JT is taking a beating

I know JT is getting frustrated because he can't carry the whole team on his back, But my other concern is over the past few weeks he tends to look a little slower and is taking a beating ; I think CPJ should maybe pull him out of the game and replace him with the backup to get some valuable reps if the game gets out of hand early to avoid any injury.

I'm surprised he's not been seriously hurt this yr with what has happened.
After Beverly went down ,I was afraid of the other shoe might drop.MJ playing vs clem ,fsu and uga--not that would have been ugly.

Other than when our Qb broke an arm trying to make a tackle, how often have our QBs been injured? I remember Nesbitt having a sprained ankle (not uncommon), and I remember Justin looking a little 'hobbly' after the duke game (twisting ankles). People make it seem like our QBs are made of glass, but I have seen no evidence that indicates they get injured more than QBs in other offenses.

That is an interesting observation. People might expect that our QBs are more exposed because of the type of offense we run, but since he is usually on the move as opposed to stationary shotgun QBs that sometimes get blindsided he might be less exposed to game or career ending injury. Does that make any sense?

We've only had 1 game get outta hand and while Clemson is a great team I honestly don't think we ever got off of the bus against them. I don't see FSU blowing us out unless we go in and lay down, when we play hard we're 9/10 in it til the end no matter how much talent is against us.

Don't forget the mid-term thing with our team, it is real.

I think knowing how to take hits is important for players who take a lot of hits. I can't remember a time when a defender got a clean hit on Tevin in the open field, but I do remember a few UNC players teeing off on Vad his final year as a Jacket. Some players have a knack for avoiding injuries and some don't. I also don't think it's a pocket passer vs running qb issue. Mike Vick may have been one of the most athletic Qbs ever, but he couldn't go two games without getting dinged up.

We went through this in an earlier post .... where I ended up is that every QB we have had has gotten dinged up so they don't throw or run as well. Some, like Jaybo, just couldn't take the D1 hits.

JN is a good example. After the plays towards the end of some of the games it was an effort for him to get back up and get to the huddle. Of course that affected his performance.

TW got tired too. And beat up with his foot speed going down. I also think that is probably why TW was so much better early in the games than late (don't even mention OT). Anyone who gets tired and beat up won't pass / run / make as good of decisions.

Now back to your basic question, "People make it seem like our QBs are made of glass, but I have seen no evidence that indicates they get injured more than QBs in other offenses." My answer is if you define injuries as those events which prevent playing at all there is probably no difference. But if you define injuries to include events which significantly degrade a QB's ability to execute the scheme, I think our QBs get injured far more since they are running a lot more than a pro style passing QB with hits. Plus since we aren't good at pass blocking, they have to run for their lives. But since they see what's coming, they can avoid hits a lot better.

It's really too bad that there isn't a QB somewhere who has played in both types of offenses, the I or pro set vs. the option, so we could ask him which hit he feared more. I'd bet my house -- not much, but still mine -- he would tremble at the thought of being stationary in a pocket.

Ok, I'm the straight man.

Don't ask Vad.

er, what do you call Beverly? a WR ?--he is a QB in our offense, practicing our offense--he is out the FOR YR!
I don't remember a backup QB being hurt this badly at any other school and their offense--we take hits and do cuts in this offense at QB,it is possible to get hit almost every play--very unlikely in shotgun offenses

JT has lost a lot of swagger since the Orange Bowl. He just does not bring it at crunch time like he did last year at the end of the season. I'm sure he is the best we got but hopefully he is just having his sophomore slump in his junior season. If we keep losing, we need to play some other guys just to get them some real game reps in preperation for the future. At some point you just have to accept that this particular group of players don't have the talent or more likely the heart to make it happen. I hope that is not the case but it is beginning to look that way.

Go Jackets!

I think the main reason that JT may be having trouble is offensive execution. Due to our long list of top O talent on the sidelines, that has sucked. We might be having the light come on - we'll see - but I can guarantee you he'd be having an easier time if the right supporting cast was out there.

As to getting banged up: by this time of the year every QB in the FBS is banged up. I do think that the damage for our QBs from having to run is less then many assume. It is really hard to get a clean shot at a QB running an O like ours; most of the time you end up hanging on as they go pass you or having to lay off to avoid a personal foul. That doesn't mean they don't feel it by the end of the game, especially when they are 8 games into the season without a break. But I don't think this is all that unusual at the level Tech plays.

One example in the seven years we have run the offense. And we don't know anything about how he obtained the injury.

Also, @Nuke, you saying you think they got worse as the game goes on is only backed by your observations. I watched the same games and do not agree. Unless there is an interview out there where a QB makes these claims I'm not going to buy into it. I thought Nesbitt and TW always looked strong finishing games (decision making not included).

How many QBs in the NFL this year alone have been sidelined with injuries?

I think JT is playing fine. It's just that no one around his is playing very well. This has been re-hashed ad infinitum, but that's to be expected with:

Laskey (co-starting BB): NFL roster
Days (co-starting BB): NFL training camp
Smelter (starting WR): NFL roster
Waller (starting WR): NFL roster
Mason (starting OG): NFL roster

That's serious talent that moved on to the highest arena of football. And it's been replaced by a bunch of freshman and sophomores.

I can't explain the offensive line struggles, but JT without 4-5 NFL players around him is clearly not able to do as much. I'm not sure that he's any more beat up - he's just not able to distribute to the graduated guys that are (at least for now) much more talented.

I love the potential of Marcus Marshall, MLD, and Jeune. But right now they're not close to Laskey/Sims, Perkins/Zenon/et al, and Smelter/Waller. They'll improve as the season goes along, but it's never truly plug-and-play.

That's one player hurt in eight years. That's not evidence of anything other than a fluke injury.
