Just curious what others think. Tech was supposedly going to play either Michigan State or Mississippi State in the Orange Bowl based on the final rankings prior to the Bowl games. That appeared to me at the time to be a double bind situation with regard to getting ranked higher than 8th or 9th in the country because it not only required Tech winning against their bowl opponent but also "winning" against their non-bowl opponent. If both Michigan State and Mississippi State had lost their bowl games this year and Tech had beaten one of them, where would Tech be ranked? And which of the two teams would it have been better for Tech to beat in that scenario?

In terms of ranking, it would've been better to beat Michigan State since the Big Ten did so well in bowl games otherwise. Plus that would've made MSU's only losses to the two national championship teams and GT.

Beating Miss State more affirmed Miss St's slide than GT's rise in the view of most.

Not bad for a bunch of 2 and 3 stars.

Just some numbers to think about. Either the rankings are complete bunk or we are the biggest over-achievers in college football.

Rivals recruiting rankings over the last 5 years:

Year..........ranking..........avg star rating
'10..................43.........................3.17
'11...................41.........................2.91
'12...................57.........................3.00
'13...................85.........................2.71
'14...................47.........................2.95

5 yr avg.........55........................2.95

Imagine what we might have done with Ugags roster:

5 yr avg...........10..........................3.52

Great post. This cannot be over emphasized. A team ranked 55th in talent finishes 8th in the nation. Wonderful job by the staff and the players.
