DABO on Revenue Sharing and NIL--Clemson Short on NIL?

In the ON3 article below Swinney indicates Clemson is having difficulty keeping up on NIL money and hoping for approval of the Revenue Sharing plan in order to help level the playing field. I guess we are not alone in being concerned about the ability to keep up in NIL against some of the so-called "Big Boys". I was just surprised to see his comments on NIL since Clemson wants to join the B1G or SEC where the NIL competition will likely be greater than in the ACC.

NIL as a concept to allow individual players to profit from their own personal brands is a good idea. NIL the way it’s being used as a payroll system for the entire roster is dumb and not sustainable. The big money folks at large programs are soon going to realize that the 3rd string, 4-star DE who will transfer 3 times during his career is simply not worth the $250k they’re paying him. Especially when they’re having to fork over cash to pay for a fired coach’s $100M buyout.

We can only hope. So it seems NIL is the disruptive innovation no one deeply considered prior to its arrival. If that’s the case, then it should be corrected soon. If not, it will kill CFB as we know it and move it to a completely new cost/benefit curve. That move will be chaotic, finally settling on the new curve all can understand. We may already have entered that process.

This seems a good spot to put this.
Not the first or last time we are going to see this

UNLV's (3-0) starting QB has announced he is going to redshirt and enter the portal due to not receiving certain 'commitments' he was promised

I don't think NIL (which is really pay to play rather than true NIL) is just going to further separate the top 10-12 programs from everyone else. There are only a handful of schools that can raise the funds consistently to make the payments kids are now expecting. For all the b*tching over media money, that is not really what is the primary driver of revenue for the big programs. It is all the revenue they raise from alumni/fans. You have a handful of programs that can raise 50, 75M more in revenue than everyone else from their fanbase. That is why switching conferences does not improve the product on the field - look at the results of programs that have moved up, almost universally they lose more in their new conference than their old one. For many schools that move conferences they have more revenue compared to their previous conference, but their revenue relative to their conference peers is actually a larger deficit.

I work with a gentleman who is the son of a major Clemson donor. He told me several years ago that it was untenable for Clemson to keep spending the way they have been spending. They went all in to build the program into a NC contender knowing that they would likely be unable to sustain it long term. As with most fanbases, there is a major disconnect between the regular fans and the donors, but not in the way it manifests at most schools. The donors at Clemson are (mostly) content to let the AD and Dabo run things and just help provide revenue. Their belief is that with the finite amount of cash infusions they can realistically make, a coach that can recruit and develop like Dabo has done so far is their best bet. The people in the seats want them to spend like Bama and buy talent from the portal. This is a major reason why Dabo's NIL stance, though unpopular in the media and with the general fanbase, hasn't turned any heat on him from the donors.

They earn way more money in those conferences making nil a non issue.

Its about keeping up with the teams in the big boy conferences

The reality is the acc is a second tier conference

Gt. Nc st. Wake. Unc. Va tech. Uva. Smu. Cal. Stanford. Syracuse. Bc. Louisville Are all equivalent to vandy. Miss st. South carolina and Kentucky; the sec has 3-4 teams like that and the majority of the acc is like that.

Its a weak conference that eventually; if not near term long term when the conf partnership agreement subsides; will get broken up and parsed of. It may be 8 years. But it will happen.

I agree College Football has gone down a slippery slope with the creation of the NIL concept.

Nobody can really predict where its going because its so far from old-school college football, but clearly something needs to be fixed. I liked what Saban said, if its going to be similar to the NFL, run it like the NFL, salary caps on per team NIL money and a Commissioner to govern it.

Maybe in combination with an NIL salary cap, allow a player to go outside of the team money and contract additional $$ as the opportunity presents itself for him in the marketplace.

Not saying I agree with it as it stands, but the weird interesting about it to me is, it seems to somewhat have leveled the playing field, you want to turn your program around, come up with the cash ... UNLV was long-term bad until they picked up Sluka, and look at what Kyle MCCord has done for Syracuse.

Interesting. wonder who the AD was doing all that sending and building.

They hired DRad specifically to spend. What he was telling me was that the donors were willing to go all in for a while to build a National Championship team. They opened up their wallets and poured money into the program to build possibly the best pre-NIL set of facilities and enhancements to get the recruits needed to compete at the elite levels of CFB. They were successful. The issue now is that the paradigm changed and they recognize they are unable to continue to simply spend their way into the elite tier of teams competing for national championships.

The ACC was always a basketball centered conference. That's why we merged with so many big east teams. GT will end up in the big 10 for non athletics reasons as long as we are 6-8 win team in football and a decent basketball team come time for reinvite. I fully expect they will end up taking 4 Us UVA Miami and likely BC if they can get AAU. They don't need more powerhouses they need recruiting hotbeds markets and research. OF course if ND was willing to join. They mgiht just take 2 real quick which woudl in all likely hood be Us and ND

This is going to continue to happen, and it’s only going to get more frequent and more outlandish. The best players on teams eliminated from playoff contention will start sitting out regular season games in preparation to transfer or the draft. It’s going to become impossible for lower tier teams to hold on to the best players. The top talent will be filtered to the top teams, and the cycle will never end. Won’t surprise me at all if players on playoff teams who are heavy underdogs start sitting out of playoff games. G5 teams finally have a real shot at a championship, but not really because the system is skewed against them.

The system is set up to fail, because they’re trying to have a professional league with literally none of the rules and regulations that make professional leagues possible. Without player contracts, tampering restrictions, collective bargaining, revenue sharing, enforcement of pre-existing rules, and countless other regulations and oversight of professsional sports, the “league” doesn’t have a chance.

I’m all for the players getting paid what they’re worth. So pay them shares of the broadcast media and other team revenues. Make them sign a contract to play. If you’re a professional athlete who is payed to play, you better ****ing play on gameday assuming you’re healthy and available. The Chicago White Sox are probably going to set the record for worst MLB team ever. They still have fans watching on TV and in the stadium. Players sitting out of games because the season has been terrible would NEVER fly at the professional level. If it a JOB, then you better show up and be ready to go to work. If it’s not a job, the STFU and enjoy your free ride to college.

Thats my soapbox on the issue.

Here is a more behind the scenes article on what occurred.

What should likely be pointed out based on this article is that fans should expect to see more and more athletes make decisions to pull the plug before they play game 4 of the season to retain their redshirt.

"We've even already seen the midseason transfer a few times early in 2024. Oklahoma State offensive lineman Jason Brooks announced that he'd enter the portal last week. Earlier this week, Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said that Jaden Mickey, who had been third in the team's cornerback rotation, would do the same."

"You, in theory, could get another shot at a payday and maximize your time in college," a Power Four general manager told Chris Hummer of 247Sports/CBS Sports. "I think players are going to start paying attention to your four games and whether to look at it through the lens of a business decision."

There are also documented cases of players exercising their leverage to request more money for play.

Before Maryland's 2022 Mayo Bowl game appearance against North Carolina State, Tagovailoa and two other players went to Locksley and said they'd need $50,000 each to play in the game,

The prevailing sentiment is that the system is at fault here, rather than the player. It's going to happen again. How long until players hold out in the middle of the season?

I don’t mind money being raised to give to the athletes but imo whatever money is raised should be shared equally with every athlete in every school from the football team to the tennis team. I don’t know how to get this done it’s just my opinion on how it should be done. I’m not a communist I just believe in being fair to all the student athletes. I wouldn’t have this opinion if it was professional. If it’s professional, I believe in supply and demand 😂

Well, what does Dabo expect? IPTAY means I Pay Ten a Year right? Hell, $10 doesn't go very far these days unless IPTAY's meaning has been changed to "Its Probation Time Again Ya'll"

There is nothing to prevent any team from recruiting anywhere. Tennessee had a full-time recruiting office in Southern California despite not being a PAC-12 member.

As to research, departments make their own decisions. Athletic conferences have very little to do with strategic partnerships for research. What’s far more important is editorial and peer review.
