I fully expect to hear that Haynes King will have his second shoulder surgery this off season and would not be surprised if this represents his last year as a QB at this level. Hope I'm wrong, but I don't see any QB controversy in the future over him.
I am expecting some type of surgery as well, and I think we'll know how serious it is based on when it's scheduled (12/2, or after the bowl game). If they schedule it immediately it's probably more serious. Or they know it's serious but want him to at least get one more bowl game. Ultimately, we won't know anything until the Spring game so this will probably be THE primary discussion on this board from January through April. Get ready for 100's of pages of no real information!

I've posted a few times that, assuming his injury makes it too hard to come back, I would not be shocked if he has a spot as a grad assistant on Key's staff. That is pure speculation, but given he's a coaches son and loves football it's probably a career choice for him, and given the obvious relationship between Key and King I'm sure we're open to it. Honestly, it could be just like Key and O'Leary's long-term coaching relationship. Heck, maybe you'll see Haynes King being announced as the next head coach in 2040!

I was watching at home (wanted to go but got sick this week unfortunately). The Bobby Dodd clock operator, who is a GT employee, was very liberal with clock stoppages on the final NCST drive with regards to when passes officially fell incomplete or players ran out of bounds. That is fairly standard home cooking in any college football game you watch. We weren’t able to sneak it by the official though.
Yeah we honestly screwed State before their kick. They called timeout with 5 seconds left, and because there was only 5 seconds left they decided to kick it. AFTER they broke the timeout huddle, the refs told Doeren they were adding 1 second. After the timeout and after they’d decided to kick it.

Doeren talks about this in his press conference. I can’t imagine how pissed Key would have been.

Regarding attendance, look at it with a little bit of nuance; our two biggest “home” games were not at home AND this season was our best attendance since 2018. Key keeps winning, people will show up.
Agreed. Our fans got burned repeatedly by the previous coaching staff. It takes time to rebuild that trust, and Coach Key is doing the right things to restore confidence in the team.

True but then Key called a TO to ice the kicker and Doeren had every opportunity change his mind. He had to call that TO after the first down regardless of whether there were 5 or 6 seconds left on the clock so that, to me, is a non-starter. Once Key called the TO all bets were off. He chose to ride with the initial decision. Had he really wanted to try one more play, and it would have HAD to go to the sideline, he could have done so.

I get Doeren being unhappy about it. I don't blame him for that. And you kind of expect that in the other team's building. But he didn't take any ownership for what happened after Key called TO when he had the chance to change his mind. Instead he went even deeper on the clock operator saying they lost 3 seconds on another drive.

They said, “Philo’s running the whole package” ad nauseum. We all saw he was running the ball. It’s called profoundly stating the obvious.
I actually don’t think he had many true RPO calls where he had to make reads on running or handing off. Just my guess, but the few runs he had that weren’t scrambles were (I suspect) called QB runs. My guess is oneo the tings Haynes is VERY good at is making the proper read on our RPO plays….which makes Jamal better, Haynes a btter running QB and likely helps our passing game as well. No knock on Philo…very few true QB’s are able to make accurate reads consistently on college level RPO’s as the defense does their best to confuse the QB.

Your bias is noted. It was a good play by the NCST defender on Haynes on the release. It was not a hold. He was in the backfield so he is fair game to be hit.

Singleton clearly pushed off on the long reception down the left sideline, college lets defenders and receivers get away with a lot.

How the Targeting call was reversed is still a mystery to me. GT fans would have gone ballistic had it been our player with the ball and an NCST player doing the Targeting had the call been reversed.

The officials were fairly decent last night!
i agree with Root (for a change…LOL). The targeting call was dropped against Efford just like two targeting calls against UM players were dropped. Personally, I think it was because Efford didn’t really “launch”…but the TV folks sais they could not tell if he really hit with the crown area which apparently is only a 6” area.

I got the impression that Philo was not making reads. I felt like they were mostly pre-determined reads/handoffs. Being a true fresh the speed of the reads may be an issue.

I never played the game and have a hard time diagnosing plays live - but it seems to me that Philo is operating more of an Air Raid offense. I'm pretty sure the 3rd and 18 he converted to Stockton against Miami last week was a classic Y-Cross. Four Verticals has made a come back which is a huge part of Buster's offense, but I think this is more due to Haynes (in)ability to throw. I'm not sure he's really been healthy all year, much less the last few games where he can't throw further than 5 yards.

If I'm an opposing defense, I'm sending the house at Philo going forward and not giving him time to read the field. That'll be his next evolution - if he can burn the blitz he could be *special*.

Please don't take this a knock against Haynes - he's a special player, healthy or not.

Ok, I went to the game with the wife (she "… hates to waste a ticket" which makes no sense, but there it is) since the son couldn't go. And froze my tail off, despite my long coat and gloves; a real Big 10 atmosphere. My impressions:

• The Fates were with us. That they gave the ball up 3 times, leading to the D giving us two TDs, was a tremendous gift and the key to the ball game. They've been doing that all year and Tech profited from it. Also, having McCall retire from football made it more difficult for them; with him at the helm they'd have won 8 - 9 games already. But Bailey is going to improve and make life difficult for their opponents.

• Coaching counts. After the game Key said that the staff had noticed that Bailey had a low delivery and told the D to get their hands up. Sure enough, he does and he paid for it. That was what Fridge told Godsey he'd have to get rid of or he'd never see the field at Tech. And the rest is history.

• Despite a fourth quarter where there were breakdowns, the D won the game. We stopped them for most of the game and that gave us a chance to win.

• And speaking of that, Philo showed us the future, provided he wins the job in the spring. I kept thinking where I'd seen a Tech QB like him and it came to me: Mike Kelly. Like Kelly, he can make any throw on the field and accurately too. And he can run, as he finally did to win the game. Btw, he should have run on the pass that was intercepted, but he's a freshman, he'll learn. If Buster/Weinke get to form the O around him, it'll work that much better. And look to see his high school Korpsbrudder Stockton taking a bigger part if this happens.

• NCSU is, as Garner said after the game, a better then 5 - 6 team. But they make too many mistakes. Tech's freshman QB didn't, btw; that interception was a tip on a pass Singleton should have caught.

• The run blocking was pretty bad and yet Tech won the TOP. Go figure.

• This outfit can beat Ugag. In fact they are pretty much Kirby's worst nightmare; a team that gets up for ranked opponents and has a long week to get ready for it. Will Tech do it again? 50 - 50 I'd say, especially if King gets ready. He seemed to think he could be more efficient next Saturday. Hope he's right, but if not it's Aaron time at Stanford. Either way that'll be fun.

Let's beat Georgia. Now.

That’s totally fair. Giving him 30 seconds to make that call is tough but I don’t disagree with anything you said.

4 verticals or 4 deep also clears out the field, if you have a RB/H-back running a wheel or flat route that takes out a LB. If the QB can get past the DL he often can run a long way. This is deliberate in some cases to open the field for a QB draw.

Angles from the stadium vantage point are different than front and center camera angle. Spots weren’t as bad as I thought and the one egregious error was corrected on replay.

You don’t know how the targeting was overturned? Even after watching last week? Singleton should’ve been called for OPI? Perhaps your bias should be noted as well! :D

FAR more egregious push offs by receivers get called maybe 1 in 100 times. Even if you argue that the rule book supports the call, it isn’t called that way.. pretty much ever. If that’s called OPI, it would be an outlier in the way games are officiated.

As for the release on Haynes, tv replay looks like it was more shoulder (legally engaging a blocker) than just reaching out and grabbing him as it looked from where I saw it last night.

for the record, I am biased… thank you

I think it's defined as how Efford hit the ball carrier. He's our guy and I'm rooting for him, but if that wasn't targeting, idk how the rule is supposed to be called.
I think back years ago to Richard Sherman mugging Julio in mid air and the ref going....

Tom And Jerry Smile GIF
Well they are consistent at least, there were multiple plays during the Miami game where I thought they had targeted for sure but the the announcer said he didn’t think it would stand because either the players in question didn’t launch off of their feet or hit with the crown of the head
