Looking Ahead - OL

We won 1 game in the acc so fans can be upset but I totally disagree with obvious poor choice of words Weak and scared has no basis in fact. Your son was a very pleasant but unanticipated suprise addition to an ol that was expected to be a strength for 15. We went from hoping to let him grow for a year to throwing him into battle when we changed philosophy from power to speed at any cost. Sorry he only go to play part time this year as he could potentially be a 4 year starter. Hope U can buy him lots of steak in the offseason.
That said = For us to pick out a few plays and be critical of player blocking is unfair to players. (My son 6-5 310 also played ol in D1). I know Even in base offenses the blocking is complicated, but no comparison to what we do @ gt. The 5 th year senior who your son first spelled for was same guy that 2 years ago was frequently offsides (rt) and got plenty of scapegoat criticism. He was moved to lt and was never offsides and this year was half count late off the line.

Not sure why Coaches could not fix this issue.

Now to a fun thing = met Seager parents who said he roomed with bryan - not a bad deal to have senior roomate who majors in nuclear engr. At the uga game his family must have been busting with pride as they saw him lead team on field holding the American flag.

Seagers parents are awesome ! Will played in 10 games starting 6 so he is OK w not redshirting this year . He did not enroll early to redshirt . He is pissed and will stay pissed until they kick BC's *** in Dublin . For someone to say our OL is weak and scared , that is just stupid . I have zero patience for people who post that kind of nonsense . Merry Christmas !

Of course he was a step down because he was not an All ACC player, but cheese Devine could of pancaked his guy every play and still would have been overlooked/giving shrug for his play bc of the overall dismal play of the OLine

Well this is probably fair to some degree as well.

I'll just say that I'm more excited about Bryan and Klock than I am Devine, but nothing would make me happier than for him to make a fool out of me. It wouldn't be the first time, and it won't be the last

FWIW, i'm actually pretty excited about the OL moving forward.

Imo, Devine looks bad in space because of what we ask him what to do. There absolutely no reason why Shamire should be trying to cut block anyone especially pulling while trying to get a kick out block

staff needs to adapt more to talent. And we can. Thats the issue. Its not like we can't tweak how we block....

but, I will say our asst coach stinks. So there. Then you add that to scheme not being the best in certain situations (pass pro) and for certain types of talent.

If Devine went pro, he'd be expected to cut block on the backside of most running plays.
We want him to cut block on the front side of some running plays.

Going forward my wag is that we see Will at Center and move Freddie to RG with Shamire at LG and Chris and Klock at Tackle.

Mike is the OT , but a OT cannot get to him when he is flying outside at the snap ... 4.9 / 5.0 chasing 4.6 ... not a good combination . most folks have no ideal how important the calls are between the OT and A backs . This year , the youngest in CPJ's history . For all you we can't
pass pro folks . Look at film and see how many were backs missing blocks ... This was a perfect storm season . Yet we still fought like hell and were competitive in most every game . I remember shaking my keys at GT fans leaving at halftime when GT had teams that were getting blown out . This team w all the injuries , and players leaving ( academics etc ... ) still was one possession away from wining 9 games . They never quit . See you in Dublin .

The SEC schools , ND , Mich State and FSU were wanting him to play Center . If he has a chance at the next level , thats prob where he will be .

Interesting. I thought that a kid who went to school with sham went to fsu? & was a center.
Is it even remotely possible sham could move to center? They left him uncovered at guard because he is so strong and because he cant get lb.
No matter what = He has to get in shape - the published weight is off by quite a bit. I think he will fix it! His down blocks look like a bulldozer.

This is actually something I wish we talked more about, the intricacies of OL. When we do weekly breakdowns, @Boomergump and @Longestday do a fantastic of breaking down what they're seeing, but it's tough for them to tell when a blocking call should have been switched or other stuff. Maybe @flea77 could do a little column (my dream would be a recurring column) to talk about lineplay and its various fineries (hand placement, drills, technique, theory, etc.) Its the stuff that NEVER gets covered in games, or football books (of which I have quite a few), and I DEVOUR it anytime it gets covered.

If he won so many matchups, why couldn't we run up the middle?

When the MLB is flying outside, sometimes we have the play side AB cut him. There were quite a few times this year where the OT and the AB were looking at each other after the play in confusion.

He followed that up by saying he will take ownership of that from that point forward.

He isn't reading to see if he is needed for the dive before he takes off. It is just one of the wrinkles that DCs throw at us. Have an OLB take the A Gap while the MLB fills the pitch lane. With that said, you are right in a sense. If teams are unsuccessful stopping the dive by blitzing the A Gap or having the DE crash, then they may have to look towards involving the MLB more. In any case, when you see a MLB blow up a play in the pitch lane behind the LOS, he wasn't waiting around to read the dive.

Now I learned that that's when passing over them loosen up the attack but the line could hold the blitz and JT was unable to connect enough. Clemson, Duke, & ND basically abandoned the pass defense. GT burned them but not enough for teams to abandoned the attack. What could remedy that?

No doubt there was a ton of blitzing this year. Teams would run blitz and then just keep coming if it was a pass. It left a lot of open space that was only taken advantage of on occasion. The remedy is finding the open space whether one on one coverage with the WRs or just some dump offs to dragging backs out of the back field.
