Conference Realignment

In 2025 the following teams are joining the PAC 12:

Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, Utah State & San Diego State Join The Pac-12

It will be interesting to see if the 2025 version of the P12 will be regarded as a “Power” conference again for purposes of the CFP. I don’t see how adding a handful of G5 teams to a couple of lower-tier former P4 teams makes it a power conference.

No way they’ll be considered a Power conference. I’d posit the AAC is way ahead of this conference.

The “power” designation is just fans and pundits. There is no real distinction for anything and nothing aside from perception is gained by being deemed a “power” conference. That said, I’m sure the PAC will make a big push to tout their “power” designation. With future member Boise sitting at 3 seed ahead of B12 and ACC “powers” who can argue?

Correct. Adding Boise St. was a smart move.

We’re fixing to see how “power” Boise St is.

Everyone can argue against that. Other than Boise State, the rest of the future conference wouldn’t be in the top half of any of the P4 conferences.

You guys simply want a popularity contest. Winning the Conference Championship is far harder in football than basketball. In basketball it is a 3 or 4 game Conference Tournament that basically discards the 16-20 regular season games.

To win the conference in football you need to be a top 2 team in a 16-20 team Conferennce and then win the Title game.

Letting the Committee seed the teams discards the on field play for pure opinion. It’s your opinion that Az St and Boise St are lesser teams. That is an opinion. Boise St played at Oregon and lost by a FG. They earned their seeding. Ohio Stare, Penn St and Texas had their chances. Ohio State was 4th in the B1G. Texas snd Penn St lost in their Conference Title games. If Conference Championships matter then it’s absurd to simply say even if you lose the Title game, don’t worry you will be a top 4 seed and get a bye. That’s nuts!

This was year one. The overreaction is nuts.
Overreaction on this site? You’ve got to be kidding.

The term Power is not just for fans and pundits. Those 4 conferences are considered autonomy conferences, which puts them outside some of the NCAA standard rules.

“The NCAA Division I board of directors on Thursday voted 16-2 to allow the schools in the top five conferences to write many of their own rules. The autonomy measures -- which the power conferences had all but demanded -- will permit those leagues to decide on things such as cost-of-attendance stipends and insurance benefits for players, staff sizes, recruiting rules and mandatory hours spent on individual sports.”

Interesting…
It doesn’t sound like a designation as much as a term used for the conferences that advocated for such a measure…. Which already occurred. And presumably since there were 5, the PAC was included in that group. My guess is that they would not change conditions for the PAC as long as it exists in some form.
Interesting that the term came from NCAA though…
Of course, since this is in official position of the NCAA, that means it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on. :D

I do not remember what article I read it in, but when the PAC was adding teams a few weeks ago, one article mentioned how the PAC12 had lost their “autonomous” status and had until 2025 or 2026 (I don’t remember which) to add enough teams to make a bid to reclaim it.

PAC-12 loses autonomy status

According to this article, the PAC-12 lost its autonomy status. After a little digging, I learned that autonomy status is an official NCAA term that dates to 2014. They get to make some of their own rules around things like 4-year scholarships, etc.
