Doryan’s Impact: Over or Under 10 MPG? Place Your Bet!

It seems pretty clear that we are loaded with talented guard options, and that the front court is where our question marks are at.

One player in particular, Doryan Onwuchekwa, is very interesting. With a little more than a week until tip-off, let's have some fun.

I'm curious who is with me and who is with LNJ. Play along and take a little poll...

Sidenote - I'll donate an extra $100 if DO doesn't avg. 10+ in the non-conference as well.

With the tight seal CDS keeps on the program there is no way to have a real clue besides a guess at what we think based on HS play and the rest of our roster.

My hope is that he is good enough to be impactful enough to garner 10+ minutes because he is that good and not because the other Bigs are that bad.

Baye Ndongo needs cover, particularly on defense. Can’t keep
getting into early foul trouble and becoming lost to the team’s offense. That was Ebe’s role, but unfortunately he proved to be a liability at both ends. So 10+ minutes per game will easily go to Doryan, Ryan &/or Ibrahim. CDS will play freshman. Guessing Doryan has more talent & skill than the other two and will see lots of action. I say yes.

When Nait come off a screen and drops a pass to Baye rolling towards the basket, the defense collapses, and Baye finds Doryan Onwuchekwa wide open in the corner, what are you screaming in McCamish or at your TV as you rise to your feet and hold your middle, ring, and pinky fingers over your head? Fill in the blank: "PULL IT ______"

Doryan is 1 syllable too many in my opinion...D-O/DeeOhh? Chek?

I hoping Doryan is setting the screen and rolling and kicking it out to Baye, who shoots 38% from the corner. Yes, I can dream.

My vote was for the over for two reasons.

1. Doryan is the most talented 5 we have on the roster IMHO. In order for this team to succeed I believe Mutombo’s role needs to be that of a rim protector in matchup specific lineups.
2. I expect to see a lot of Baye at 5 and Luke at the 4 with the perimeter of Kowacie/Javian/NTG. I see DO at 12-14 mpg and RM around 6-8.
3. DO (IIRC) has some range and could be a weapon when CDS wants to go five out.
4. I believe it behooves us to keep Baye’s MPG static at roughly 28 per game. He’s a banger and I worry about his longevity

Defensive rebounding is our biggest need. Opponents killed us last year with 2nd chance points by getting offensive (really) rebounds. If he can do that, we will be a much better team.

At this point he needs lots of playing time to be ready for ACC play.

He’s definitely a work in progress, but I liked what I saw from him. First off, he’s huge but also very fluid. His frame has plenty of room for muscle. That’s probably going to be his biggest weakness as a freshman (strength).

Tonight, he played 11 mins and pulled down 7 boards. He got lost a few times on D, and he allowed them to get into his body a few times on the drive, but that’s understandable with it being his first collegiate game.

As he gets more confident and the game slows down, his game should grow.

He clearly will be a much better player in March than in November. The next few games will be important for him to get use to the speed and athletic ability at the college level.

All 3 freshmen looked, well like freshmen tonight.

The experienced guys all looked much better as one would expect. McCollum, O’Brien and Powell are clearly experienced players who are very nice additions to the team this season.

Good first game.
