Looking ahead....too early to predict 2025? No, I can't keep rehashing last night vs Vandy, so......

The schedule looks easier next year than it was this year. Until we get some guys that are real headhunters, we are going to continue to struggle on defense. I am hoping some of the younger guys will be a lot tougher and meaner and find some identity as a true badass defense. On offense, we have to find some guys that can get a damn yard when we have to have it. Our O line looks good one series and then looks like crap the next. No consistency. If King is hurt, play the next guy until he gets well. In my opinion, King is good but not great and I think the guys behind him have more potential to lead this team to improved performance. The offensive play calling looks brilliant sometimes but at other times it seems sluggish, predictable and has cost us a few games we should have won. Key needs to improve on game and clock management. He also needs to quit talking toughness and truly instill it and demand it from our players.

We are close to having a really solid team, but we have to overcome our shortcomings and learn how to win.

Go Jackets!

To instill a principle in a group:
  1. Define Clearly: Communicate the principle in simple, memorable terms.
  2. Model the Behavior: Demonstrate the principle consistently yourself.
  3. Incorporate in Culture: Embed it in routines, policies, and practices.
  4. Reinforce Regularly: Use stories, recognition, and rewards to highlight adherence.
  5. Involve Members: Encourage participation and feedback to foster ownership.
  6. Lead by Example: Ensure leadership embodies the principle at all times.
  7. Use Rewards and Consequences: Encourage adherence with incentives and address deviations firmly but fairly.
Communicating the principle requires talking about it.

Demanding it from our players becomes easier when our depth chart gets deeper and he can sit some players who don't deliver.

We're not at the "next man up" stage; we're still at "only man available" at some positions.

Is it way too early to predict wins and losses for 2025, less than 24 hrs after the disappointing Vandy loss? Lots of unknowns in terms of transfer portals and how did last night's game hurt GT, if at all. Or will it motivate us? Tough schedule again......

@ Colorado 8/30 (Win in a tough opener)
@ BC (Loss to a physically pound the rock team)
@ Duke (Loss-Duke is no longer the Duke of old)
@ NCST (Win)
@ Wake Forest (Win)

Gardner Webb 9/6 (Win)
Temple 9/20 (Win)
UGA @ MBS 11/29 (Loss but again compete)
Clemson (Win, we finally we get Dabo)
Pitt (Win)
Syracuse (Loss)
Virginia Tech (Win to make up for this year)

8-4 regular season. several of these games we will win we shouldn't win and blow a couple we should win.
I think our schedule is easier than this year, and think we can go 9-3.

Predicting records is not my thing. Focusing on what we need to do to get better matters to me a lot more. First and foremost, I do feel like we are building something, and, although our record ended the same as the year before, we were clearly more physical In ‘24. That trend must continue. Additionally, struggling physically at the QB position and being forced to rotate players is hard to overcome. It was a tough break for the team and, once again things could have been different.

Starting with the defense, IMHO the missing ingredient that kept us from being a way above average unit was the lack of takeaways. We didn’t turn the ball over much on offense and if we could have just been in the upper third of cfb in takeaways on defense, we could have ended the year with just a couple of losses. We had depth at DL in ‘24 and were schematically much more effective and coherent. What will our depth look like next season? Well, your guess is as good as mine. I like how we are developing toughness and individual talent, but we need to have talent to restock the shelves after considerable losses. Here is hoping.

On offense, I am hugely optimistic. There are some players coming in with big numbers in skill areas and we have returning talent and experience. The only question mark will be plugging a couple holes on the OL. I really like Rutledge and McKinney and they will provide a strong nucleus for some other guys to grow into their roles. You can’t say the staff hasn’t focused on this part of the roster.

Special teams will be fine. Birr will have a great year. He has a pretty pure kicking motion and should do quite well.

Good summary. I believe much of the issue with lack of takeaways was our inability to pressure opposing QBs. We were way low in the rankings on sacks generated. QBs had time to either find a receiver, run with the ball or throw the ball away. That results in very few interceptions. Fumbles recovered are somewhat random.

Will we have a DL individual who can create havoc by himself? Unknown. We blitzed more than I have seen in a long time in the Bowl Game. That may be more common next year. A second year in the scheme should help.

King's health is a huge question. There is no question he was not as capable throwing the ball much of this season as compared to last season. We really have no idea how serious or fixable his shoulder injury is.

If we keep the coaching staff on offense and defense together that bodes well for next season. The Spring Portal window will be a potential challenge as well as an opportunity.

yep---I think the Dbs only had 2? ints all season. If so, that' got to be a Tech record for the passing era.Not getting the ints wouldnt be so bad if they were tackled immediately but there were a bunch of "lost"(uncovered) receivers" in our DEF back at times--like a TD on Fri.
Another weak slot that is not talked about much is Ctr.Almost no exp there.

I just finished rewatching. We could have won that game had our spirit not been broken during those referee kerfufels. But we have alot of holes to fill in order to win more than 6-7 games next year. We operate on the tiniest of margins
For a run at ACC its going to take more games where Key wins the coach against coach.
Just telling players to trust, do thier job, and dominating the other player is coaching blah blah.

Key needs to find the coach that put in the preventv 3 man dl when we had uga down with 5 minutes to go..Team has not recovered.

Were they pushed onto the coaching version of a transfer portal?

Both are taking the same positions at Miss State, who was in the SEC cellar. Colorado was a top 25 team (by the voters, not the advanced stats). This seems less than a lateral move, despite what Sanders said.

On defense, we’re 73rd in points per game at 25.6. In penalty yardage, were the 9th best with 40.3 yards/game.

Alabama is #1 in turnovers recovered at 2.3/game. We’re #123 at 0.8/game. BYU gets 1.7 interceptions/game, we get 0.4 (#123).

We are #36 in first downs, and #42 in yardage. That’s fairly stingy, except where it counts (points).

We’re also #123 in sacks/game at 1.3 (we’re technically tied for #119). Ole Miss gets 4.5/game. #25 Clemson gets 2.8/game.

Coverage didn’t look great to me this year. I saw a lot of defensive backs with their backs to the QB when the pass was thrown. I haven’t seen any reason to believe that the front 6 is weaker than the backfield. If the secondary is lights out, you get coverage sacks (or the QB runs a lot). I think we have room to improve across the board.

All of these play off of each other. Better coverage leads to more sacks. More pressure leads to fewer completions and more interceptions (and makes your coverage look better). More team speed makes it harder for the QB to scramble for 15 yards.

I wouldn’t focus directly on turnovers; create havoc and the turnovers will come. Pass defense needs to be more aggressive, and the front 6 needs to bring chaos.

this SO much, in addition to that, we need smart plays and play-calling that give our guys the best chance to get that short yardage, not just running head-on into a brick wall and hoping our OL suddenly blocks like the Hogs of Redskins glory days…
