I really think this is the main problem. I go to most Tech games and I'm a season ticket holder, but there have been times in recent years that I've declined attendance because I can see the game on tv. I also almost never follow the team on the road; too much trouble and I can watch the games. It used to be that this wasn't so; if you wanted to see Tech play, you had to, you know, actually go to the games.

Well, I'm getting older (believe it) and having access to the games on tv is handier then it used to be. Oth, I can see why this is clobbering attendance all over. Tv receipts won't cover the difference for many programs either.

The very long and very often TV timeouts are ruining the game. I gave up on the Falcon season tickets because of the very long and very often TV timeouts and the objectionable sideline entertainment. There is too much player's standing around too often which interferes with the flow of the game. As you said it goes back to TV.

a lot of the TV rating change for college was reshuffling of the network deals though. Fox had a big boom and ESPN/ABC had a drop because of the Big 10 games moving. Overall viewership was pretty similar. It's the NFL that's seeing a bigger drop on tv.

This is somewhat true. The drop on ABC alone though was bigger than the gains made by Fox and its networks. On top of that ESPN dropped 6%, NBC dropped 3%, and CBS dropped 10%. The network reshuffle didn't affect CBS at all yet they dropped half a million viewers per week on average.

When I was a freshman in 1964 Grant field had a horseshoe in the south end and I believe it held about 60k. Student body was about 6500 and we had to fight it out for student tickets. Most of us got date tickets since there were only about 70 coeds on campus. The stadium was usually full back then. I have a wooden seat from the horseshoe mounted in my family room that I got when they renovated. The game was the highlight of the week. I do think adding seat backs should be added.

How come nobody has brought up game length in this thread? There seems to be a drop in both NFL and NCAAFB viewership/sport interest.

I am very spoiled by the sports I watch lasting the length of a standard movie. I mainly watch highlights in addition to the full Georgia Tech game, not 2+ full games like I used to. If they brought game length down to 2-2.5 hours, football would see a huge resurgence. This is a pretty common complaint I see around my demographic.

I didn't even bother watching the Alabama/Clemson game this playoff because I was so wiped after OU/UGA.

In the World Series the Cubs made 7 pitching changes in one half inning and the half inning took an hour. That would've driven you to drink I'm guessing.

Yes. I can’t watch baseball on TV. A normal game is too slow for my taste. I can’t imagine 7 pitching changes.

They have been winning 5 or 6 games a year going back to when they were first in the ACC. Yet, like clockwork that Williams Brice Stadium is sold out and an absolute madhouse worked into a frenzy on Saturday night.

I agree...its maddening sitting in the stadium waiting on a TV timeout. I don't know about everyone else but this is my biggest gripe about going to a game in person.

TV ratings are down as well, so I'm not sure TV can be blamed completely. Personally, I think interest in the sport in general is starting to wane a little.

A lot of millenials could care less about football, or any sport for that matter.

As a Columbia resident for the past 33 years I agree. What I found interesting about them when I first moved here was their level of optimism. Seems that most Gamecock fans believe the team is going to win the division or at least come in second every year. I told by brother-in-law (USC graduate) that the only way they would ever compete is if they brought in a coach who's reputation alone could improve recruiting. Holtz and Spurrier somewhat proved me right on that point but they still have a hard time competing with all the to notch schools around them.
