TM seems to be following the path of Synjyn Days where you just don’t know where to put him. Talented and versatile but always behind someone on the depth chart no matter what position he’s at.

I was most impressed by Lucas Johnson at the spring game, too, but I will admit that Coach Johnson is (for him) hyping up Jones.

I don't think fans got to see the "real" LJ yet. Dude was running for his life half of the time he was in there. He had 2nd string and 3rd string OLs protecting him. That's why CPJ wanted Jay Jones to play with the 1's...he wanted to give Jay playing time to see him in action, but he didn't want to make an existing injury worse by running for his life after every snap.

CPJ knows what he has. He's been doing this for over 30 years. He's going to play the guy that gives this TEAM the best chance to win.

No, I think the guy who could end up following the Days track is … Jay Jones. Jones's spring game performance reminded me a lot of Days when he was playing QB: he trusted his own running (no wonder, in both cases) to complete a play instead of handing off in the mesh or pitching at the edge. (This is why I mentioned this aspect of his performance in a previous post.) Days never mastered these aspects of the game in two years at QB and ended up running the ball for a living. I could see Jones doing the same thing; he likes his own wheels a bit too much and would do so in games next year, I'm betting.

I don't know this will happen, of course; perhaps Jones's spring game is not indicative. Coach has been encouraging about him, but it is hard to tell whether this is his real opinion or is intended to build Jones's confidence. I've down the same thing myself on a much - much - smaller stage.

I also think the guy who looked most ready at QB among the frosh in the spring game was Johnson. He looked just as lost as Jones on some plays and it was obvious that both were feeling their way. Still, he has every tool you would like to see in a Tech spread (™) QB.

If Jordan comes back all the way, I think both young men redshirt this year. If not, then it will be a battle royal as to who gets the job. Marshall is a solid no. 2, but both of Jones and Johnson have more physical gifts then he does. But … let's hope that doesn't happen, shall we?

That's a good point about Days. I'd forgotten that Days would bail out too early on plays and take off. That was pretty much the end of his playing career at QB for us.

I think people got enamored with CPJ's "he might be the quickest and fastest QB to play here" comment. CPJ didn't say "Jay Jones may be the best QUARTERBACK" to play for us. There's a difference. He may end being that, but there's a LOT of miles between the two statements. Let's remember, JeT for all his speed and quickness was also a REALLY good passer. We're at the point in this program where our QB needs to be good at running AND passing the ball. We can't have one dimensional QBs anymore because defenses have gotten really good at defending us. I would say our ability to pass the ball under JeT is a reason why 2014 and 2016 happened.

Said by CPJ about one of our QBs: "He just plays...he doesn't let anything bother him." "He's a good dual threat quarterback."

Guess who? Lucas Johnson. Let's not short shrift him on his ability to run either. CPJ doesn't recruit guys who can't run...as LJ's 70 yard run showed.

We'll see how all of this plays out this fall. Should be a fun battle.

Both Jones and Johnson redshirted in 2016. T Marshall has not redshirted as yet.

I admit I haven't seen the praise CPJ apparently heaped on JJ that some of y'all seem to have heard.

I've seen him say.... "guys can't seem to tackle him", "he just makes plays", "may be the quickest and fastest guy we have had at QB".

All of that is certainly high praise. I just don't infer that yet to indicate any kind of lead or separation among the competitors at QB.

They/we are parsing CPJ speak and taking the Qua "best ball" and Dedrick "future of GT" comments as high praise vs statements like "he's experienced". It's totally Ouija, but we are on a message board after all.

You still have to compare apples to apples with Jones and days. I could be wrong but I don't ever remember CPJ praising Days like he has Jones, nor were players on the team saying Days had a chance to start like they have about Jones. We shoulnt read much into how good he can or cant be based on one game where he had not practiced the whole week and almost didn't play because of injury and where the HC himself said that his performance was not normal for how he played the rest of the spring. The only thing I think any of us can say about him is he's atheletic and has a good arm, the other stuff we really have no clue about and that goes for all the QB's minus Jordan, we just haven't seen enough from any of them except for the obvious stuff, speed, arm, atheletic, etc. JMO.

Dedrick said "future of GT"? I haven't seen that one yet. Not doubting it, but where can that be found?

It doesn't take many Spring game plays to see JJ has some scat and moves that others don't. I can remember CPJ pushing JT when he was still a freshmen. He said he had ability and expected him to play - and he did some as a freshmen. CPJ does not pull punches or he would lose the respect of his players. JJ appears to be a special talent and will be the QB of the future. Could it take a year to polish that talent? You bet!!! But he is the future QB if that talent can be molded and in all likelihood it can. TQ and Lucas may have their places. TQ as a replacement to Jordan if he is hurt and also if JJ takes time to mold this year. Lucas as a passer in some instances. But JJ appears to be the future and CPJ comments echo those beliefs.
