Ole Miss has a far better quarterback, a true gunslinger, and wide receivers who will take your lunch money if you so much as peek into the backfield. They are a fringe playoff team playing at a high level.

You see coaches talk about players not making a trip for disciplinary reasons but this is the first time I have ever seen a coach not make a trip and it be mentioned on a post game show as though he was a player. Strange times indeed.

At 5-4, we are EXACTLY where all the savants predicted we would be. Are we looking sharp, like a well-oiled machine? Of course not. That's why we are 5-4 and right where we were expected to be at this point in the season.

Going forward, we can expect a loss against Miami followed by a big win at home against NC State (to get bowl eligible) followed by another loss in Athens to end the regular season at 6-6. The outcome of the Lackluster Middling Bowl depends on who our opponent is, of course.

NEXT year, we need to stay on our upward trajectory by winning at least 7 games. After that, I'd really like to see us winning eight games as a floor consistently. That will depend on recruiting and who's calling the plays on both sides of the ball two years from now.

But for now, while recognizing that 5-7 is still possible, 6-6 is what I have been expecting for this season. That appears to be the likely outcome, IMO.

5-7 is not just possible, it is now even money. NC State is more than capable of beating this team. They are not great or even good, or even average just mediocre like us and Virginia Tech. The usual ACC middle of the pack and lower teams that infest the conference like fleas on a hound dog.

Very similar to 2015 in that regard. Funny how it seems as though all of them are on offense.

Their ranking will probably drop some due to the performance of our defense today. How anyone could have watched the game and then want to undermine our defensive performance is puzzling. For one thing, stats do not tell the whole story. Anyone who has watched the Hokies this year knows they are at best an average offense. Their best game was against Miami and they were flat out cheated by the officials of a win in that game. When I see our defense pressuring a team like Miami or UGA and sacking the quarterbacks then I will change my mind. I will give Virginia Tech this accolade. They lost 3 games by a total of 10 points Vanderbilt, Rutgers, and Miami and as noted they were robbed against Miami.

The less than 150 rushing continues to speak to our O line struggles. My eyes judgment is that we've been losing the line of scrimmage too much lately.

Losing turnover margin statistically does lead to more losses than not.

I've only read a little over half the postings so I hope what I say has not already been posted.

During the second qt I started thinking Key would come out with Philo starting the second half, very disappointed he did not do so, as has been said it was so obvious ZP was not taking us anywhere. Beginning to see what each of our coaches are about.

Going forward I would let coach CW call plays and run the offense. Did he not do that some in '22 interim period? CBF gets tunnel vision it appears to me, could not believe on that last 4th down try he ran the ball into the middle where they had failed so much. He seems to have zero imagination. Seems so predictable. What a contrast with what the VT play caller did today. Even when we have HK it's the same few things over and over.
Seems like I rememberr him saying something about telling his HC when he was OC against GT he was going to run the ball every play, sort of telling to me about his mind set. I don't know a lot about it, just my amateur observations. Dropped balls certainly mess up a lot of things beyond the dropped balls. We make a lot of mistakes it seems to me.

That maybe can be true if they can help you all or most of the season. It would be stupid to burn it on our last game that we have an infinitesimal chance to win.

Last year I said a few times “I don’t care that much about the ints, especially since a bunch came in chunks when we were down in the second half and he had to try to win it himself” in defense of King.

I feel vindicated now since our offense, even in the games with him, has been scaring nobody. Dink and dunk and rack up stats and chew time but then don’t score a ton of points.

We have a few weapons but we try to smush them into an uber conservative game plan.

I think there’s a reason that a lot more teams without dominant OLs go pass-happy than run-happy. We don’t have the personnel or a Paul Johnson to scheme ourselves to victory playing conservatively.

We need more options - and just more attempts/reps - through the air that aren’t screens or slow-developing deep downfield plays.

Well maybe they aren't, either (except on paper, like FSU). They came in #99 in the country against the run.

This was a tale of two sides of the line of scrimmage. The DL was stellar, and the OL was abysmal.

Yep. We desperately needed a touchdown at that point and to run such a vanilla play that is not having much success tells me our play calling is way too conservative. Not sure if that falls on, Key or Faulkner, maybe both. We seem reluctant to be innovative in the red zone.
