USC went 7-3 in the 1966 regular season and lost 14-13 to 8-2 Purdue(who had QB Bob Griese)in the Rose Bowl.

Do you recall how good Notre Dame was in 1966? USC was their last chance to impress the voters and I have no idea if the 1st team was playing late in the game. But, I doubt if Terry Hanratty was taking the last snap.

It helps a lot with the College Football Poll voters when you're Notre Dame The same situation happened in 1977 when 11-1 Notre Dame won the National Title even though they lost to a 6-5 Ole Miss team who was crushed by 11-1 Alabama.

I remember that game. Griese played his heart out, but ND had too much talent. IIRC, Griese led the Boilermakers on a late TD drive.

Ah the good ol' days when the MNC was purely a beauty contest! Now it's just as bad but the beauty pageant elects 4 teams that square off on the field.

They were one of my most disliked teams of all time (alongside UGA). Mainly because they always got excellent pre-season rankings like Ohio State and always seemed to get good press, no matter how well their teams were doing. Also, Marist used the Notre Dame fight song (Marist was our main rival, since many of us went to the same elementary school and played little-league sports together). So, the anti-Marist bias kind of bled over into anti-ND bias. I also have theological differences with the Popish religion, so though I don't hate the ND football team like I used to, I don't support the institution.

Dislike immensely -
1975 - We flew to south bend, had our 45 minute jog around in the stadium, then bused over to Elkhart, Indiana where we stayed at an "old-style" Holiday Inn Motel that had been completely covered by a roof. There was a putt putt course next to the pool that was all under the roof. That night, several of us were playing putt putt (Kim King was playing with us) and, because we had a meeting and dinner at 6:00, I asked this "70ish" year old lady standing next to us what time it was. She looked at me and said, "You go to hell!" Wow.

The next day, the buses are headed back to the stadium and we were passed by a pick up with a deer tied to their hood (they're in a pick up, why strap him to the hood?) When the truck was even with the lead bus, the truck eased over on us a couple of times and then took off. Our ISP escort moved ahead and pulled them over. By the time we got to them, the ISP were pulling them out the windows. The bus driver told us that nobody liked nd fans, especially the ISP.

This was the Rudy game but Tech was so depleted by injuries that it should not have been as close as it was. In the stadium, I really admired Colonel Hardison's composure and ability to ignore the nd fans behind our bench. I don't know why they felt the need to harass him like they did.

1977 - Flew into south bend and went directly to the stadium. They met us at the gate and told us that, because of the forecast, there was a tarp on the field and we would not be able to use it. They said we could wait an hour until after nd's practice and then use their practice field. Pepper told them that we weren't waiting and we changed into our sweats and chased the students away from the grassed areas in front of the library (TD Jesus). Nothing really organized, just some touch football and offensive linemen taking turns being quarterback or receiver.

The next day, as our bus pulls in at the stadium, a 75ish year old security guard is banging on the side of the bus and giving us the finger at the windows. I don't want to talk about what happened in the stadium but several times when they scored, we got the same gesture from their sideline.

In 1974, Ara seemed straight up and nice. They downgraded in class when they hired Devine.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread by I just came across this interview with Sean Astin and he directly addresses the "Rudy was offsides" sidebar. I found this hilarious because I wore my "Rudy Was Offsides" T shirt to the last two games up their, one of which we won.

Interesting footnote, the game sequences at the end of the film, where Rudy got his sack, were filmed at halftime of the Boston College game in 1992.
