In 1964 Michigan State was voted #20 in the Coaches Poll even though they had a 4-5 record and Illinois was voted #18 in the 1962 Coaches Poll even though they had a 2-7 recordI think we would have beat them in 1952 too and put an end to the nonsense of a 9-0 team claiming they were better than a 12-0 team.
I was hoping we would get them in the OB too.Nope and I wish we would play them again. The excitement I had when I thought we were playing them in the Orange Bowl was epic. I called and text every Sparty fan I knew to talk **** and then we got Miss St...........

The Polls have been screwed up for a long time in 1960 the AP Poll ranked 4-4-1 Purdue #19 and 9-0 Yale #14 and in 1959 5-5 Notre Dame was ranked #17
They beat no teams that were ranked either. We crushed # 6 Duke (lol), # 7 Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl, and edged # 12 Alabama.
Duke was no laughing matter in football during that time period. They beat no teams that were ranked either. We crushed # 6 Duke (lol), # 7 Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl, and edged # 12 Alabama.
I don't doubt Duke was stout back then. Just funny to look back on now.
He turned Tennessee down flat because Fulmer was his friendIt was funny in the context of Tech sharing a national championship with a team that won only 9 games none of which were against a ranked opponent. Unfortunately, Duke has become a problem again with Coach Cutliffe. I really think Tennessee made a big mistake not hiring him when they had the chance. IMHO
Sorry SidewaysI stand corrected, again, by the ubiquitous MikeJacket. Son, you have got to quit doing this to me. It's humiliating.
Sorry Sideways
Given the headwinds from the Georgia Board of Reagents and other recruiting limitations, those four national championships along with the bowl wins is truly remarkable.
