Military Bowl: Pitt vs Navy

When this offense doesn't work, it's a painful experience.

But when it's working...it is glorious to watch. Navy has moved the ball at will all day, using all three phases and passing the ball.

A Fullback? When did they feature a Fullback. Are you confusing it with BBack?

Not sure if you're being sarcastic...so I'll answer your Q as if you're really asking.

Navy lined up in the "I" quite a few times with a full fledged "Fullback".

Also on their web site roster they call the ab the sb (split?) . The bb is called the fullback.

Please cleanse my eyes I have seen heresy!

Shotgun snap to qb who fakes a pass and runs 10 yds utm for td.

Don't tell those on here that think we can only run our O from under center (because Paul Johnson said so) that Navy had some success running plays from the shotgun/pistol set. Also don't tell them that on the QB draw you are speaking of, the whole Navy line was in a 2 point stance. It's not possible to run the ball with your lineman in that position and said stance will make us too predictable...

Every single starter on Navy's offense was a senior, except for one receiver, who is a junior. Just spitballin' here, but may - just maybe! - that had something to do with their success.

It's interesting. The announcer said Navy has a 3 game bowl winning streak. That means Navy has been good enough to win their last game the past 3 years, but also won enough to get to 3 straight bowls. Of course, a little easier to do that with Navy's schedule, but you have to think the system Coach KN is running at Navy is helping to transition new players in as Navy obviously hasn't been a senior laden team the past three years. I don't have time to look up the class disparity of their teams, but you have to think they've had some young teams the last 3 years.

2013: 9-4
2014: 8-5
2015: 11-2

Went 8-5 in 2012. Also have to give credit to Ivin Jasper, who some have considered one of the best option QB coaches of last 10 years. Look at his track record with QBs. Ricky Dobbs and Keenan Reynolds, then also consider what he's done with the offense. Pretty impressive stuff from Jasper.

You can definitely say that CKN has taken what CPJ built at Navy, and taken it another step further.

Quick Google search showed they started 7 seniors and three juniors in 2014. http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools.../depth_chart_non_event/2014-Navy-FB-Depth.pdf

In 2013 they started 3 seniors and 5 juniors. http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools...3-14/misc_non_event/navy-depth-chart-1215.pdf

In 2012 they started 5 seniors and 2 juniors. http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools...-13/depth_chart_non_event/depth-footbl-12.pdf

Their 2011 team went 5-7.

Look, I'm not saying there aren't things we can't do, or that Johnson is some kind of football deity, but I don't think anyone here has come even close to isolating the variable, and I do think Johnson is a helluva coach. I guess my point is that experience matters, certainly more than I thought five months ago.

So are u saying our system is so complicated that it only works every 3 or 4 years?
Suffer till they are all seniors is not a sellable plan. Suffer till 7-8 are seniors not a good plan either ( sucks to be unluckly recruited in wrong year).

We need to win while rotating out 3-4 players a year.

The hope is with much better athletes and coaches and facilities gt can be a superior team. Not to hope to beat Pittsburgh. Hope to beat uga, CLEMSON, etc on semi frequent basis.
Its not how good navy looked. Its how bad we looked.
We can do it next year IMO.

Like I have mentioned many times before. Navy runs the option way more efficiently then we do. I don't know exactly why that is, but it has been that way for a few years now. They take much less time to develop plays then we do.

Also, several of PJs coaching tree have taken the 3O and have kept a lot of the base concepts, but have expanded on it and made it more versatile. (Mix in power I, shotgun, TIght end) like others mentioned maybe a two point stance here and there to help with pass pro. for those that seem to think that makes too predictable, look at our pass plays from a 3 point stance and see how terrible the blocking is anyway when it's not expected a pass play. I wish this is something PJ would at least attempt to do. He doesn't have to completely change the offense, but why not let JT run a few plays with shotgun/zone read option. I think JT would be a lot more effective if he had more space and time to read the defense and make a decision. Just look at his HS film where he is almost exclusively out of the shotgun and runs zone/read.

I like the 3O, and I don't think we should totally go away from it but in year 9 I think we can start to mix some things up. Watching this past years offense was one of the most painful things I've ever had to bare.

There's no doubt experience matters. No disagreement there.

As you mentioned, there is no one variable that GT can correct to make everything "right" again. I've mentioned it in other threads, but GT (up until this year) has been one of the most consistent programs in the last 2 decades. It's not like CPJ has been a bad coach...just the expectations have changed (and that's of his creation).

One of the things that stands out in those roster links is how much depth Navy has been able to build. I think part of it is Navy has no roster/scholarship limits. Very rare to see JR/SR depth on the OL that many years in a row.

I hope CPJ and the entire offensive staff as well as JT sat down and watched Navy run this offense yesterday. It was damn near flawless. Hopefully JT can break down Kenan Reynolds film and learn a few more tricks on how to better QB this offense. If PJ is the competitor as we think he is this should add fuel to the fire of wanting to fix what happened this year. Personally I think he will but Ken N has raised the bar on how to run this offense.

It is as if CPJ hasn't run plays out the gun before or the offense has never ran smooth before. It isn't as if Cook has done both with his designs of the 3O. The logic of completely abandoning the shotgun snap misses me, yes, but let's be grounded in saying CKN has taken the O to the next level.
