How to be an 8 win Team

So in the cavalcade here and various other Social Media locations, I did some serious thinking about this while lifting weights. Here are three solutions, after all, as you read this, wins and losses are all that matters.

1. Convince the board to expand majors. Been said a ton and chances of this 0%

2. Get with Stanford, Vandy, Wake, and Duke. Appeal to the NCAA that the APR for us is unfair as it hurts our ability to recruit. We should be allowed to graduate say only 55% of our players. This could mean 4 or 5 really good players for us that today could not stay in Tech. They would flunk out after year 3 or go in the NFL, but it might mean 1 or 2 additional wins for us. Sort of like how O'Leary did it.

3. I call this the Elephant in the room.
The Schedule
We need to schedule more like our ACC brethren. Why do we play Clemson every year. The only other team with a schedule like ours is Florida State. When did Clemson become this rivalry? Move them to a regular rotation. And make sure that the years we play Notre Dame that Clemson is not on the schedule.

So for OOC, schedule 1 FCS and then schedule a Bowling Green, ULM, WKY etc. And never play them on the road. Gives us 7 home games, like Georgia and Alabama.

Stop playing the Tennessee, Auburn, Vandy etc. Tradition no longer matters and these games have no value for us. And don't play in those Labor Day things. No point.

Stop playing Georgia. What is the point as we have not been consistently competitive with them for 50 years. And don't point out 98,99,2000, if we had instant replay we lose 98 and 99. There is no value for either team. Hell Texas and Texas A&M quit playing.

Instead for the home folks play Georgia State and Georgia Southern every year. Always at home of course.

Look, Tradition doesn't matter any more. It is wins and losses and are you in or not. Heck, we are out of the CFP at this point, why keep playing, according to the pundits out there.

Well there it is, 8 wins, maybe 7 on a bad year, and 10 when the ball bounces the right way. I call it he Va Tech model.

Nice post, especially #3.... A conversation about scheduling got buried in another thread last week but its a key issue. Play San Jose State, UTEP, Florida International, UAB, Coastal Carolina, etc every year in the non-con. GTech should have 3 guaranteed non-con wins. When you have to play Georgia, Clemson, Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech, etc every year its pure lunacy to schedule anything tough in the non-con.

Some consider this masking a problem, but I would say it guarantees the players and fans a bowl game every year unless something goes really bad.

I think you’re confusing quantity and quality. I don’t give a crap about the number 8 if it’s against lesser competition.

Move Clemson to rotation...maybe. The ACC scheduling model definitely isn’t fair. But honestly I’d rather keep the cross overs but make it so that only division games count towards division championship. That makes everyone equal.

Drop geogia...HELL NO. That part of tradition matters. Jesus, why not just drop to FCS for God’s sake.

We have no control with playing Clemson, that’s on the ACC. No way we should stop play UGA either. I’m fine with scheduling easier out of conference games though, most schools do that.

I also wish we would find out what the top 3 or 5 degrees are that student athletes go after, that we don’t have, and find a way to add them.

Besides that I think the new resources show that we care and will eventually help us in getting better recruits. I’ve said it and still believe it, if we could add just 3 studs a year it would help us in a big way.

I assume you are a 1984 graduate. That makes you my age. We are dinosaurs in our way of thinking. College football tradition is dying. The playoffs have done that. People in their 30 and 20s don't see Tech like us, it is all about winning.

Glad someone mentioned it. Yes, our scheduling is ridiculous. We should be scheduling like VT or Wake. And, yes, we shouldn't play Clemson every year. Or - maybe - Ugag. I'm less convinced about that; shoot, we beat them down there in 2016. I'm not convinced that they've become the new Bammer either. Still, every other year would be useful, I think.

I've said this before: Johnny Vaught won more SEC games then any coach in Ole Miss history and an MNC buy playing 9 stiffs and Bama. In the long run, people look at your won - lost, not who you played. We need to adjust this part of the program more then any other. Provided, that is, that we can get other schools to cooperate.

I like number 1 but like you said zero chance

as number 2 they would not do that for only a few teams , but I don't remember players going to the nfl early while O'Leary was here and I don't think he had 55% graduate may want to check I heard one time it was only in the high 30's ( but i'm not sure )

and on the last I would rather lose to Auburn and not someone like USF ( but that's me some may not feel that way )

Every other year against Georgia would be fine to me....

On those off years schedule 4 guaranteed-win home games against FBS teams and, if running the option, generate interest by rushing for over 500 yards in every one of those games. Then enter conference season with some confidence, in a groove, and with some hype.

8 wins against that type of schedule are as meaningless as it gets, in my book. I'd lose interest playing those teams.

And yet that is what the Alabama and Georgia's of the world do. Tired of playing one of the top 10 - 20 toughest schedules in football and then everyone expects us to be top 25 in the nation. We have enough constraints on resources to add another key constraint. Keep playing Georgia, but like Coloradojacket says, ease up some on the scheduling. Our ACC schedule is tough enough for me to never lose interest.

Let’s just move to the AAC and win 9-11 games a year

Forget dropping the permanent rival. We should have moved to the Atlantic when Md left and UL taken our spot. Then we would have Uva as a rival and got to play fsu and clem (the two closest schools).

We lose or struggle with our OOC matchups, even against less than great P5 or non P5 teams, somewhat regularly. Not even counting bowls. Scheduling isn't going to change anything. Kansas, BYU, Middle Tennessee State, USF. You could even throw UT in there last year for how bad their season went. I'm not even counting nail biters against Southern and Tulane. Saying easy OOC games is a guaranteed win for us is not really true.

I think we should play each year until we have 3 losses. Then, cancel the reset of the season.

Good grief. Not only no, but HELL NO to all of that garbage. We can compete by recruiting nationally and finding players who want what we have to offer. Our recruiting staff is miniscule. We're adding four but it's about fourteen short of what we need to add. Quit worrying about facilities, coaches, and all that and RECRUIT.

Edited: Okay, re-read your post and understand you were being sarcastic. My bad.
