I am interested in seeing all the transfers, and really interested in the LB. We know our RB’s will shine. I think we have some kids who will step up at WR. In general I am excited every year at this time about everything. As I said when it gets to the point I am not pumped up in August it will be time to move on.

Sims improvement, OL portal transfers, multiple players returning from injury, Cochran playing, another year of experience from a previously green group, weight and conditioning program upgrades, crap my fingers are getting tired from typing. Someone else take over please!

The only area of this team that I expect to be worse than 2020 is punting. Everything else looks better on paper.

3 major bugaboos last year:
1. turnovers --> expected with true freshman QB and COVID limited practices. Statistically we're likely better off even with simple regression to the mean
2. kicking game --> we have Cimaglia and everyone else, and we aren't hampered by the same personnel grouping/pods/social distancing restrictions during practice
3. penalties --> especially on OL, starting a true freshman and having a center who just learned the position for the first time in a spring will make a big difference. In 2019 we were very good overall in penalties and not so in 2020. If nothing other than regression to the mean, we should be better at this without even having to work on it

OL -
Obviously there were losses and we were fortunate in 2020 from a health standpoint on the line, but the incoming transfers & progression of existing players learning a new system, again especially considering we had a first time center suddenly responsible for identifying the defense and calling out shifts in the protection; all point in the favorable direction, perhaps in a big way

QB -
Obvious reason to expect progress after a true freshman year. Talk about Sims from staff in the off-season validates this. Lose Gleason, gain the Temple transfer and Peery. Likely a net positive in the backup spot as well.

RB -
Lose no one. Healthy Gibbs. Better OL. FEAST

WR -
Lose Camp which is very significant. Lose Brown who was a player although disappeared mid-season and transferred. Gain McGowan, several talented freshman, and another off-season to get better. This one is hard to be definitive about, but on paper we look in better shape to me.

TE -
Lose no one. Top 2 guys are healthy now.

DL -
Some losses, but huge additions and a healthy Clayton. Chimedza returning from injury (uncertain how ready he is, but he was our best DT in 2019). Faced a lot of challenges with keeping personnel on the field in 2020. There is a lot of transition here so more uncertainty, but especially considering how bad it was last year it's almost certain to be a big improvement this year. Also validated by the buzz around the team

LB -
Lose Curry, gain Eley. Meiguez out for season. Knight back to QB (maybe), lose Howard (not a contributor at LB). 4* Tatum joins the fold. Again, more uncertainty from this group. Curry was polarizing. Very good player with some significant limitations which won't be the case with Eley. Eley's role on the team has been made abundantly clear already. We will definitely be more dynamic here, I think a good deal better.

DB -
Too many losses and gains to review. Looking like a healthy Tre and Tariq. All the main starters are back along with a stack of talented guys with opportunity to take a leap forward.

1. Offensive Line. Our OL was ranked 123rd / 127 teams last year. This year we add Cochran, Kirby, and Pendley. Williams has a year of experience under his belt. Many of the younger guys should be ready to contribute as well. It's hard to imagine that we won't see a substantial improvement here.

2. Penalties, turnovers. With the Spring emphasis on reducing dumb penalties, you can assume we will have some improvement there. With turnovers, a better OL and a more seasoned Sims at QB should cut those down.

3. Place kicking. Even if Cimaglia is just adequate we will be drastically improved.

Knight is back to LB.

BIGGEST source of optimism for me: the OL. Cochran and Williams are two guys I’m comfortable saying will be drafted. Kirby and Johnson might as well. If true that’s 4 NFL OL starting for us. The RBs are our strength, so the top RB room in the ACC + potentially 4 NFL OL = dominant run game.

I’m excited about the trenches. Both sides of the ball have maybe 8 guys each that I could see starting.
These two areas are where we have consistently been inferior to our competition. Poor play from both derails any possible positive trajectory.

Made XPs & FGs!!
Oh, My Dear Lord, yes! If we can improve here to normal it may mean two more wins. Let's hope we can find someone between Cimaglia and the other new kids and finally get the OL to block correctly, things will be much better almost immediately.

I think that will happen and it sure will help.

I have no idea what we have.
Nor does anybody else either if we are being honest. All of our players, and everyone else's, did come highly recommended as a highly regarded coach once said. I think there has been enough infusion of talent to be optimistic though that this season will be much better than what we have seen over the last several years.

I do have a hunch or gut feel that Bama, OSU and Clemson will be good. Not sure about anyone else however,

I think we had a lot of mistakes last year that were self-inflicted and most are easily correctable. The team is older, bigger, stronger, and more practiced at nearly every position, including a lot of the backups. And for every individual player that improves, he improves those around him. A rising tide lifts all ships.

Looking at last season, I'd say we had 5 games we were in and could have won - we managed 3. This season, I see 8-9 possible wins, so hopefully we can get at least 5 or 6.
