Got curious and looked up the history of helmet logos. U. of Chicago paved the way. The first logo I could find, and perhaps the only college logo on back of the helmet was the U. of Chicago's in 1921:Cool. This isn’t the 1950s though, and we aren’t wearing throwbacks. Nobody wore a logo on their helmet back then, it wasn’t special to Dodd’s GT teams. Nobody had thought about putting anything besides paint on the helmets yet. Then one day, somebody decided it would be cool to put a logo on there that would show up on TV cameras and fans in the stands could see. These gimmicky ghosted logos and whatever you wanna call this look ridiculous, and we’re getting flamed for it. The only people that like it are Tech fans that respond “” to everything. I haven’t liked our silly helmet designs all year, but we’ve won some games in them. Hope we win Friday.
Then the U. of C. had the logo on top of the helmet in 1938:
First full word to appear on a helmet was on the Florida helmet in 1941:
I couldn't find anything on the first side helmet logo in college football. The first logo to appear on a pro helmet was on the Rams in 1947, painted by a former art major who was on the team:
