I want to remind everyone that 20 year old men in top condition can play 40 minutes of basketball. We were the fresher team at the end tonight.
My son plays at a small college and he played 39 minutes on Tuesday (lost by 3 on the final possession). I asked him how he felt and he said he felt great. I definitely think that a bench helps, but I agree with you on this one. I think it’s the game after game grind that catches up to a team. There are so many breaks in a game now with the timeouts every four minutes that they get to rest frequently.

I didn’t get to watch the game yet because of a work meeting, but I was glad to see in the box scores that Powell had a nice game. I’m happy to see him thriving.

Where were the students. The arena is not that far. We should be getting over 1000 every home game. Somehow the students need to feel like this is their team. I realize the weather kept people home when it is on tv.

The weather wasn’t really a factor. Cold but not terrible and the roads were perfectly clear (at least on the north side of town). The crowd was maybe a little on the light side, but pretty normal for GT unfortunately. The students are in “show me” mode just like most of the rest of the fan base. It is what it is. Stoudamire gave a shout out to the fans’ energy after the game, which he doesn’t usually do.

The 5 guys (3 injured, 1 sick, 1 MIA) absent from last night’s game v VT accounted for 50% of the team’s minutes & 59% of the team’s scoring. That’s 99.2 minutes out of 200 & 44.1 points out of 74, gone before tipoff. Beating any conference foe, even at home, with a team that depleted of contributing scholarship players is pretty remarkable. To make this win even more astounding to me is seeing 5 GT guys on the NCAA injury list but 0 VT guys, who played at full strength 10 men against our 7. And 2 of those 7 only accounted for 14 minutes, mostly to spell Souare, who still played 32 minutes. The other 4 starters played 37, 38, 39 & 40 minutes.

In press conferences CDS been saying he will not use injuries as an excuse and his badly shorthanded team is still talented & skilled enough to win, complimenting his players on hard play & defense. Honestly, I didn’t buy that, but understood he had to take that position to keep his team from just giving up altogether on the season. Well, the team bought it and that’s what counts. Don’t know whether this team will ever be fully healthy this season or how many more wins they can pull off so undermanned, but last night was a big WOW for me. Big time props to these young men and much maligned coaching staff. I don’t see many, if any, Division 1 teams that can compete or even make the effort to compete missing so many big contributors to minutes & scoring.

A super effort on DEF especially with the short bench. The Souare block and the Ndongo steal with dunk near end were key (as well as a STUPID Vt foul on a wild 3 pt shot by Powell) , made the difference.
I've got to give huge kudos to Powell for his offensive game esp his post-up with a spin ,to his LEFT-hand, shot. As good as it gets.

Saw some walking towards midtown with the flag giveaway. Told them the arena was the other way.

Sure, they can but when they’re forced to do it game-after-game, that’s where the problems originate. It makes our margin of error non-existent.

Nice win by the guys tonight, but it wasn’t easy. I thought it was a really good effort by both teams. VT made it difficult for us, but the D really stepped up down the stretch.

VT shot 42% (11/26) from 3, out rebounded us by 10 (37-27) while we shot 65.4% (17/26) from the charity stripe, and we still won by 7. Goes to show you what the team is capable when they play with this level of effort.

In closing, I’ve been critical of Baye’s effort all season but not tonight. He was all over the court, snatching boards, and hustling. His huge steal and dunk was a beautiful. We’re a much better team when he plays with purpose.

Thanks for keeping the faith.

One of the better defensive games this team has played in terms of closing the game out on that end. Ndongo and Souare were absolute monsters down low to close out the game. I only got to watch the final 5 minutes so I don't know how the previous minutes went, but defense definitely won it for us to close out the game. Our offense was attrocious, but maybe it was CDS's way preserving the guys so they could cross the finish line. Nait and McCollum dribbling the ball around until they shot the ball wasn't beautiful basketball, but it may have been necessary in the closing minutes given how depleted we were...and looked.

WE have bench depth is what this says. And the players haven't given up. Nor the coach. Nor me. I'd give CDS 1/4 the time we've given Hall.

I second the comments about effort and the defensive plays down the stretch.

I will add that we won without the bangup performance I was expecting/hoping for from McCollum - not a bad performance, but he left a lot of open shots on the floor that he normally makes. He hits a couple of open 3's/other shots and we make 75% of our free throws and we win going away

We also won with our lineup allowing VT to play a one man zone in the paint contesting drives. Powell's 3 pt shooting and our advantage in points off turnovers and fast breaks made up for it.

George moved the ball and we didn't see much pounding the ball looking for THE pass - just move it. And we didn't try to make Ndongo a post player - his touches were on the move and at the FT line.

This was huge for getting us into the ACC tournament (bottom 3 don't go this year). If we had had this level of energy from the start of the year that wouldn't be the issue it is now.

I only know what I’ve heard from media. Mustaf maybe 1-2 weeks. Reeves and O’Brien no timeline. Terry has the flu so hopefully only out for one game.
I'll be surprised if we see Luke or Kowacie again this season. Luke because he told me at one of the games that he tore ligaments in his ankle.

Kowacie is most likely to take a similar path to Lance a year ago. Look to sit the remaining games and come back for one last ride.

....and to hopefully get that GT degree!

Ibrahim Souare, alongside roomate, Nait George, celebrating well-earned W to overwhelming approval & joy of their teammates. Nice to have moments like this in such a difficult season

Thanks for sharing that...Glad to see them smiling and having fun! Lesser men would have quit a long time ago!!

Souare is definitely the class-clown on the team. He's always having fun, even when he was the 13th man a year ago.

I'm super happy for him more than anyone. He's earned everything that has come his way.

Lot of young’ns coming in next year. Getting Reeves back would be a positive. Sylla thanked Ndongo in his announcement, having spoken to him by phone the day before. Not having an NBA quality second year we could see Baye back & playing alongside his countryman next year too.

Saw a kid in the concourse walkway in a Souare jersey a couple games ago. Loved it!
