Is this targeting?

Yep, I would have felt better with a review. Just ignoring it raises red flags. If they give an explanation for a no call we can still disagree with the call but it feels like at least some order is maintained in the sport since we have an official explanation for the ruling. “Oh, I see why they called it that way; I disagree, but I understand the call now.”
The fact that there were 3 very questionable non-calls/flags in a 3 min time frame makes it hard not to question (non-call holding, tipped pass/DPI, non-call targeting). If one of those gets missed, it is understandable. But all 3????

Yup. It will never change. That doesn’t bother me nearly as much as GT fans on this page covering for them.

Amen, brother.

It grates on my last nerve when some of us express frustration over how the refs missed calls that cost us the game and then our own fans accuse us of whining or making excuses. When something hurts this bad let a person vent and grieve a little bit. But, no, the game had not ended more than an hour before people are blaming Tech, saying we chocked, and ridiculing those of us who lamented the horrible officiating. That frankly sux. When people are hurting let them get over it before you rush in to say buck up. I would not want any of you guys hanging out at funeral to “console” the family. “Well, he had a bad heart, so you couldn’t expect to have him around for ever.”

It also grates for an even bigger reason. One of Tech’s greatest wins in COFH will forever be known as the Jasper Sanks bad fumble call because uga never quit talking about it. Meanwhile my news feed is filled this week with stories about uga’s courageous comeback win, and magnificent home winning streak, and what a powerhouse playoff team they are, because Tech fans can’t even manage a mild protest, and the controversy is over so quickly it’s as if it never happened.

But, man, people who don’t even follow football that closely know the name of Jasper Sanks.

What was the name of that guy again who targeted Haynes King?

I agree on the bad officiating, especially the missed tip on the PI. But what's nagging at me the most is we would have won in regulation if that FG kick had gone 2 feet to the right.

Doesn’t bother me in the least. Seriously. Players miss plays all the time. It’s part of the game. The team that makes the most plays and the fewest mistakes wins. That’s almost like a law of the jungle you can count on.

In this game I would be totally fine with Georgia winning if it were because they made more plays and fewer mistakes. I’m a Tech fan. I learned to accept that a long time ago.

But that’s not what happened. Georgia made more mistakes than Tech, from a missed field goal to outrageous holding infractions and an egregious spear tackle. Tech also made more plays, as all the stat lines indicate. So, our missed field goal doesn’t bother me. That’s stuff that is just part of the game like uga’s missed field goal.

But that’s just me.

Agreed. The missed field goal was within our control, so while it sucks I can accept it. What I can't accept is the officials repeatedly screwing Tech and allowing ugag to get away with penalties.

I hear all the time that refs have it so hard, that they have to see so much in real time and always get blamed/attacked. And that's all probably fair, but it makes me wonder, why on earth haven't we changed the system to make the refs' jobs easier? There's insane amounts of money on the line, why are there not 22 refs/analysts/whatever in a booth who each watch a specific player every play for penalties? There's no way you would have this many bad calls/no calls.

Personally, I think the rules also need to be enforced far more strictly as well and not continue this "just let em play" mentality. We keep hearing that there is pass interference and holding nearly every play, yet they aren't calling it most of the time which makes the outcome subject to the refs' discretion. Call all the penalties. Force teams to follow the rules. Force coaches to adjust their coaching to follow the rules instead of teaching players to try and get away with stuff. There was a time not long ago where so much as a hand on the back of a WR would draw pass interference and a handful of jersey was holding, but almost never do those qualify anymore. This stuff should be clear cut.

As for Jasper, that would never have been an issue if the coach had done the sensible thing and lined up for a field goal. Sanks fumble occurred in the middle of a mass of bodies and it was impossible for the officials to see what was really happening. IIWII

That missed field goal cost us the game in regulation. Once it went into overtime, it was UGA's game to lose.

It's almost as if there should be a group of officials that could look over a play and make sure the on field refs don't miss things like tipped balls or blatant targeting hits?

Btw I agree with your post. Just wanted to call out the fact that the replay system in place that's only job is to to check these things cause they can be missed on field just flat out refused to on Friday. You know in case anyone here didn't know that 😉

Yep, and I don't know how many people they have in that booth but clearly it's not enough if they are "missing" so many obvious penalties the rest of the country saw happen live. And why the booth is only allowed to flag very specific things like targeting? Why don't we allow them to flag holding or other penalties? Surely they saw the mutt OL yank our player backwards by his facemask, but they can't do anything about it?

I have mentioned this before but that missed FG was early in the game. It completely changed the strategy for both sides so who knows how the rest of the game would have played out if we had made it.
Here’s the deal to me. Misses happen. It’s the human factor. However, the officials are playing with a net. They get mulligans via replay. Players don’t. Miss a FG or critical tackle, it happens. Miss a call in the field, replay it and get it right.

They failed to even replay two absolutely critical replayable plays.

That seals it for me. The hand was officially in the scale. Period.

All true.

But, my point still stands. Most people in the state see it as a ref mistake not a coach or player mistake because Dooley, state government, and the SEC, all went ape 🦧 over it.

Wonder how this game will be remembered in the state? No I don’t. That was rhetorical.

Actually it’s not even the on field officiating that made me so mad. They can miss stuff. Reviews are called in from some remote league office. To me, that’s where the corruption lies in this whole thing. There were plenty of opportunities to review for targeting and tipped PI that just didn’t happen. That’s just horrendous.

I think someone here is very clearly a ref and seems to feel an overwhelming urge to simply defend refs at every turn. He doesn't seem to understand that's just as egregious as he thinks fans "blaming refs for losses" is.

And i think we all acknowledge we had chances to win despite the officials. But that doesnt mean they weren't objectively terrible when they were told needed to be.
What was the name of that guy again who targeted Haynes King?

You mean the guy that could've paralyzed himself by spearing King? I think Dan Jackson. He's now a legend since the refs decided to let him be one.

Definitely agree that it's funny this is viewed as a 'comeback'. The broadcast almost soiled themselves as it was happening.

FWIW, the only call I have real beef with is the very weak PI in the endzone, thrown by the sideline official and not the guy right behind it.

Replay showed no evidence of it being tipped, but it was definitely a ticky-tack PI that shouldn't have been called.

The targeting is...meh. I've seen that go both ways, the only egregious part is the booth not even doing a review.
