Duke is picked to finish 1st by 3 of those guys. 2nd by another. Somehow though Vegas odds have Duke as the 4th best team in the division. You have to wonder why there is such a disconnect between the supposed media experts whose predictions can't cost them anything and the sportsbooks and betters who actually have something to lose.

Two words Anthony Boone. ESPN hypes him a good deal and he's one of the only QB's coming back in the Coastal this year. Vegas sees him for what he is, a dude who threw 13 TD's and 13 INT's last year.

You get respect when you earn respect. Would you feel better if they picked us 3rd in the Coastal? We are what we are a mediocre team. This year CPJ has the opportunity to perhaps put a dent in the perception.
In Johnson's 6 seasons at Tech. we have finished first 3 times and second twice. That's not mediocre in the Coastal.

So how has UNC earned respect? They get picked in the top half of the division every year.

These individual beauty contest predictions are just drivel. That's why I only pay attention to past history ones and recognize that the historical prediction are very flawed but the best there is until a Vegas line the week before the game. Then the line has a standard deviation of about 6 points compared to what happens.

The bookies are super psychologists, making their money by accurately predicting not winners and losers, but the spread that entices just the right amount of interest in both sides of the game. They may actually believe that Duke is the best team in nation, but their goal is to find a ranking that will get 50% of the bettors to bet for Duke to finish 4th and 50% to bet on Duke to not finish fourth. It's and entirely different proposition for the sports books than the sports writer.

I agree 100%. I think duke got extremely fortunate last year. First their two cross-divisional games were NC State and Wake (2 of the 3 worst teams in the league). Secondly they got a break playing Miami after they just got done playing FSU and VT (not to mention losing Johnson for the year). They did beat VT and UNC on the road so kudos for that.

They don't even deserve kudos for that VT game. They played horribly. Somehow VT managed to play even worse. That game was a total disaster for both sides. They only got a W because someone had to.

I fully understand that but they are making spreads based on what they think will be the opinion of their customers and modify them accordingly as betting takes place. They have Duke 7 to 1 to win the Coastal right now. GT is 8 to 1. Their opinion of Duke's chances to win the coastal and their customers opinions of Duke's chances to win the coastal aren't very high. Not nearly as high as all of the media experts. Either everyone betting is a bunch of morons throwing their money away or the guys writing these prediction articles are being a little more optimistic about Duke than most people are.

Well PJ has a chance to rebuke the notion that his recruiting classes are very suspect-- 50s ranking. WE lost a LOT of players. If the talent and coaching is not there.we will not even get to a bowl .This yr I will be happy with 7-5.

Guess what they top 3 preseason
GT has finished with 7 wins or LESS the past 3 seasons WTH you expect people to predict.

We didn't even finish strong last year.

Maybe because their athletes do not have to do any real coursework and UNC can maintain good APR because you can earn some degrees there for something like 25% less credit hours than at Tech. As in, they have no excuse just like any typical factory so should be picked high "just because."

I have yet to see a post where this is the feeling you have about GT football. I seriously doubt you'll be happy with 7 - 5.

I agree,
There's another board that would prove you right along with their ring leader. All I see is negative things about our players, recruits and coaches, especially about Paul Johnson. It started to rub off on me, so I left. I may not like certain things but I will stand behind my school, our players, our recruits and our coaches as long as they as representing GT.

There's a couple of people on there that speak their minds without the being totally negative all the time. You know who they are.

We didn't even finish strong last year.

But the point is, no one else in our division "finished strong" last year, as far as conference standing (and that's what this thread is about) is concerned—except Duke, of all teams. We ended tied in conference record among all the 2nd-place teams. It's also pretty clear that that Duke's unusual success was a combination of good fortune and the outright self-destruction by the other "chosen" teams in the division.

Again I ask, why is our ugly season less deserving of respect than the other teams that were the chosen ones? If anything, they deserve less respect than we do, because they underperformed last season whereas we once again beat expectations. You can't point to how "mediocre" we were last season as a reason for being chosen to be in the bottom of the division, without acknowledging the equal mediocrity of the teams who only backed into their into marginally higher final positions, while not meeting media expectations. (Oooh, look at UNC! Division champions once again!)

WTH do I expect? I expect the media idiots who repeatedly overlook our chances to continually do the same. But I have to scratch my head to figure out why a Tech fan would want to defend their perpetually incorrect assumptions. We may not be a powerhouse in the conference right now, but we are closer to being a conference leader than we are to the bottom-feeders the media always expects us to be.
