Defensive Breakdown vs. WF

Here is a pretty in depth analysis of the missed penalties. I don't know how many false starts were missed just in this summary - maybe 13? You can count. Pretty sad sad day for the Refs in this game.

After the 3rd or 4th false start that wasn't called, I thought "maybe it's not a false start and I'm overreacting". After watching the replays, I realized I wasn't overreacting enough.

I saw us send 5 and 6 guys on blitzes several times and we never could get anyone free. The only blitzes that seem to work are from the outside, or when a DE shoots upfield and the LBer attacks that vacated space. I'm not sure why we are so bad blitzing inside but it's really frustrating to watch the other team consistently pick up the blitzers.

I see Simmons and St. Amour as the only D linemen who are making the guy across from them work. I wish I would see Keeshun utilize his speed to the outside and then bend the same way Simmons and St. Amour are. And once the tackle overcommits show him outside and step inside. Or step inside and spin outside. Almost every single play I see Keeshun try to bullrush his guy and force him back into the QB. That's just not his game.

I'm not sure how we practice but defensive line just has to get more violent. I would never ever call holding on the scout team, and if anything I'd coach them to hold and expect my D line to fight through it. Make them practice as hard or harder than the real thing.

Edit to add: While they aren't usually beating their man in pass rush, our DTs get a solid B+ on holding the line or forcing the LoS back even with double teams.

  • What scares me the most about our defense is our LB's penchant for overpursuing and leaving the cutback wide-open. Against better backs (Clemson, VT, UGA) we're gonna get killed. It's hard enough to contain their weapons as it is, we can't be giving up 35 yard runs when we should've stopped it for 2.
‘09 COFH comes back to haunt me after reading this.

I’m a man of the people, so I appreciate the feedback.

Glanton or BJS would get my gameball. Glanton was my Taquon of 2 years ago. I saw him dominate in the spring game and immediately thought he be an impact player for us in ‘16. Glad to see step. Now al of a sudden we have some good depth on a DT with Glanton/Branch and KCH/Adams

ballin, we are also making more pressure calls and the DT can penetrate a spot now vs not. This has helped IMO. We are walking S down a ton more for fits; and I think x stunts and de/dt combos are helping a ton. We are slanting alot more now....thats helping.

In my view, its a combination of all. Kid is a year older, but Roof is helping the DL out now finally :)

@Ibeeballin is this true? ... the second half had less LB blitzes and the DE moved more outside. The blitzes sent where more from the DBs.

This helped keep the LB from getting washed out of the play and the DE limited the direction of the rusher.

I’m not really sure on the number of blitz difference btw halves. I’ll look again. I just saw better effort in the 2nd half compared to the 1st

It sure does feel that. I also think the personnel is little bit better than last year too. Whether it is experience or the replacement, I think we are a better DLine than some of the past ones we’ve had

could be, but its amazing how different a D call looks when the player goes the right vs the wrong way etc....we could have had some of that too.

Ha! Good Nature + Good Nuture is the best, obviously ... as long as guys aren't flunking out or transferring out for whatever reason we're OK.

I wonder how much of it also rests on watching film and game prep. For example, if Wake is lined up on one hash in a particular formation they always ran towards the opposite hash, so Roof calls for a slant in that direction. Does that seem to be the case?

To that end, there's a great end zone cam shot where Wake's DL slants left toward the boundary and PJ called a dive to the right and we ended up gashing them for a big gain.

OK I looked at the second half more closely.

1 LB blitzing along with help from a DB either coming up to the LOS or blitzing for run support. The extra DB coming up for run support resulted in more passes.

There were more disguised LB blitzes with players stepping up to a gap and then pulling back.

I did not see many plays where the DL would cross. I saw one and I am into the 4th Q.

I do see 1 DE split out wider and heading for the option back, but I need to check to see if that happened in the first half.

GT shut down the run game and was able to limit the passing game in the second half.

Loved that we got even for the cheap shot. Love that the defense has a little swagger now! I'm on the BJS hype train!
