If you could build a defense using 11 of the GT greats and any base set...

Who would your Defensive Coordinator be?
Who would be your starters?
What would your base set be?

DC - Jon Tenuta

4-3 Scheme

SDE - Greg Gathers
DT - Vance Walker
DT - Adam Gotsis (Yep, thats right)
WDE - Marco Coleman
OLB - Key Fox
MLB - Keith Brooking
OLB - Nick Rogers
CB - Willie Clay
CB - Jemea Thomas
FS - Ken Swilling
SS - Dawan Landry

What say you?

Sorry, but a Georgia Tech all great defense without All American linebacker Lucius Sanford is just wrong. The guy is know for the "pancake" tackle.

My DE's are backwards. Marco would be WDE and Morgan would be SDE.

I would have to put Pat Swilling in there as well plus Ted Roof. Roof was the equivalent of a Joe Hamilton on D, a great impact player at the college level but without the measurable to play at the next level. But you are right - Lucious, Kent Hill, Edie Lee and Calvin Johnson were the type of players who changed games plus looked good getting off the bus as they say.

I also can't leave out Morgan Burnett...talent oozing from him. Could also be elite at CB. Love that kid.
Yes, like center, we've had a lot of good safeties. I put Ricardo ahead of Morgan because he was named ACC athlete of the year and because he and Bubba Hoats are two of the hardest hitters I've ever seen in the secondary. He was a charter member of the "Black Watch".

Got to go with Bud Carson at DC...........I'll put my 11 up later. There are a number listed but I got to ponder this a bit, lots of great players to choose from :)

Here's the thing about Attaochu, I don't think he would be a very effective 4-3 OLB. He's specialty is pass rushing and that's not the primary function of a 4-3 OLB.

We were thinking the same thing on Coleman Rudolph. But I held off because he was originally a DE iirc. I didn't want to hear the "he's not a DT" comments

He'd be perfect as the Sam OLB in Tenuta's 4-3.

Tenuta: 3-4
I know he ran a 4-3, but he could do the same thing running a 3-4, and I'd rather have an extra LB than DT from our alltime greats. We're LB U.

NT: Kevin Battle (Vance Walker first off bench)
DE: Derrick Morgan
DE: Greg Gathers (Michael Johnson first off bench)
OLB: Jeremiah Attaochu
OLB: Key Fox (Phil Wheeler first off bench)
ILB: Darryl Smith
ILB: Keith Brooking (Ted Roof or Lucious Sanford off bench)
CB: Morgan Burnette
CB: Jemea Thomas (Nick Young or Willie Clay off bench)
S: Ken Swilling
S: Travares Tillman (Dawan Landry or James Butler off bench)

I thought about the 3-4 for the extra LB too but I couldn’t think of many d-lineman who would be great 3-4 lineman.

GT had a good run of safeties through the 90's and early 2000's. There was a run where I believe 3 straight GT safeties eventually made All ACC.
We actually had a pretty good run of LBs as well...we were kinda like Penn State light for a while.

I like this list a lot. Gathers was the man before his kidney problem. Imagine 3rd and long with MJ sliding to OLB. Gathers, Morgan, Sneezy, and MJ all going after the QB...

Corner is the hardest position for me because we haven't had very few really good full time CBs for most of the time I've been watching (started watching the Jackets in 96). Word-Daniels is probably the best primary CB I can remember. Fortunately, with the pass rush this team would have, it wouldn't need much at CB.

Jason Bostic was good in his time.
