Remember how his supporters said it wasn’t really his defense and didn’t count because he wasn’t on the sidelines....and that was a TFG defense, too.
This is probably my second favorite one after the Citrus Bowl.1999 Gator Bowl victory over Notre Dame. Arguably O'Leary's best team playing at its best. We had a big, loud crowd (who says we don't travel). Finished ranked #9 that year.
FIFY1972, my freshman year at Tech. Eddie McAshan had been suspended for the Liberty (?) Bowl and the back-up qb, future USAF Col Jim Stevens, lead the team to a victory over Johnny Majors coached Iowa State.
Citrus Bowl in 1991 and watching William Bell dive over the goal line.1991 Citrus Bowl, Orlando, FL, against the University of Nebraska with Dr. Tom Osborne as HC. The media darling that year was Colorado who had a loss, a tie, and another loss that was negated by a 5th down at the GL. Yet, they were ranked ahead of us, standing undefeated at 10-0-1.
We beat Nebraska handily that day and my future wife and I were there to see it. My top moment as a GT alumnus/fan and bowl moment as well.
Nebraska HC Osborne, as the only common opponent, openly stated that GT was the better team. His vote in the coach’s poll was the difference.
Very fun story!1965 Gator Bowl.
Tech has had perhaps bigger and better bowl victories since then but I was a young impressionable kid. The air was clear, the colors looked brilliant to me, and I had not yet learned to dread things going wrong in a Tech game. The Texas Tech running back (Anderson, who later turn pro) was the pregame talk of all the pundits and everyone seemed to fear him. An unknown sophomore running back, Lenny Snow, outclassed him as Tech’s MVP for the game and stole the show. I remember little about the game except that both teams seemed explosive. Whenever I got nervous that Texas Tech was moving the ball too easily, Ga Tech came up with an interception or fumble recovery.
Final Score: Georgia Tech 31 Texas Tech 21
Jim Stevens!1972, my freshman year at Tech. Eddie McAshan had been suspended for the Liberty (?) Bowl and the back-up qb lead the team to a victory over Johnny Majors coached Iowa State.
And the cherry on top, we beat Kiffin.I feel like the 2014 Orange bowl has been the best in my Lifetime.
My Favorite to watch was the 2012 Sun Bowl. We dominated that game and It's the only time We've played them since my birth .
Also Verne on the call was cool
I would say that attending the 2010 Orange Bowl game was my least favorite bowl memory. I too was born and raised in the Midwest, and that game was the coldest I've ever been. I've been to Lambeau where the kickoff temp was in the single digits and I was not as cold as I was that night. This is probably my second favorite one after the Citrus Bowl.
Other fav and not so favs.
ACC CG against Clemson.
CarQuest Bowl against WV. Really fun game.
On the down side.
Against LSU in the Peach Bowl
Against Iowa in the Orange Bowl. I was born in WI, and that is still one of the colder games i've ever been to. Iowa's defense was fantastic that night.
FWIW, my coldest game in attendance was as a child going to the Packers-Vikings game in 1978 at Lambeau. Dad (a Green Bay native) got me out of Sunday School early so we could make the relatively short drive to Green Bay since it was snowing. Game ended in a 10-10 OT tie. It was cold and windy. I remember having the little heat packs, they were good for about 5 min max.
My favorite memory cannot be limited to just one. There are two for different reasons. The first was 1965 Gator Bowl. Tech vs Tech or Georgia Tech vs. Texas Tech. Donnie Anderson was the star for Texas Tech as a Heisman Trophy winner that year. Consequently, Texas Tech was favored. My dad, mother, cousin, and uncle were all there half expecting to see the great running back run wild. A great running back did run wild, it was Lenny Snow for well over 100 yards. The second is the Citrus Bowl against Nebraska. A buddy of mine and I went down a day early to play tennis and as we walked to the stadium this big bus with red and white coloring comes up and a huge bunch of Nebraska fans file out. Not a one of them was under 60.we are TWO WEEKS AWAY from the Yellow Jackets 47th bowl game. Tech has a 26-20 record all time in bowl games. The Jackets' 47 appearances is tied with Auburn for 15th all time. Tech has played in five of the six current NY6 bowls (the Fiesta is the only one we haven't appeared in).
This is also the EIGHTH decade in a row that the Yellow Jackets have played a bowl game in. (you could argue tenth as the 1940 Orange Bowl was for the 1939 season)
So what's your favorite GT bowl memory? I'm young so I never saw the very very best of our bowl triumphs but I've seen some that are enjoyable.
2014 Orange Bowl was super fun. Wasn't there in person but watched from home with my family and some family friends. CPJ's crowning moment.
2016 Gator/TaxSlayer is a special memory for me because while most of our fans were in Jacksonville, I was at the GT-UNC basketball game watching shootyhoops upset the eventual national champions, and they kept showing the bowl highlights on the scoreboard in between timeouts to update the crowd on the score.
Last year's win in Tampa was fun, I hope we do something similar in two weeks.
share some nostalgia and memories below!
This was mine. After being so bad when I was in school (‘92-‘97) it was a great win. We chartered a party boat with about 100 people to tailgate before the game - some of you may have been on it with me!1999 Gator Bowl victory over Notre Dame. Arguably O'Leary's best team playing at its best. We had a big, loud crowd (who says we don't travel). Finished ranked #9 that year.
I loved whenever CPJ said to an SEC team, “See what I’m going to do every time you disrespect my team.”Well for me, the funniest bowl memory was the 2016 Gator Bowl verses Kentucky. The buildup in Jacksonville leading up to the game was the Big Blue Nation descending unto the city. The Cats had not been to a bowl in 5 years. The Cats fans thought with all of the excitement from the fan base, their team would be willed to victory. I will say the Big Blue Nation showed up in a major way. Unfortunately, their enthusiasm was short lived after PJ Davis scooped up a Pat Gamble QB strip and returned it for a TD on the third play of the game. Paul's offense was just chewing 6 yard run after run . Several UK lineman started getting injured ( not due to cut blocks.) . Finally, Coach Stoops came out and started yelling at the Tech bench and Paul ( standing at mid field ) let him have it. If that wasn't funny enough, the Refs screwed up the sequence on Tech's last possession before the half ( in Tech's favor.) The Big Blue Nation and Coach Stoops were out of control with anger. They had a right to be. So Paul took the gift and sent Harrison Butker out with one second left to kick a 51 yard FG which he made. Those UK fans and Coach Stoops were about to explode and we ran into the locker room like we owned them. Rumor has it that Stoops turned over a water cooler right in front of the officials inside the locker room. It was a great day to be a Jacket!
To be fair, he had already departed for Gainesville. The other one. And probably to suit his character, or lack thereof, traits, I'm sure he did nothing to prepare his successor or the team for what faced them....and that was a TFG defense, too.
I was about to say it was still his D, but there was no need. Well said!To be fair, he had already departed for Gainesville. The other one. And probably to suit his character, or lack thereof, traits, I'm sure he did nothing to prepare his successor or the team for what faced them.
If he had stayed, it might have been worse than 452 rush/577 total. We might not have punted at all if TFG were running Dan Mullen's D that night.
Weather was PERFECT that day!Well for me, the funniest bowl memory was the 2016 Gator Bowl verses Kentucky.
