I'd like to know what the 7 felonies were and the rationale for dropping them to 2 misdemeanors. Was it an illegal search? Did something get field tested as a drug (hence a felony) but then turn out to be legal material (and thus dropped entirely)? What's the deal?

Just what is the discipline being administered? Not playing? Sorry, but that's weak sauce in the way of discipline.
Being charged with 7 felonies doesn’t mean you’re going to get convicted or that a judge even finds probable cause for 7 felonies. They may have been tossed at the preliminary hearing. Prosecutor often throw whatever they can at a perp in hopes that something sticks.

Hasn't played a snap since the day of the alleged arrest.

Interesting he somehow got caught on Oct 18 given that's the same day of the Duke game in which he played. Dude took the team flight home after a nice win, and decided to immediately drive to Athens and commit felonies.

Oconee County...Hwy 316 (Hwy to Hell/Athens) according to the crack reporters at the AJC.
Hate to say it because I was really excited when we signed him - he should transfer because Tech isn’t the best fit for him. I’m all about second chances (I’ve had a few myself in life…actually third and fourths too!). This one just doesn’t feel right.

This is a thread about a report of multiple acts of bad judgement--and apparently not malicious intent.

There are parents and players who see what we post--I even see threads from this site recommended on Google.

I recommend an extra review before posting, and keeping in mind that the board is public and anyone can see these posts.

It’s probably because of the fact that it’s concentrated THC (i.e. wax) inside of a vape pen. One .5 gram cartridge that’s $20 gets treated like it’s a significant quantity of marijuana. It’s a weird grey area that definitely benefits the law.

The thing is, people travel everywhere with these things. Even on planes. Because you can’t tell by looking at it whether it’s a THC vape pen or a tobacco vape pen. Which makes me think his car smelled and/or he was acting nervous and consented to a search.

Honestly, it’s dumb because of the act itself. But it’s almost just as dumb that he got caught because it’s so easy to hide. He literally must have been waving the pen to the cop.
This is your father. I’m concerned that you know so much about this.

He's taking the approach of "If you want to beat the dwags, you've got to be able to think like a dwag."

It's a weed pen. Weed is decriminalized in Atlanta and Athens, just a fine and most the time not even that. Sounds like he just got stopped in between the two for speeding and had an overzealous cop try to hit him with as many things as he could try.

This may come as a surprise to you, but lots of Georgia Tech football players have smoked weed over the years, probably the majority even in the last 25 years. They just didn't always get caught.
@yeti92 great reply. Lots of us GT folks like to take a holier than thou attitude regarding these types of infractions. In reality is the only sin here that he got caught??!!?? As you point out, most weed is decriminalized across most jurisdictions. In reality it was just a way to incarcerate black men. Thankfully we have for the most part moved past this.

Very sad.
4EVER writes, "...people travel everywhere with these things." Well, yeah, "people" who smoke dope probably do travel with them.
Marijuana usage has become so ubiquitous that pro and college teams have virtually stopped random testing. I would guess that Perry's arrest in the possession of any amount of the drug would trigger a GT Athletic Department-mandated drug test...which he failed...so, I doubt that he plays again until his sytem is "clean"...
So old school in your thinking. Let's hope the AD doesn't think this way!

Carrying "illegal" stuff a driving more than 10-15 mph over the limit = I'm flaunting not being the sharpest spoon in the drawer, not even in the knife section.

Hope he, and others in his circle, learned what NOT to do.

He's lucky to get off with a relatively light penalty.
How sharp a spoon were you at 18? I almost got booted from Tech before I started for drinking at FACET and then going to the Luau. I was about 2 weeks past my 18th birthday. Here we are 38 years and 2 degrees later, and I finally escaped Dean Moore's secret probation.

Kind of weird to drop to 88 mph. Over 85 in a 65 is a super-speeder ticket (+$200) and can include a reckless driving charge. There shouldn't be a difference between 91 and 88. 91 is a 65 is easy, depending on the vehicle, especially at 18. Under-developed frontal cortex...sigh. I wonder if there were others in the car that the drugs may have belonged to. Typically, if there are drugs in the car, there's going to be a possession charge, not just a paraphernalia charge.
If it is a super speeder ticket he is under 21 and will lose his license for 6 months.

Most likely, GT (or a powerful donor) pulled some strings. Probably, someone associated with GT put in a call to the local DA, who is a friend, to get charges reduced. Petty probably has a clean criminal and driving record, and he didn't crash or kill anyone so the local DA was willing to reduce charges if Petty pleaded guilty. He's probably going to do a lot of community work, and he will probably get the book thrown at him if he F's up again.

For every arrest you read in the papers, there's probably like 10 other instances that never make headlines. I think Key is pretty good at keeping his players accountable. I'm sure Petty's discipline will

That's true but I'd like some transparency. If the prosecutor announced that the speed detection device hadn't been properly calibrated and they couldn't prove beyond reasonable doubt he was travelling 91 mph, that would be helpful. Likewise, if he said that the material found in the vehicle turned out to be a legal substance after all, once they got it back to the lab for analysis, that would be a good explanation. In the absence of explanations though all we can do is speculate. I know how I feel about the way UGA has run it's program and the number of moving violations that have happened under Kirby Smart. I also know it stinks on ice and there's a lack of transparency as to how charges simply disappear over there. I'm not saying that Petty has done anything like what happened at UGA. But I am saying that none of us know anything and unless this is all the doing of some rogue police officer or unhinged prosecutor then there must have been a good faith basis for the 7 felonies in the first place.

Probably, but we don’t know due to said non-transparency.

There is an assumption of innocence until proven guilty. A prosecutor can toss whatever charges he/she wants at anyone, but those charges are reviewed by a judge (or grand jury) prior to formal charges/indictment and then are litigated in court. All to protect the innocent.

As you say, we don’t know if this was an overzealous prosecutor or if something got swept under the rug. Thank God no one was killed, and maybe the young man has learned a lesson.
