DeAndre Smelter: 2015 NFL Draft Sleeper of the Year?

I liked Smelter from the first time I saw him play. Big physical receiver with great athletic skills. If he drops anywhere past late 2nd round he will be a big time steal for a NFL team.
This.

I'm betting the lack of attention on him is due to some clubs watching him closely and hoping to pick him up later than he should go.

I'd love for the Falcons to get him. With him and Julio with Roddy in the slot, the Falcons offense would be even more terrifying to opposing defenses. But they need defense help way too badly

If we could have just gotten Attaochu last year I'd love for us to get Smelter this year. Although the way it's going so far we'll have an early first round pick for a pass rusher (Randy Gregory please) and could get Dre in the second round early.

But of course this is what I want, and since the Falcons have spent my whole life leaving my expectations unfulfilled, I won't even get my hopes up.

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing them get Gurley in the first

I would love that too, although I think we could trade back (assuming we are in the 5-10 range, **** we're terrible and I hate conceding we'll get this bad of a pick) and still get him at around pick 10-15 just because of perceived RB value. I personally think he could have started for an NFL team last year and on talent alone should be a Top 5 pick.

It's all going to come down to Smelter's 40...which looks like it improved from last season. I think DT is more of the comparison than Calvin, but Smelter doesn't have DT's explosiveness. Both guys are devastating blockers, and natural receivers with their hands. DBs just get physically blown out of his catch radius because he's so strong. He kinda reminds me of Anquan Boldin. Not super fast, but finds a way to get open, and catches everything thrown his way.

His draft placement will depend largely on who else at WR declares for the draft, but he's definitely getting drafted. If he can run in the 4.4 range, he's probably going to get drafted in the upper rounds.

Falcons really need help in the trenches. I hate we didn't take Sneezy last year, but I don't think Smelter is the right pick for the Falcons this year.

Of course, if we are going to pick guys like Hageman with our second round pick...

Agreed. I think Boldin is a great comparison. I don't know what Smelter's 40 time is right now or what it is going to be come NFL combine time, however, he is effectively fast and hard to cover. He will not most likely be the kind of receiver used to stretch the field at the next level, but he will be a force. He is physical and can move really well in short spaces. He is a really hard guy to jam because he is so strong. When I compare Smelter to S. Hill who did get drafted fairly high, I would take Smelter all day long. He doesn't have any of the concentration or consistency issues and he doesn't drop the ball.
