were watching.
  4. Defense had moments of good and bad but damn, we got burnt by the QB scrambling. (Beware of this NCST QB, he is a true freshman.)
  5. Shout out to Barr the fg kicker and the snapper and holder and linemen for critical three fg's and three PAT's.
  6. Fun night, made the cold at BDS well worth it.
  7. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Some of yall are bringing up the close wins, just know that we would've lost those games in years past. Steady improvement in learning how to win.
I’ll take a last-minute comeback win over a fourth-quarter collapse loss, any time.

In the TFG era, we didn’t have that many games where in the fourth quarter we had a chance to either put the game away or come back to win a close one. However, of our few close losses in that era, we tended to fail to capitalize on offensive or defensive opportunities, leading to another loss.

Key has correctly emphasized playing 4-quarter, 60-minute games, which has led directly to our improved W/L record. As a fan, I’ve gone from expecting to lose to never counting this team out.

Let me preface my comments with
1) I have read none of the above yet
2) my son and I are on the home bound side of what will be 20 to 21 hour round trip to Cape Coral that started after we left the stadium after the game, so my thoughts will be more scattered brained than normal. My son is driving now. Just passed back through Sarasota and heading to Marietta.

The Defense deserves the game ball, despite giving up 22 points in the 4th quarter. Scored a TD and set up another at the 2!!!

What happened to our run game? NCSt wasn't supposed to be that good.

Glad the O pulled out the winning drive.

Some dropped passes earlier and some bad luck on what good have been 2 additional TDs.

Hope AP learns from some of the poor decisions on some of the passes.

We'll take dumb luck on their first turnover

Got lucky that Efford wasn't called for targeting

Both sides of the ball have plenty to work on.

Most importantly though.. WE WON!!!!

Exciting, competitive game.

I haven't followed NCSt much but I was impressed by their toughness. Their Freshman QB was shaky at the start of the game but when we allowed him to break contain he then settled down. He doesn't have the arm, but he plays like the old Philadelphia Eagles QB Randall Cunningham.

The NCSt defense was pretty stout. They stuffed our run game quite effectively and their pass coverage was pretty tight.

I am not a fan of the 3 man rush on the long field. I can understand it in Red Zone defense, but not on a long field. A 3-man rush against a dual threat QB on the long field should be a Capital Offense.

On live viewing, I think I counted 6 dropped passes: two by Hawes (one a big third down), the two biggies by Singleton, One (TD) by Avery and one by Chase Lane. Two would have been for touchdowns and one (the long play to Singleton in the first quarter) would have been down inside the 3.

Some of the drops were tough, contested catches, but the QB put the ball where the receiver could get two hands solidly on the ball. Had we caught even three of those six drops, the game would not have come down to the FG.

Yeah, Philo throws a hot ball, but the NCSt coverage was tight and those balls have to have zip. The dropped TD pass in the End-zone for the tipped INT, the QB has to put zip on that ball in that area of the field. Singleton was at the end of his route but looked around at the defense when Philo threw the ball. Got to keep your eye on the QB at the top of your route.

When Philo is in the game, we have gotten a look at our pass blocking, which is actually really good. I wonder how many points this O could have put-up with a healthy Haynes King?

I fully expect to hear that Haynes King will have his second shoulder surgery this off season and would not be surprised if this represents his last year as a QB at this level. Hope I'm wrong, but I don't see any QB controversy in the future over him.

Philo is a natural slinger. Without hesitation he can get balls through solid coverages into the hands of receivers. Hard to believe he can read a defense and deliver sweet balls like that given his experience level. Either he is going on raw instinct and that when the coaches give him stuff to think about is when we will see the hiccups or he is really that quick of a processor and we are looking at a future pro.

Birr is back, which is nice...
Good post MtnWasp. I agree with all thoughts expressed.

Pretty good article by Jackson Caudell (SI) on the game. The "GOOD" demonstrates how Coach Key's program is making significant progress towards a place we all desire for Georgia Tech Football. I believe Coach Key and his staff can fix much of the "BAD". Hopefully, they can make a lot of corrections before next Friday night.

SI strikes again with another copy/paste job from this: GT Postgame Notes

To Jackson's credit, he may have actually written the "Bad" part.

NCST’s run defense has had a mix all year of keeping their opponents behind schedule combined with giving up big plays. Last night, they did a lot of the first , but didn’t give up big plays aside from Philo.

If Jamal Haynes got past the first line of defenders, he’d have had a big game. He didn’t.

In our losses, our opponents sold out against the run, and we didn’t make them pay. Last night, NCST sold out against the run and still lost.
